MAKE SURE ANNOTATIONS ARE ON
Many argue that a rifle dedicated to emergencies must be a modern combat platform capable of semi-auto fire. I agree that a semi-auto would be advantageous in situations requiring covering fire for advance or retreat. A good sporter lee enfield can be obtained for $250 and is capable of fast shooting and quick reloads. Not as fast as a gas gun but still fast. If you're on a budget and want a reliable MILSPEC beater SHTF rifle then don't discount the lee enfield rifle.
Most people are not combat trained soldiers and a more simplistic, easy to maintain, cost effective and reliable platform may be more suitable.
The lee enfield provides people with a fast repeating bolt action in a commercially available caliber, it has numerous adaptations for the field, it is fun and is great for grooming new shooters and has excellent hand loading possibilities. If the SHTF phenomenon is something you are interested in then hand loading ammunition is your next step to long term economical shooting, practice, security & sustainability.
Also discussed in this video are reduced loads for small game, teaching kids how to shoot and the 'Hammond Game Getter' which is commonly known as a subcaliber adapter, subcaliber insert, cartridge adapter and gallery cartridge. The purpose of the Hammond Game Getter is to convert your big-game rifle into a low-power rifle ideal for targets, birds, and small game at close range with minimum noise.

This is my favorite video from Riflechair. Rain bouncing off the tin roof, holding a real nice Lee Enfield sporter, great Narrator, beautiful backdrop, life is good. Keep up the great videos, and I know you love Enfields as much as I do.........Ontario .

