How to change the bearings on a Onewheel with Sean Nelson

In this video we learn from Sean Nelson on how to change the bearings on your Onewheel.
Why would you want to replace the bearings on your Onewheel? Replacing the bearings is arguably the most important item to give your Onewheel motor the longeviity so you can go endless miles. If you are over 1000 miles and are starting to hear "clunks" when you transfer from your toe side to your heel side, you likely need your bearings changed. If you are hearing constant clunks or clicks, you should stop riding your board immediately and get your bearings replaced. Contrary to what some might say, the sound IS NOT cosmetic and the more you ride with the clunks, the more you're damaging your motor.
After this bearings replacement, my Onewheel was riding smoother than ever. I felt like it was even smoother than my other brand new XR. It really does make a difference.
The best bearings your money can buy are SKF 61907-2RS. Please be aware of counterfeit bearings on the market.
Disclaimer: Any time you take apart your mod, you risk voiding your warranty and damaging your board. Changing your bearings is inherently risky. This video is a courtesy instructional video and we cannot be held responsible if you damage your board, void your warranty, or injur yourself during the process. Mod at your own risk.

Thanks again for the vid! It gave me the confidence to change my bearings myself. I went the 2x4 and hammer plus being patient and careful and it was easy! I used a socket etc to get the old ones out and to fine tune the final seating I used ball joint press end tools plus dowel/hammer. Smooth and easy thanks to you! Btw I measured the torque breaking loose the small hub screws and I averaged about 30 inch lbs. I know loosening is going to be higher than tightening but 30 inch lbs is not much pressure so I felt comfortable torquing them to 30 inch lbs going back in. Again can’t thank you enough for taking the time to do this for us! Smooth sailing again. Went with the Burris ceramic @ $32 each I figured it was worth a try. The SKF ones were $100 ea at my local distributors! If the Burris ones doesn’t live up to the job I will absolutely spend the dough on SKF on the next change but so far these are silky smooth!!!

I scored the O-Rings from my local seal shop where they are a stock item off the shelf for $1. They are a 33mm x 1mm standard rubber O-Ring to order. You can usually reuse the large O-Ring around the cap but they are also an off the shelf item called a BS 046 or 107.67mm x 1.75mm standard rubber O-Ring.

Just did mine. W O W. It's a new board again. So crazy smooth. I used a combo of wood and a drill press (used as a bearing press) to seat all the bearings. Took a bit longer than having the proper tools but worked fine. Mine was at 1200, no drops no bonks, but I didn't keep it clean. So the bearings wore faster. Side note, I had 2 different colored bearings stock. Different brands. Weird.

I ordered a OneWheel about a week ago, it arrives on Monday. That people are talking about thousands of miles is amazing. I can see the complaint about the sloppy o-ring installation, but that is a really tight looking motor. Gives me a strong sense as to why they have their reputation for ruggedness... and that a bearing upgrade might be a good project to get behind.

I am a bearing engineer and the note that is made at 12:30 is extremely important. It is not advised to install a bearing with a rubber mallet but if you do, make sure that the intermediate piece you are striking is in contact only with the outer race and not the inner race. If you strike the bearing through the inner race that impact load will travel through the inner race, through the balls and then into the outer race and can leave indentations in your bearing which would make it noisy and cause it to fail early.

Hey guys it’s easy, don’t stress. Patience, sockets to knock the old ones out which comes out super easy at least for me it did. A few Wacks with my 2 lb hammer and right out... Small piece of 2x4 and again careful to keep it even and start with light taps and when you’re 100% sure it’s even and enough to hold in place. You can start to hit with more pressure. A cylinder shaped big socket etc or whatever you can find, I have ball joint tools so luckily I found a piece that matched the outer part of bearing perfectly to finish searing it. But seriously very easy and you’ll get to know the motor etc and will be very happy you did it. I bought some electric motor oil 3 in 1 brand as well, after wiping down my motor and the surroundings squeaky clean, . I wiped a light coat of that oil as well, everything silky smoooooooth!!

Are these the same bearings (replacements) as the ceramic hybrids craft and ride sells?
@eevees

Jeffrey Jenkins No, these are not ceramic bearings. These are much more expensive but worth it. Ceramic isn’t the most ideal bearing type for the Onewheel

Tell Sean there is a side business for individuals to ship him their boards and get their bearings changed. Price is not really a factor, it is the quality work that he does. Please ask Sean if he is interested. Thanks.

PS - Is Future Motion shitty about spares? The o-ring thing is ridiculous, they won’t sell spares so people can rebuild their hub?

@eevees 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they don't want people repairing or modifying their boards so they will not sell spares.

@JamesReedy 4 жыл бұрын
Shredd Labs that’s a bummer, I guess they want the repair revenue. I gotta think the o-ring could be figured out. Apparently they won’t even sell you screws?! I noticed one of the tire change videos admonishing to not lose any screws because they’re, “very hard to find” one would hope 15 mins on Grainger or McMaster would do it.

@@eevees Thank you for replying. We just got a One Wheel XR, and on three instances have had a very low speed cutout that looks just like yours, and we have a third party rear concave pad. Never at any type of speed, I think once you are moving forward it will not shut off for thinking a foot has come off. Did you fix it? We are going to tear the whole thing down soon to be sure everything is connected right

@@xzendersjet7595 It’s just a beginner mistake most likely. If you don’t have your front foot completely flat and the weight distributed on both sides, it will disengage on you. I teach a lot of new riders and it’s a common issue. I recommend wearing flat soled shoes like Vans if you don’t already. It helps a bit.
