Border Route Trail Thru-Hike with Shug, Alex, Eric & Jonah...PART 1

The Border Route Trail borderroutetrail.org in Northern Minnesota proved to be tougher than I thought it would be. Rained a lot. Trail wet and flooded. Slippery. Fell twice. No harm done to Shug of the Third Person.
Used my ULA Circuit backpack. Hammock was the Dutchware Chameleon. My DIY Blackcrow tarp. Frankenquilt UQ. Hammockgear 30º TQ.
I would like to thank my Black Diamond hiking poles. They saved me several times.
Took us 5 1/2 days and we added miles by taking the Daniels Lake Trail to re-supply. Wanted to see the Daniels Lake Trail as it is a 4 mile spur to the BRT.
Luck gave us cool weather and the bugs were not too bad. The lake views were stunning but most of the time you walk in brush between ridges on this trial. It is VERY OVERGROWN in many places and for long stretches.
We did a total of 73 miles.
Wet feet the whole way. Never dry. Boots swelled and caused some now blackened big toe nails.
The boys were troupers through and through.
We agreed on 90% Challenge and 10% fun.
It feels good to have done it.
All secure in sector seven,
Shug

A little CGI added. If you had said July 26 and then mentioned some fictitious fourth of July activities in which you had participated and at just that moment spliced in a CGI nuclear explosion, you would have increased your viewership by 3x and very probably started a cult religion at the same time.

Not really much I can say that already hasn't been. As always entertaining. I'll have to look through the archives. Have you ever done a video on where you have traveled in the world and the highlights? I spent a few years in the AirForce and got to travel a little outside the U.S. I must say it gave me some perspective. Thinking of moving up to the BeFree with my next filter purchase. Glad to hear and read you give it good marks. Loved that you hung with the younger guys and made a good showing for us older hikers! Vitamin I is a wonderful thing.

I'm gonna pause every minute to comment. man I left my long underwear at a camp site nite one of a 6 day 5 night trek through the lost creek wilderness in Colorado. not as bad as a water bottle I suppose, but snowed 3 days later and was cold as all heck that night and all I could think about was how I left my sleeping "pants" at that first camp site. I'm sure we've all done something like that before that makes you just say "why am I such a dope sometimes?" lol. at least you had another back-up. I just had cold legs and only myself to thank for it haha! still the best trip of my life!

shugemery best trip of my life man. perfect fall weather almost every day. leaves on the aspens were all shades of yellow, red, and orange. No bugs. Snowed on my birthday. only 40ish miles with 6 days five nights. A moose ran by my campsite as I was breaking camp on day 6, literally 10 yards from me. Vistas from 12k feet plus. Colorado vistas with fall foliage no less. I might have been kicking myself for leaving my long underwear and having cold legs, but I don't know if anyone in the world had better then me that week.

Loved the views, the loon looning, the fog on the lake, the flowers and that peculiar sentence written on a birch bark "with all the strength of a great typhoon". What do you think it means?

Good stuff! I was just wondering the other day when you'd put out a new video. Are you doing your Linville Gorge trip this year? I was over that way a few weeks back mountain biking and thought about you when I saw some of the pretty views.

Nice vid Shug. I got intersted in the Border Route Trail (can we say BRT? is it as cool as other three letter trails?) when I finished the northern section of the SHT. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the trail. I have heard that the trail maintenance isn't as good as other fine trails in your (our) area.

Did you ever think of wearing a linen shirt while hiking? It's mighty breathable, natural, and feels nice on the skin. Did i mention it's quick drying and non stinky? It's my favorite kind of shirt since I'm half caveman.