Paused at 1:24, here's how I see it. A little comment before watching there rest of the vid. The biggest issues with the Lee Enfield, no matter what model (as long as it's .303) is the availability of ammo, and the availability of replacement parts. Actually I withdraw that second one; with all the Lee Enfields floating around Canada, it wouldn't be difficult to find an old beater to take a part from, or just another Lee that you don't find is as good as yours, so you strip the part from it as necessary. Personally I have a reloading setup that's portable, and doesn't need any batteries or anything. Lee Hand Press (Slow, but does the trick), Lyman 500 scale (A bit bulky with lots of parts, but it's mostly plastic/aluminium/brass so it's lightweight), with IMR 4064 powder, Lee .303 Dies, 174gr Hornady .312 FMJ, CCI Large Rifle Primers, and about 200 or so .303 British casings, mostly Winchester Super-X. So with a bottle or two of powder, and a couple boxes of bullets, I'd be good for a nice long time as far as ammo goes. Find any old flat and dry surface, then I can set up my scale, install the deprimer/resizer die, pull out a 100-primer sleeve from my 1000-primer box, pull out a box of the bullets, and spend some time making some new ammo, complete with clips on which to put them. As far as functionality goes, the No.4 Lee Enfield is easily one of the best bolt actions you could have, in my opinion it's THE best. Smooth Lee bolt with its 60 degree bolt turn, cock-on-close action, and trigger/bolt proximity so close you can fire without even letting go of said bolt, allowing you for faster follow-up shots than any other bolt action available in my experience. The 10-rnd mag certainly doesn't hurt, which I find can be reloaded from empty within 4-5 seconds if using clips, the long radius aperture sights are absolutely gorgeous, you've got the barrel that's thicker than the Mk.III*'s not to mention it's free floating, and you have a storage commpartment in the buttstock for a brass oil can and pull-through. As for the tool necessary to disassemble the bolt, that'll have to be put in a pocket, the Lyman 500 box, or something. One of the down sides of the Lee action; very specific tool needed for a full disassembly of the bolt. (Back on the vid) The SKS-45 would definitely be a great pick as well, or the CZ858 if it's available. I've yet to get one. The SKS is quite cheap though, cheaper than the Lee Enfield unless you're going after a sporter. Oh, about energy on the .223 at a distance. If you took a 55gr M193 cartridge, shot it from a 20" M16 barrel, then by the time it reached 600m, its velocity will have dropped from about 3200 ft/s down to about 1200 ft/s. You're talking ballistically similar to .22lr at the muzzle. With 7.62x39, a 123gr M43 from the 16" barrel of an AKM will go from about 2400 ft/s down to about 950 ft/s, which is slow, but it's ballistically similar to .32 H&R Magnum. I'd prefer a 123gr .30 cal bullet at 950 ft/s rather than a 55gr .223 cal bullet at 1200 ft/s lol though of course it can't be ignored; trying to take an AKM to 600m is pissing in the wind. None the less, you get the idea; intermediate cartridge are pretty limited. Meanwhile .303 British is just a hair weaker than .308. Take the same bullet weight and same barrel length, and you're probably talking 100-150 ft/s difference in favour of the .308. Not exactly substantial. For effective fire against an AR15; every rifle has to realign its sights after firing when you get out to enough distance. At 300m+, if you're working that silky smooth Lee bolt quickly while the recoil is still pushing at you, then you're ready to put those sights back on just about as quickly as an AR15's are. Semi auto action+less recoil would mean fast sight reacquisition but what I'm saying is, since the AR would still have to reacquire the sights after every individual shot, the difference in how quickly the shots are being fired wouldn't be very big unless the AR shooter was doing double taps or something, in which case they'll simply have a guaranteed miss with every second shot, and run out of ammo twice as fast. As for a reload, like I said, 4-5 seconds for a Lee Enfield if you're quick with the clips, while it's known that the AR15 can be reloaded in about 2-3 seconds if you're fast with the mags. At 300m though, not exactly much call for speed reloads, but what can't be avoided is the 10rnd mag vs 30rnd mag. The Lee would have to reload 3x as much, and not as quickly. At 300m though, you can bet that .303 British will still be VERY accurate and powerful, while that smaller .223 bullet will lose velocity far more quickly. That can't be avoided. Bigger/heavier bullets are slower at the muzzle, but they don't slow down as quickly as smaller/lighter bullets that have such a strong start at the muzzle, as mentioned when I spoke of M193 vs M43. Now, if you were to choose an AIA Lee Enfield in .308, suddenly you have 20-rnd mags available, and Mauser style clips which I find don't require any technique at all to use, while to be quick with .303 clips I find a certain technique helps to ram those rimmed cartridges home. if you load the clips right before loading them into the mag, you won't experience much of any rim jam. Using .308 however completely removes the potential for it, which I consider a plus. Lots of ways you can go with this. I built up my collection of .303 brass by buying a few boxes every now and again when my friends and I would head out to the range. Over time, it does most certainly add up. I also bought some bandoliers, they're only fabric so not that strong, but they're actually Aussie milsurp from the 1960s. With that, I could actually carry 20 5-rnd clips (100 rounds) on me. A bit excessive perhaps, but it wouldn't be all that bulky, especially with how light the fabric is. As for 100 rounds of .303 itself, that weighs about 5.5lb I figure, call it an even 6lb with the 20 clips. Speaking of which, clips are less bulky and lighter than magazines. Carrying magazines is all fine and dandy, but if you carried clipped ammo, it wouldn't weigh you down as much, as it wouldn't take up as much space, not to mention when you USE a clip, it's just a little strip of metal you have to shove in your pocket afterwards. When you use a mag, you still have the full size mag to deal with, and you won't want to drop it. Might loose it. Best to take it, put it back on your person, then go for the fresh mag. Great thing about the CZ858 is that it accepts both detachable mags and stripper/charger clips. So you can carry a few mags for emergency, but bring some SKS ammo pouches or something to hold clips in. Saves you the bulkiness/weight of having ALL your ammo in mags, while you still have those mags if you need them. Reload with clips when you can, reload with mags when you must. If you've had to use mag after mag for whatever reason, and find yourself with some time, then put a mag in and stuff 2-3 clips into it. Put it back in your pouch, then grab an empty mag, stuff 2-3 clips in that, and repeat until you've got your mags over half full, or completely full again. If you can get one Czech pouch for 4 mags, and two Russian SKS pouches for 8 clips, or three if you have the belt space, then that gives you a total of 200-240 rounds. That's no small sum, and all of it cheap/common ammo, unless you have some soft point hunting rounds for deer. I wouldn't suggest dry firing though, my 1942 No.4 Mk.I/2 that was refurbished in 1951, its firing pin snapped off at the tip when dry firing. My extractor spring also gave out once, but wasn't hard to find a new spring and firing pin. I heard that the spare parts were starting to wear thin though, since the No.4 Mk.I* Lee Enfield hasn't been in production in Canada since the early-mid 1950s, basically the same for Britain's No.4 Mk.2. Though India was producing their Mk.III* into the 1960s, however rechambered to 7.62 Nato in the 1950s if memory serves, and as mentioned, Australia is still producing Lee Enfields through AIA, though I believe they're all in .308. None the less, spare parts. The Canadian Rangers are looking to replace their No.4 Mk.I* apparently, I'm hoping they just go with AIA's version of the No.4, chambered in 7.62 Nato. Makes providing ammo a HELL of a lot easier, not to mention there's the benefit of no possible rim jam, and more easily used clips, though I'm not one to complain about either rim jam or .303 clips :P The benefits are there though, it'd be foolish to deny them. Great vid! Pardon my huge comment, but when I get to talking about firearms, ammo, reloading, or survivalist aspects, I tend to get really into it and ramble on. To any poor soul who actually reads all this, I hope none of my facts are lacking, nor the content found overly boring. Found the .303-.32 JHP pistol load and that gadget that lets you fire lead bullets with .22lr to be quite interesting! Makes me love the .303 even more! Back home in Newfoundland, to my knowledge, everyone just calls them .303s, whether it's Mk.III*, No.4, or that handy little 7lb No.5.

