Every so often there comes a movie that has a massive effect on the film industry. It doesn't need to create a new medium or be the best movie ever, but it can do things differently enough that it triggers a wave of influence. That's exactly what Shrek did. It ushered in a new wave of animated films and its influence can still be felt to this day. Whether the influence was bad or good, that's for you to decide, but there is no arguing that it's there.
In this video we'll explore what made Shrek so special and how it changed the film industry forever.

@@FilmStackRight! (And of course, the now-hated left-winger AniMat would make a video defending Rotten Tomatoes in the last decade. Heck, he would even treat DreamWorks’ 2D films like people are blinded by nostalgia to wish it got the Seal of Approval… which they did… at least back in the late 2010s… he’d also defend the critics including Beyond the Trailer on his Mario movie like “Sure, the animation is beautiful, but there are much worse movies like the Frozen duology, Wish, Strange World, Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Toy Story 4 and Lightyear and just anything Disney these days I gave higher ratings because the story isn’t as compelling for my own critical satisfactory needs”… no offence to those that actually like AniMat. A part of me has a soft side for him because of Animation Lookback, which is why he can’t blame sponsors for him taking one then two then three months to make just one part considering what he could do since the course of the 2010s)

also, another point about shrek was how the actors chosen to be the VAs, unlike disney who most likely aproached "family friend" actors, like Tom Hanks and Robbin Willians at the time, opted for more "niched' celebrities, like Mike Myers, an actor mostly know for his parodies, and Cameron Diaz, a sex symbol by the time the movie was made.

Shrek is a good movie, but it bothered me that this turned away studios from wanting to make cel based animated films anymore. And also the failure of Titan A.E. in the box office. But then, I'm old, so I'm not good at adapting to change. 🤷‍♂️

I genuinely wonder what would happen if "Monsters, Inc." took home the Academy Award instead of "Shrek". Now that Pixar made a more financially-successful and award-winning film, would people look at "Shrek" with a different perspective? Great video!

Hmmm 🤔 I wonder as well. I don't think not winning would have taken away from the movie being great but it might have solidified Disney and Pixar as powerhouses that can't be competed with. And thank you!

Never thought of Shark Tale as trying to copy the formula of Shrek because the premise was so different, but more of an animated retelling of a mafia movie... That being said, I'd love to hear your thoughts (if you have any) about Shrek 2, because I feel like that's the only sequel I've ever thought was way better than the original. Nothing compares to that film imo

Shark Tale follows several elements of the Shrek Formula. That being CG animation, heavily marketing the film based on the actors alone, pop music, raunchy humor, and pop culture references. In fact, the first few minutes of Shark Tale is jampacked with pop culture references.

Adding on to the ending of the video, the thing about this recent new era of animation (mostly its reception by people) that kind of rubs me the wrong way is the way every movie that grants a new take on animated hybridism is almost immediately associated with Spider-Verse: Yes, the film is a very important foundation to the way studios have been more open to give more freedom to the art form and how the artists can influence the story in more ways than before, but it's kind of a bummer to see people generally defining it as "Spiderverse style" or something, even when the only thing those works share in common is the experimentation of form. "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" doesn't really share any visual particular simmilarities with the Spider-Verse films besides the 2D-3D hybrid approach (which was in constant exploration even before Spider-Verse, like with Blue Sky's "The Peanuts Movie"), it goes for this beautiful digital painting style while the first Spider-Verse was more about capturing the frantic feeling of comic books, yet the comparisons were constant. The influence that Spider-Verse has had in the past few years is very clear and extremely welcome, but it's not about a specific style, it's about the freedom of choice for artists that want to find the best, most fitting possible visual experimentation to their work. We really shouldn't be giving studios and executives the notion that we want them to dwell into same-y spaces of visual storytelling, but rather the flavor of experimentation and variety; it's great to have many different studios trying their own thing, be it 3D, 2D, stop-motion and whatever else lies behind the somewhat repressed creativity folks in the animation industry are just waiting for their opportunity to share.

Thank you for the comment! I agree! We want more experimentation without blindly labeling things as clones. Spider verse showed us that experimentation is welcome and can be received well, but not every movie that experiments is a Spiderverse clone.

In the scoring community Hans Zimmer has often been a divisive figure. His company employs dozens of composers and it isn't always clear who is doing what, but since it's all under the HZ brand, his name is all we ever see.

For me I think John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams deserve the main credit for the Antz score. I really don't like the film, but man the soundtrack in that is just amazing. They also both composed the soundtrack for Shrek. And John Powell always gives his A game even if it is a bad animated film. He has made many bad animated films a lot more tolerable even if the movie itself sucks. Also I am not too confident in the animation industry sadly. Dreamwork's still has a very rocky output of films, and once Spider-verse is done I'm not sure what will work next. Spider-verse is up there with Toy Story and Shrek on the most influential animated films and I feel like that formula will get stale like it did with the other two. I think the main issue here is Pixar. The story and themes of their older movies used to be very deep and mature for "kids films", resulting in critics and audiences loving every release. It was crazy how many hits they had. Now I think the movies are way less mature and are not very well thought through. They are average crowd pleasers that don't really go against the grain or say something new like all the original Pixar films did. And maybe even Disney will end up closing Pixar in the near distant future because of how similar their films are now to theirs.
