I hate to say it but I have experienced this in work before. A bureaucrat has a hard on about something and can’t be reasoned with no matter how hard you try to explain. You eventually have to give up and calm the ache in your stomach because of the inevitable meltdown you know know will happen but they don’t understand. The worst part is they won’t take responsibility and will try to blame you for the results of them not listening to you.

Being a movie, there is some hidden gems here on interaction and cause/effect that get taken for granted in current times. The entire scene in the basement exemplifies how Peck is used to being in authority and ordering others around, even against better judgement. The utility worker flat out states, "I've never seen anything like this before" but is told to shut it off despite his own misgivings and warnings of danger. By any given logical rights, that should have been the end of the scene and them calling for an inspection to make sure no one got Hurt attempting this. Chernobyl was still 2 years from happening, but Three Mile Island was still very much a recent event and a lot closer to home for New Yorkers. Fear of a catastrophe in down town would have been prominent for everyone involved. Peck's moral rectitude in that he had to have this done, right now, no excuses. Is a fantastic portrayal of "I have authority, it has to be used" mentality, that usually leads to bad decisions, and excusing it as it wasn't Their fault the decision was bad. Great scene

So, are we to assume that the Ghostbusters never had the appropriate paperwork to run something in a business that was as dangerous as a core meltdown in a nuclear plant? Guess I'll have to rewatch it.

Permits are only required after they've been made available. Since they were a group of scientists and engineers running experiments they probably had the required permits for the materials and equipment. However no one ever thought ghosts were real and these guys literally developed the tech to capture, contain, and study them. There's no permit for true newly developed tech. Peck was just on a war path because the Ghost busters wouldn't play to his belief and ego. So being the bureaucratic bug he is, he whipped up enough frenzy in the system to get other people to give him whatever he needed to screw with the Ghost Busters. Which from what I've heard about doing business in New York City is so true to life I'm amazed the city hasn't imploded already. Though they are well on their way considering it costs 5k a month for 100 sqft studio apartment and businesses are either pulling out or dieing off.

@@LucianDevine That's true since he probably felt threatened by Walter Peck to shut down the machine. Then unfortunately, Walter Peck put the blame on the Ghostbusters like it was the Ghostbusters who did it just to act innocent. Luckily he was fired after this movie (not shown) from the Environmental Protection Agency as seen on "The Real Ghostbusters" since he was probably reported that it was him who did the arrangement for the shutdown.

@afriendofbean Ай бұрын
@@nickigentry9651 Well, the news editor J. Jonah Jameson sounds like he's more jealous of Spiderman and/or he finds Spiderman as a criminal. However, after Peter Parker temporarily lost his powers, everyone including Mr. Jameson thought Spiderman left and Mr. Jameson took the blame for it thinking he scared Spiderman away but unfortunately, he found Spiderman as a criminal again after Peter got his powers back and got his uniform back from the "Daily Bugle." Plus, Mr. Jameson didn't like Spiderman on the front pages. But yes, Walter Peck only hates the Ghostbusters only because Peter Venkman refused to allow him to see the containment grid and even warned Venkman that he either allows him to see it or gets a court order and Venkman told him to get a court order and then he will sue him (Peck) in court. Then Peck did get the court order with Venkman walking in saying that he wants to cooperate in any way with Peck saying "forget it Venkman, you had your chance to cooperate but you chose to insult me, so it's my turn now." I guess the other reason Peck would hate the Ghostbusters is because, he (Peck) didn't know how dangerous it would get once the containment grid gets shut off even though Venkman warned saying not to shut it off and Egon Spengler said "if you shut that off we are not going to be held responsible" and then out of anger and fear, Peck put the blame on the Ghostbusters framing them saying that they caused the explosion.

2:23 Power outages happen all the time. So if the government guys had not turned off the power, eventually this catastrophe would have happened anyways during a power outage. Or if they were smart enough to put in a back up generator, the catastrophe would have been delayed for a couple hours until the fuel for the generator ran out. But the government folks would have heard the generator turn on and would have insisted on turning that off too.

It’s not said one way or the other if they have backup generators, but they turned off the main kill switch that is the breaker that is directly tied into the unit. So even if they DO have generators, the power from them could not reach the unit anyway, as the circuit was off.
@plowe6751

@@JohnDoe-zr8pc All the lights were out when everybody was running out of the building. That would suggest that the electrician turned off the main switch to all the power in the building -- not the switch that powers the containment unit only. Also, in Ghostbusters 2, Ray Stantz causes a power outage while underground. You would think that a second catastrophe of ghosts being released would have occurred, but this time caused by a ghostbuster and not an EPA agent. This is assuming that the containment unit was repaired and operational after the first catastrophe.

He’s begging to be killed by arc flash.

For the people bringing up the issue of backup generators: The main kill switch was shut off by Peck (or his tech guy in this case). That kill switch literally keeps any & all electricity from going past that point when turned off (pulled down), so any power coming from any generators wouldn’t make it to the machine anyway, because Peck had his guy shut it off at the main transfer switch.

Peck actually was right, in as much as they were operating an unlicensed and un-inspected piece of massive electricity using equipment, and had four mini proton accelerator packs, which were basically unlicensed mini nuclear reactors. However, he (like a typical bureaucrat) had “little man syndrome”, and let his ego & arrogance take over & cloud his better judgment. He should’ve ignored Venkman, and just listened to his tech, who told him he’d never seen anything like that, then called in a team of engineers & electrical experts to investigate how it worked.

First rule in being an Electrician never Energize or de-energize equipment that you are not familiar with. No Electrical drawing is a red flag, I would trust more the person that wired it, before listening to a person that knows little about electrical. If the power couldn't be cut from the outside, I'm definitely not going inside throwing disconnect switches unless I haven't read prints. Legally its your license on the line if something goes wrong, warrant or not.