I agree. Rifles and rounds like the Enfield .303 do things that the M-16/AR-15s can't such as turn cover from the 5.56 in to mere concealment. Add to that the fact that a round like a .303 does in fact put people down in a much more emphatic fashion than the .22 cal rounds do. In my opinion as long as a rifle squad has not snuck up on you and are engaging you at close range, the typical WWII battle rifle is highly effective. Cheers, Rifles up!

If you are completely kitted out for at least one rifle whether it's a K98k, M91/30, No4Mk1, M70 featherweight, 700 Remington, etc... it comes down to durability, serviceability and ammunition. If you get everything you need for one rifle - one calibre I recommend avoiding gas guns. They need too much maintenance and you are very restricted as to what ammunition you can feed through it. Gas guns are not very versatile rifles at all and most of them are in calibres unsuitable for big game...

+Rick Nethery Hi Rick - You bring up a good point. Lets say this happens here in Canada. A month goes by and people are desperate. The RCMP will still be out and they will be confiscating weapons - of that I have no doubt. While you might get away with an enfield - you can be darned certain you won't with an AR-15. The Queens cowboys will be taking all of your defensive platforms before you can say HELP

Thank you for this video! I just inherited a sporterized lee enfield built in 1942 like yours from my stepdad who passed away. He used it for deer hunting as well and this rifle is great! The only drawback is the ammunition is expensive and hard to come by but like you said if you buy it by piece meal you will eventually be able to have your own stockpile ready for whatever zombie apocalypse, breakdown of law and order or whatever emergency situation that may come in the future!

RC, I know this video is dated now but still valid. I can understand your choice in Canada. I agree that an Enfield is a good choice bolt gun. Years ago, I bought a Ishapore Enfield 2A in 7.62NATO converted into a jungle carbine when they were sold here in the states. I also equipped it with two magazines and stripper clips. I also have two .308/.32acp converters similar to yours for small game. The 7.62 also feeds two 7.62 M1s and Ruger rifle. Ammo set aside in plenty. Great topic.

