One of the most common questions I get is something along the lines of... "Whats the best longboard for beginners?" This video will help beginners learn more about longboards.

After doing a bit of Googling, I realized most websites out there are writing a bunch of fluff where their sole purpose is to drive you to Amazon so they get a commission. You can tell they don’t even care if it’s the right board for you.
Don't get me wrong, there were some websites I came across with helpful info, but they were straight-up overwhelming. So I thought to myself... if I was just getting into longboarding, what would be the most important factors to help me pick the best longboard.

I didn’t wanna make a blanket statement, so if you need help, drop a comment with your specifications and I’ll do my best to recommend options for ya. Thanks for watching and all the support! My recommendation for anyone starting out is to cycle through a bunch of different used boards. Every time I changed boards, I broke through a skill plateau. No joke, riding a Penny Nickel Board after my first board was crushed by a bus was the biggest skill booster. At first I hated it because it was such a contrast to my stupid long pintail cruiser, but that contrast challenged me to get good. Then I converted a skate deck someone left in the lobby and learned a completely different skillset. Currently rocking a 38" 2012 Tomahawk which I absolutely love, but I'm thinking of getting something a little more nimble with a kicktail for slapping sidewalks. And the cool part is, I wouldn't know that if I hadn't tried a as many boards as I have. Also thinking of grabbing a dancing deck just because I know it's another way moving the progression bar a couple more notches.

I absolutely agree! I bought a ZFlex Pintail for my first time, and was having difficulties with that off the bat. Then I bought the Landyachtz Drop Cat, a Sector 9 Drop through, and now riding that top mount zFlex is no problem at all. (I love it now that I've got down carving) Also bought my first "short" board not too long ago (Landyachtz Dugout), so I can tackle shorter styles, but trying different boards has definitely built my skill up 100%.

I'm a fan of cheap, used, and even low quality stuff for starting out in most things. It's a learning experience. If you're not too invested or attached to your board because it's an old beater or cheap deck, it's easier to find the things you don't like about it, or you think you don't. You won't feel as compelled to like it just because you spent $500 on top tier stuff that doesn't fit your size, weight, or riding style but the hype told you is the 'best'. Once you get to know what you like and don't like by feel and function then you'll be able to choose the board that's right for you. A LOT of it is individual though, and that's why there's so many options. There is no 'best' overall board that you can buy without experience. The 'best' board is the one that you feel is an extension of you, with nothing extra and nothing missing, regardless of brand or discipline. Try to ride or at least stand on as many boards as possible, ask your friends who skate if you can feel their board out. Stand on it and notice how your feet fit, how the concave feels, and how much of what kind of concave it has. If you can (and if you have basic skills like pushing and turning), roll around a bit and notice how tight or wide it turns or carves. Try to notice what different heights of boards feel like, and trucks as well. Different brands of trucks perform differently, none are any better than the other generally, but if you like to carve then some trucks will dive into the carve and give you a surfy, flowy feel at low speeds. On the other hand some riders (like myself) HATE feeling any dive or dip in the turn, and will look for trucks and bushings that eliminate it. Be aware of it. Does the board feel like it gets higher or lower in a carve? Do you like it? And that's the big question to ask when you try ANY board, do YOU like it? Does it fit? Is the concave comfortable? Does it have a nose or tail and do you use them? Does dive feel good or bad? Ride as much different stuff as you can and remember what feels good. Remember WHY it felt good, what you like about the size, shape, concave, flex, stiffness, and all the other details and look for boards with those features for any serious purchase. If you're so new to skating that you can't so much as push, then get any borrowed or secondhand board that will fit under your feet and learn to just get comfortable standing on it. Stand on it indoors on a rug and just pretend you're rolling while you watch youtube videos. Just get used to feeling the board under you, the trucks leaning, and eventually your body will figure out what to do. Binge watch something while standing on your board and you'll soon find a comfortable stance that feels natural.

