Wondering what a surfskate is? In this video, I break down what they are and why they're my favorite type of board to ride. Carver, YOW, Smoothstar, and Waterborne are a few brands I briefly mentioned.

Carver surfskate review: • Carver Skateboards Rev...
Longboard vs Skateboard: • Longboard vs Skateboar...
About a year ago, I started seeing boards resembling cruisers on my Instagram feed.
And I couldn’t figure out why they were becoming so popular, I mean, sure, they looked cool, but I didn’t pay much attention to them.
That’s until I saw videos of the people doing some insane carving. This was when I realized there was a completely different type of board called the surfskate.
Since I’ve been skating and surfing for over 14ish years now, I was intrigued. Longboards were originally created for surfers to replicate surfing on land, but surfskates, I’m telling you, are another level.

@@madformtb2312 Yeah I gotcha. Yow is solid, it's just a different feeling... more 'divey' and a little less predictable. But I love their board designs. Love the shoutout to the subreddit!! What you really need to try is a Slide truck, or one of the many clones (I have a Flow, which is a new subbrand of Origin so the quality is pretty great). They don't lean near as much as others which is great for skate parks or just general cruising if you're a longboarder. I imagine with any other truck going back to regular trucks would be awful. I had to sell my Vanguard because I kept falling off of it since it's so radically different from my surfskate 🤣

I'm on the verge of buying a SwellTech Premiere ( or maybe the Hybrid Camo? because its slightly cheaper with a wider tail area and decent wheelbase) anyway, I'm over my Carver -even put the CX truck on an old reverse kingpin Chilli deck and drilled new holes making it super loose. I previously owned a Carver C7 and found the CX to be tighter turning. But Carver as a surfskate has its surftraining limitations and after 5 years of being on them, I am ready to progress on to something even "surfier". WHAT I really want is to get my hands or feet on a Toledo #77 by Smoothstar but I live in Orange County CA and with the Carver patent monopolizing the So Cal surf skate market it is impossible to get a Smoothstar. So glad that you shed new light on the distribution center opening in 2021! In the meantime, I am on the fence about getting a Swell tech, on the positive side they 're the LOOSEST surfskate out there and are said to 99.9% resemble short board surfing, however the thing is fragile as the the springs break often even with their newer truck version II. Also, having broken both wrists (my rt one with the Carve Board -the giant board with inflatable tires that I thought would never slide out!) the Swell Techs seem really sketch as nosediving looks all too easy to do on them. I look forward to your review of Swell Tech's as a surftrainer (bottom turns top turns cutbacks) and also your opinion on how sketchy it is. It looks like you got the J.O.B. Banzai model?

This vid got my sub. Looking forward to seeing your reviews to hear you take on comparing them. While smooth star was enticing, I was between waterborne and carver because smoothstar are already expensive and tack on almost $100 shipping. Yikes. I picked waterborne to try on my deck to see if it was worth the hype. A couple months later, I built a new board based on their adapter since it was so much fun. That said, it makes me wonder what I am missing in the other surfskates, which wraps me back to waiting for your comparison!

I've been curious about these. I live in Louisiana now. I used to surf when I lived in Puerto Rico. It's been 15 years since then. Surfing was my first time on a board. I wonder if you have tried "Original Skateboards" and their unique approach to inverted kingping longboards? They use a spring base instead of poly bushings and their turn rate is nuts, but yes... it's both trucks doing the trick.

mmm yes, it's a lot more wobble than most boards if you're picking up serious speed. but it's perfectly fine at most cruising speeds and it's quite enjoyable being able to carve so hard.

should i buy it as my first skateboard? I like it a LOT and i think i would have so much fun using it but maybe i should first learn how to skate properly on a board with a regular deck and then go for a surfskate? this make any sense??

Landyachtz recently came out with their own version of a surfskate and I picked one up recently as they were the most accessible to me in Canada. They dont use springs but a reverse king pin truck and I've managed to learn to pump pretty well on them but lacking in some speed. I'm thinking its due to the lack of springs not providing me any return of energy? Might be worth checking out!
@concrete-waves
@concrete-waves 3 жыл бұрын
Someone actually just mentioned to me about that Landyachtz surfskate. I haven’t tried it but, yup I’d say you’re right... chances are you’re not getting that return of energy because there aren’t any springs. The springs are pretty vital in a surfskate because it pulls the truck from one side to another, without losing speed

i have a sector 9 pintail longboard, it’s super fun! but i want my carving to be sharper, do you think the surf skate adapter would work good on my board? or should i look into getting getting a smaller cruiser?
@concrete-waves
@concrete-waves 3 жыл бұрын
Surfskating works best when you have a board in the 28-34"ish range. The shorter the wheelbase, the snappier the turns. So I'd prob save up, get a used cruiser and Waterborne adapter. Or look into a YOW or Smoothstar, although that'll be more expensive

Hey man, really great videos, just found the channel today! I have a question: What do you think of the day to day practicality of these boards? I'm assuming that at higher speeds the extra sensitivity from the front truck makes them not too viable as a way of getting around town right?
@concrete-waves
@concrete-waves 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jack! As far as day to day practicality, I wouldn't suggest them. The carving is so aggressive that it's not a great way to get around. The only brand I'd suggest as a viable way to get around town would be Carver. Their truck systems are much more mellow
@safetybeachlife
@safetybeachlife 3 жыл бұрын
You’re right. Any downhill speed and you’ll get the death wobbles real quick. Caught me by surprise I’ll tell you. 😬 But. . . For just working on my surf style on flat to semi small hills they’re just great
@JakyCollier
@JakyCollier 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there Jack, I have custom made deck with Slide surfskste trucks and I barely walk :D I always ride. Even uphill if u want some workout ;) gping down the hills is hell of a fun for me recetly, u have to make a lot of turns so u wont get too fast. Or to prevent speedwobble just distrubute your weight right. But u cant bomb very steep hills with too narrow roads.

@concrete-waves

It depends what surfskate you get. YOW, Smoothstar & Waterborne are more aggressive for carving, whereas Carver has more mellow trucks. I wouldn't recommend going over speed bumps with these