Hey Riflechair, Thanks for posting your videos on the Lee Enfield. We are very limited on what we can have here in Australia, and I have been toying with what rifle to go with for some time, e.g. focus on my Ruger Gunsite Scout, or my 3 x .303’s. A MKIII (sporter), a No4 (full stock) and a Parker Hale commercial. I went out today, to a day very similar as to the one in this video and shot 90 rounds of 303 through my No4, and could only be bothered putting 14 through he Gunsite before I gave up wiht the No4 being a clear winner. Just all around. Target wise I like shooting soft drink cans at about 75M, and the No4 was very easy to do this with, sights set at 200M as you suggest. Thank you again for re-ignghting my passion for these fine rifles. Shane B
@Riflechair
@Riflechair 8 жыл бұрын
+shane Broomhall Hi Shane. The sights on the No4 are a GIFT. In the case of SHTF everyone in my family will be carrying a lee enfield - or components and ammunition that support the calibre and rifle platform. Even if there is only one rifle - everyone contributes in their kit to maintaining and keeping that one rifle running. Interesting how so many people have tried the Ruger Scout and have been left wanting at the end of it. I agree with your assessment, I was never a big fan of the M77 - I'd rather run a Mauser 98 retrofitted with scout optics and stripper clips rather than a magazine system. Too much weight.... In any case I hope you continue to enjoy enfields. Our fathers, grandfathers and sometimes great grandfathers carried them with great effect to defeat our enemies in some of the worst environmental conditions known on this planet. That has to count for something.

I live in Los Angeles county (sadly.) I won't retire here, that's for sure. Back during the Rodney King riots, I could actually smell the smoke from the fires at my house. I really wanted an M1A to protect my young family in case ugly things moved east, and my then-wife gave me permission to get one. I took my toddler son to a local gun store, and there was a nice new M1A, for the cost of a house payment. I balked... because they also had a FTR (factory thorough refurbished) Fazerkely No. 4 Mk 1 for US$140. I had read of the Lee Enfield and it's superiority as a battle rifle. My best friend has one that looks exactly like the one in your video, cut down stock and all. It is amazingly accurate. I looked funny, making my way through the parking lot holding my newly acquired Enfield with one hand and pushing a stroller with the other.I was able to find Greek surplus ammo for cheap too, 800 rounds rather hastily coined during WWII. Most of it goes bang, some of it goes click and then bang, but by golly, I was ready for the SHTF. Plus, I didn't miss a house payment. This combination is not as accurate as my buddy's but it will do the job.Decades later I have my M1A, among other toys (acquired between wives,) but I would never ever part with my Enfield. It is an amazing piece of battle technology and an amazing piece of history!Great video, I've enjoyed so many of yours that I just subscribed. Keep them coming, please!

I am with you RifleChair. It’s hard wearing, reliable, reloaded/bedded it’s accurate enough to drop a deer size target at 7-800 yards and will be accurate for food on the table beyond 2-300 while most deer would be hit at 50-150y. It’s my SHTF rifle. I never plan to be in a gunfight… if that is the case I have failed somewhere… but remember these rifles were used against US troops in Afghanistan to good effect despite the US being assault rifle equipped. The range is good.

Awesome vid, Riflechair. I have a No. 5 mk1 which was given to me back in '84. Very sweet shooting weapon. Way back then I had a suppier who could get bulk military ammo on a belt. That stuff would go through just about anything I hit up to a 1 inch steel plate. Devastating round. Also, I could get Reminton 180 grain soft nose and even had chance to pick up a few boxes of Winchester 210 grain soft nose. Those rounds hurt when I pulled the trigger. Today I am shooting Hornady 174 grain match grade rounds. More expensive, but closer to mil specs than anything else I have fired. Wish I could post you a pick of my rig. Well-done an useful video! My own "Last rifle" after the Apocalypse would probably be my Dad's ww2 bring-back 98k Mauser, first high powered rifle I fired... BUT realistically speaking, for last ditch SHTF survival rifle I probably would prefer my #4MKll. Unlike the poster in the video, I do not live in Canada and getting ammo in the States can sometimes be a problem but I reload and getting components has never really been a problem.. . Same for the mauser. Still I do like the LE for it's accuracy and ammo capacity. My #4 has the flip-up peep-type rear sight and is pretty easy to operate. Other than the ammo availability, the LE would be my choice for a bolt military-type rifle. I especially like the way the poster's Lee-Enfield is semi-sporterised... enuff wood removed to reduce the weight and the rest smoothly finished up, and it looks good. Some years back some Indian-manufactured .308/7.62X51 rifles came into the country and I was able to play around with one borrowed from a friend. Woulda coulda shoulda gotten a couple then.. but went with an Israeli 7.62X51 mauser conversion.