@rustymustard7798
@rustymustard7798 3 жыл бұрын
@@Daniel-tx2vt Pretty much, just extend that to everything. Personally i like the cheap, basic, or manually operated stuff when starting out in almost anything because it forces you to learn to overcome challenges early and adapt before you develop muscle memory. You encounter problems and break stuff, and when you do, you learn a lot more about the subject by having to apply theory to solve a problem, increasing your own knowledge and experience in the subject. The biggest benefit though is by doing this i learn to deal with limitations and problems, and find out WHY better or more specialized equipment is worth it, or right for me.

My first proper board was a mini cruiser, I used it to get around my college campus. Now I use a full size longboard with a platypus shape (with a fairly broad nose and tail) to get around my hometown. Our streets and pathways suck here though (small semi-rural town in Ireland) so I've been considering getting some chunkier wheels. Finally I've picked up a super cheap standard skateboard from Amazon recently to try learn how to ollie, just for fun.

@@danielfriedman3814 no. Landyachtz boards for the most part are made in China and are cheap easy to reproduce boards. They have some higher end stuff made by locals in Vancouver but the majority of Landyachtz stuff is cheaply made. You will find with most brands they will have a lineup of cheaper boards that are just meant to put boards out the door and make money. Hence the dinghy. They use those boards to make large profit and then will make higher quality more limited boards.

Great video! One thing I’ve learned over the years of introducing friends to longboarding is never assume they know anything. I have had friends that buy a surfy type longboard and want to bomb some hills. So I usually recommend for beginners a solid drop-through longboard. Most people don’t know what I mean, but they’re looking for stability to go down some medium sized hills. Anyway, love watching your channel!

When I started early this past summer, I knew I would eventually want to upgrade but wanted something simple to cruise around on. I went with a Retrospec 41" Pintail which I got for only $60, so I was not expecting much, but I'm thrilled with it so far - to anyone looking for something similar to me (an absolute beginner looking for casual fun) I absolutely would say the great reviews for Retrospec are accurate. However, I know now that I am confident on a board and will want to continue this hobby for a long time, so I am planning on upgrading as predicted. Thanks to your channel, I've started saving for a Dinghy board to downsize, yet upgrade - so that I can commute around my college campus and learn some tricks.

I decided to teach myself how to longboard being stuck at home starting in March, and my Ehler has held up really well! I actually just put my second set of bearings on. And if you're into asthetic stuff, you can customize what graphic it has & all the other components on the build-a-board site. I'm kinda a tall guy in a semi rural spot, but my 41" was in the $120-$140 with some of the options I chose. For a beginner with craptastic balance who was testing the waters, I would highly recommend them for a first board. 👍

My first board was from Osprey Action Sports and I got a 40" pintail complete longboard, with slide gloves and a helmet for £56. I used it to learn dancing/freestyle and learned how to pop shuv, ollie and nollie bigspin on it. The deck lasted me almost a year, the wheels lasted a bit longer and I'm still riding with some of the same bearings from that board 2.25 years on. If you're in the UK, you should definitely check them out.

My first board was a 40 inch mercer. It was about $180 and platypus shaped. My reason for getting that shape was because im not really interested in tricks but i want to dance on or around my board. I also got it that shape for cruising and to avoid wheel bite. I just got into longboarding and i actually just got my first board a few months ago like in july. I mainly just want to cruise though. I have 2 boards now but i want all different types and start a collection 😁

I bought a skateboard first and have decided I enjoyed the cruising aspect of it most, but it wasn't comfortable. So I bought myself my first longboard. A Retrospec board. Don't remember the name but it's huge (40+in) and was about $60. I swapped the bearings for Fireball Bearings (my friend uses them in his longboard and feel amazing) and that's been my set up. I like how wide the board is and how much concave there is. The length is a bit difficult at times to manage since I'm not very tall. The wheels are harder rubber so I'm thinking about replacing them with shark wheels. Today I just bought my friend's Sector 9 longboard. Unlike the RetroSpec, it isnt a drop-down so it feels like I'm flying. A bit....weird to get used to. But I like it. It's smaller than the other one and the wheels are softer. I'm tempted to put some better (faster/smoother) bearings in it but I'm not sure what to go with if I do

Great channel. I'd like to bring up: pumping, pushpump. I began in the end of my 40ies, so these very low decks & setup that tends to go pretty straight helped to avoid nasty falls. I’m not a freestyle rider, more of a cruiser myself. I actually tested out a drop through board and found out that the lower center of gravity that’s have with the drop through was way more comfortable. I’m not a scientist but considering I’m a bigger guy I feel like I had more control due being a little closer to the ground unlike how I am when I’m on a cruiser. Plus almost no wheel bite on the drop through so that’s pretty rad. I just wanted to share my opinion because maybe I could help some people out along with this really good video guide.

