Shrewsbury Castle Crossbow Bolt - How To Forge Medieval Bodkins and Arrow Heads

3 жыл бұрынIn 2019, archaeologists excavating Shrewsbury Castle discovered two medieval crossbow bolt heads amongst 12th and 13th Century layers.
Working alongside Dr Morn Capper from the excavation team, and using her dimensions, details and images of the original heads I've put together this short video on how these heads would have been forged, using iron in a traditional coal forge.
The original heads were around 25g in weight, which for a 12th/13thC head is too large for an arrowhead, but fits perfectly with a crossbow bolt head.

Will brother you should show us more of your forge I'm a black Smith from ky an thanks to you I now have arrow heads in my tool box I love this craft more than life an love watching others mold an form still like clay as I do it is very stress relieving an the outcome is endless the mind is the only governor of the imagination big big thanks to what you do my friend very beautiful work

I am wondering .. it looks like you use the shoulder of the main bar to half on, half off, hammer the socket round, Your hammer work is quick but I think I'm reading it right, May I ask also what diameter the socket is on this and the bodkins That second one went surprisingly quickly, thanks for sharing

Are there any sources of needle bodkins being used with crossbows before plate armour was invented? Also, keep up the good work!