You're set up very well for the Lee Enfield rifle! The first rifle I ever purchased was a Lee Enfield many years ago and it is still a favorite but for those who may be just starting out it may not be as good a choice as it was even ten years ago. Prices are rising quickly on them and what was a $150 sporter a few years ago now are going for over $300 in my area for a cut rifle, double that for an original military rifle. The only thing that keeps the Lee Enfield from being my current GoTo rifle is the simple fact that if the fireing pin breaks it requires a special tool to replace, which I haven't got. The SKS and CZ858 are a little easier to work on in that area but do sacrifice range as you stated. However, beyond a couple hundred meters it becomes very difficult to tell the difference between friend and foe for most people. The Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54R gives up the Lee Enfield accuracy, capacity and speed but is also very easy to service. It is the only bolt action I am aware of that you can change all the bolt parts without special tools. All that aside I don't think the Lee Enfield is inferior and more than likely it would go with me and mine!

Hi Turtle... Thanks for this... I suppose it doesn't really matter what platform you have so long as you have all of this stuff for just one rifle. I think the message I am trying to convey is... Wjen the ammo runs out (and it will) you will need to scavenge to make ammo. You won't be able to do what I so in this video with a gas gun - or at least not easily. As stated I think Mosins, Mausers, etc... milspec bolt actions would also be fine cost effective platforms as well. Especially with adjustable sights.... Stay away from scoped platforms in a SHTF platform. You need open sights.

Riflechair The comments seem to be glitched a bit! I agree with you 100% and you are correct about the iron sights, I remember those Hammond Game Getters from my youth, seeing them in magazines all the time. I'm going to do more research on them now and the Lee loading tool that you had. Both of those seem just too handy not to have!

I have 6 Enfields now, I stocked up on ammo years ago when it was cheap. Thinking about starting to reload for it now. You can still get good deals on Enfields if you look around. Year before last I got a nice Savage made one that had been sporterised by cutting the wood back at an auction for $40. Wouldn't have been hard to restore it but I think I'm going to cut the barrel back. I do have a mk5 original Jungle Carbine already though. Last year I picked up a SMLE still in military trim for $70, cleaned up great. Best place to find a good one is at estate auctions and flea markets / yard sales

Awesome video. I agree with you on how awesome the lee enfield is. People arguing that an sks is better because you can get ammo by the crate have a valid point however sooner or later you need to reload and the .303 is going to win there. Also the surplus ammo for the sks is corrosive and need way more cleaning. I think if I had to pick one rifle for me I would prob go with the lee enfield as well. It is fast, reliable, and battle tested and proven for over 100 years

On the modern battlefield, a significant portion of fire has to be suppressing. Its rooted in a deeper combat mentality when swordsmen were just bashing swords and shields to suppress each other's advances. That same concept survives in the modern day. The elitist theory behind marksmanship (making the one shot count) is rooted in centuries of muzzleloading when that was a reality. Conservatives in the military looked down upon new and untested repeaters (Napoleon...the biggest among them rejected the concept) To say an Enfield can give an AR a run for its money is like saying a Brown Bess could take on an Enfield. The danger is proportional. Fire without movement is wasted ammunition...movement without fire is death but fire and movement equals success.
@Riflechair
@Riflechair 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think we're not talking about the modern battlefield but I understand that there may be a need for suppressing fire. However when ammunition becomes a premium commodity very few people will be engaging in suppression fire or wasting any ammo - period. When SHTF occurs my family and I are heading for the hills. Town will become a killing zone where starving desperate people will be willing to take extreme measures to survive. I aim not to be in the middle of that. There is no bunker that can't be broken.