The Sector 9 Lookouts are also very good beginner boards, I went from a penny to the Bico Lookout (beautiful board, $200) and I'm honestly very pleased with it. Fast, very easy to balance on, and great quality bamboo. Flexes pretty well without feeling like it will snap. The only thing I have a problem with it is the bearings, but Zumies carries REDS bearings for pretty cheap, which makes the board feel like butter. I use my board mostly to get from point A to point B, as well as just free cruising for enjoyment. One of the best investments I've ever made.

Suggestion For New Longboarders: If you have a low budget, upgrade your board with Zealous bearings. They’re great bearings that are under $20. Just remember not to clean or relube them though, since they use a special nano-ceramic lube. This shouldn’t matter though since they'll last a few years without any cleaning.

I really like my Globe Prowler, I had that thing for many years now and it never let me down. I still ride the standard wheels and bearings that came with it and both work flawless, the deck also held up really well and is made up of bamboo on mine. I also drove it in the rain many times and the board did great in this weather, although you shouldn't drive in the rain too often, mostly because of the bearings. The only thing is that the shape of the board may feel a little weird for some of you, I always call it a fish shape, but I don't think it's really called like that. Have fun with longboarding my friends 🤙🏼

Some extra comments from someone who's been longboarding for a while: For dancing, I'd say get a topmount dancer so you have big kicks. Landyachtz, bastl and timber are good makes. For cruising, if you seriously want something to commute on or go a long distance, get a dropthrough, dropdown or doubledrop. They get your foot as close to the ground as possible and it makes it easier to push. I commute in a city and use a landyachtz switch with big soft wheels. I spend less effort and go much quicker than people on cruisers. The lack of a tail and big turning circle hasn't really been that much of an issue, YMMV. For downhill/freeride, everyone has to start somewhere. Remember to get slide gloves and protection. Landyachtz, rocket and rayne are good makes. Learn to slide on a small hill, preferably with someone to teach you. If you are unsure you can get a dancer as you can try light downhill/freeride on them. If you like downhill then get a proper downhill/freeride deck.

I realise you can tighten it and it isn't really supposed to turn like this...but after tightening I still end up getting the board to touch the wheels. Figured the platypus shape would be the best for getting around campus and taking a tight turn if I need to. Is this the best type for longer rides and tighter turns?

@rustymustard7798
@rustymustard7798 3 жыл бұрын
@@rajs4012 Personally i don't really have any experience with the brand, but it depends on how serious you are. I'm sure by the reviews that it's decent enough to learn and cruise around on. If you've never skated before it could be worth it, but you've also got to realize that at that price the trucks and wheels will probably be pretty low grade compared to quality cast trucks. If you've never rolled on a board and can accept that you'll need to upgrade as you learn then it seems like a good deal, but if you've skated in the past and have some experience, you might be better off just going with a higher quality complete. Just make sure before you skate it to look at it carefully, inspect the trucks and make sure they're straight, both in the mounting and in the bushings. Check that the pivot cups are flush and the same depth, it's not that uncommon for the baseplates to be machined incorrectly. Make sure the bearings spin without feeling wobbly or chunky. They don't need to spin freely, they're packed with grease so they feel 'stiff' at first, as long as they feel smooth and straight. If everything works then just learn on it, figure out what you like and don't like, and maybe break stuff, replacing it with better quality stuff you KNOW you want as you learn what fits your style. And remember, bushings can be cheaply bought in stiffer and softer durometers, throwing a different set on can change the feel entirely if it feels either too stiff or mushy for your weight and style.