I live in Arizona, USA. Here I can have anything I want except a cannon or machinegun. I can have those if I'm willing to pay a federal tax on them and bow down to the atf. I collect Enfields and I think they have the finest bolt action of any rifle made. If I were limited to bugging out with only one firearm it would be one of my Enfields. I think I would have to go with the No.4 Mk.1 or the Mk.2. I like the No.5 since it is lighter and shorter but the old "Jungle Carbine" suffers from the dreaded wandering zero after the barrel heats up. The No.4 stays true, so my choice would be a No.4 from the ROF Arsenal. Really good video! You are lucky to have all that rain. You probably have more rain in one day than Arizona has all year.

Hi RifleChair. Love your Lee Enfield videos. I managed to pick myself up a Longbranch no4mk1* with Newzealand armory markings all numbers match, :) fully wooded, maple stock in basically as new condition the other day. They are more expensive here, than over there. But I got a bargain considering the prices in New Zealand. It appears your Rifle has different sights to mine. I dont have the "hood" on the foresight and I dont have the dialed 50y increment rear sight. Just the simple flip 300/600yard ones. Ammo is a little on the expensive side. $35-80 for box of 20. The 80$ box being British Federal Powershock 180gr I think. Just wanted to say thankyou for the inspiring me to pursue one as my first rifle over something else. I hope to own the entire family now, :) Ill have to post a video or something of it so you can see

Hello VRforged. It sounds like you found yourself a very nice example. NZ marked enfields are very rare in Canada. My god you need to start reloading if you're paying that much for factory ammo. A lee mold would also be in the works. Essentially the message I am trying to convey is that it doesn't have to be too expensive. Sure you will need to pay a little up front for a beginner reloading kit but YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! You have a fabulous rifle there. Get to know it upside down, inside out. If I could only have one rifle it would be a lee enfield. Good on you mate!

SKS can be had for as little as $180 in Canada, and gazillions of milsurp rounds are dirt cheap. However, the Lee Enfield reaches further, hits harder, and has superior sights. Slightly bigger and heavier though. I agree that the Lee Enfield is a solid choice for SHTF though, especially in Canada, since it legally can hold 10 rounds - you may not have time to drill out those rivets in an SHTF scenario

My biggest problem with the Enfield is barrels that have been worn out and damaged. Second the .303 ammo is often underpowered. A Ruger scout in 308 with a small scope is a more expensive but worthwhile option.

Riflechair Thank you so very much riflechair, i appreciate the amount of effort you put into your videos. I have bought myself a lee metford mk2 action with safety on cocking piece for my shtf rifle, i chose this action as it has a dust cover and in an shtf situation i wont be needing stripper clips/stripper clip guide as ammo would be saved. I have pretty much collected all the parts i need to build my shtf 303 rifle but im waiting on a barrel to show up (smle length barrel), by the way criterion barrels are making new no4 barrels, just hope they make smle heavy barrels anytime soon. Other stuff im trying to get a hold of are fold down aperature mues sights,my shtf rifle will be fully wooded to enable it to take the bayonet up front in smle configuration as it may become a pig/hog sticker in an shtf situation. All inspired by your shtf 303 video. cheers riflechair.

Thanks for making such a great video. I've decided that for me this is the first rifle and maybe the only centerfire rifle I want to own, there's definitely fancier ones out there but I'm not sure any other rifle has been as important to us as a nation as the Lee Enfield, whether it was in a World War or a service rifle for a Canadian Ranger like yourself or one of the countless ones sportorized by someone as an everyday hunting rifle they've become iconic and just another one of the things that really separates us culturally from our southern neighbours. Unfortunately I haven't taken my Firearm Safety/Hunter Safety Course yet and with a majority Liberal gvt I may be too late to get one so easily now.

Hi Roy. What I like about bolt actions is the diversity of ammunition you can run through them. I couldn't do most of this stuff with a gas gun. Sounds like you have some personal experience in these areas too. When it comes down to SHTF Murphy's Law rules the day. We need simplicity and reliability to stay running. When the gas guns break it will be the bolt ,pump and lever guns that see their families through the winter.

Really enjoy your vids. Was a bit perplexed and confused over the comment about you receiving death threats! Here in the States, my interest went initially to the US M1903 series of rifles, for the same reasons I supposse that Canadians prize yer Enfi

Thanks for your video, I've got a Nr 4 mk 2 from December-1954, its best asset is the heavy 174 grain bullet is propelled by 28.5 grains of n140, projuicing 18.5 tons of recoiled flys out at just under 2500 fps., will stop a Elephant smash a car engine block, go through a house wall, and get you your dinner,

Less rounds slower rate of fire= better accuracy and conservation of ammunition I would say excellent SHTF rifle both for 4 and 2 legged game.

Hi joe - sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. No filler / plugs or cream of wheat filler. Just straight powder - good question - I should have clarified.

Hi Tristan. Have you ever seen a chamber insert for the 303 brit? Chamber dimensions on these old enfields can vary quite a bit and after market inserts take a fair amount of liability making and selling them. I've seen a chamber insert for the 45-70 and 455-570 Martini Henry but not the 303 British.

All of mine are for .303 British, If your rifle is good for .303 ammo all these should be safe in it. I've heard if you're not careful you can get warp in the inserts, but I've not had a problem.

Mate are you talking about a chamber adaptor that allows you to fire 7.62 Tokarev through a Lee Enfield .303? My only Centrefire rifle is a No.5 Mk.1, and my only pistol is a Tokarev in 7.62mm so that would be brilliant. If so, what brand?

Hey Riflechair, I was just watching this video again, probably for the tenth or twelfth time (I simply adore the Lee Enfield). I realized that it was only four years ago that .303 British was eighteen dollars a box, give or take. Here in Ontario at least, that cost has more than doubled for factory ammunition. Why do you think that is? Brass, lead, copper, and gunpowder haven't doubled in value (to my knowledge). Do you have any thoughts on why this ammunition in particular is so costly? There are obviously plenty of these rifles around. To my knowledge the .303 British is one of the most mass produced cartridges in history. Are we just being brutally price gouged by ammo makers? Anyways, thank you as always for your awesome videos. This one is a particular favourite of mine. Cheers!

Hey Riflechair, also, have you ever tried or heard of "the load", being 13 grains of Red Dot in use with these Lee .312 cast bullets? Have you ever powder coated your cast loads? Cheers!

I'm glad this video still has some use! As for the ammo - I am completely convinced that we are being gouged on ammo prices now. Every once in a while I find good prices and I post them on facebook. Its more and more rare to see descent prices now.

PPU is still only about 18 of your USD here in 'Straya, considering we get reamed on everything im sure you could still find it much cheaper over there in 'Murica. I hand load for about 50c per round myself and i bet in US you could load for half that, because i repeat, we get bent over and violated here!

Might be fine in Canada (i'm under the understanding that Enfields are far more common and therefore .303 will have better availability. In the US? Absolutely bad choice for SHTF unless you stocked up and can stay in your ammo bunker. Ammo availability is almost more important than the specific gun itself. I've got nothing against Enfields, it's just something else to consider.

Anyone have problems cycling soft-point ammo in their lee enfields?
@Riflechair
@Riflechair 9 жыл бұрын
steelCOYOTE You should only run round nose soft points in an enfield. The feed ramp will impact the spitzers soft points which may have an impact on performance. Should be no problem with ballistic pointed ammo.

I've seen pictures in a case against poachers that where killing moose with .22 long rifle, i personally would not unless it was out of pure necessity, SHTF for example. I enjoyed your video btw, might need some of those gadgets to go along with my SMLE.
