In this video, we'll show you how to bracket photos for HDR on your Nikon camera. By bracketing your photos, you can create dynamic and beautiful HDR photos that you wouldn't be able to create by capturing just a single frame.

Its worth watching this video just for the 2 second timer hack. Saves me pressing the shutter button 3 times. Worth its weight in gold. Thank you.

I can honestly say that I have always learned something from pretty much every photography video I have ever watched. On this video I learned how to quickly switch between AutoISO and manual ISO using the front dial while holding down the ISO button. And it works on my D7500 as we as my Z5 and Z8. That alone was worth watching this whole video.

This is fantastic. I want to take HDR photos of the 2024 total eclipse. I need a 400 mm Nikon lens and a camera. What equipment do you recommend (rented). Thanks, Paul

Agreed that the 2 second timer advice is valuable. What is your opinion of the best way for an "enthusiast" photographer to edit specifically in Lightroom (I have Lightroom CC) with the intention of taking the edge off of an HDR processing in Lightroom? Sometimes the photo is good with a more exacting harsh saturated look but I mostly go with a softer approach. I see the value and use HDR when faced with exposure extremes to capture more detail. However, the thought of using editing software beyond Lightroom makes my enthusiasm begin to wane. Thanks

The problem for me with using Lightroom to merge an HDR using the LR built in function is that it does just an okay job. A dedicated piece of software - like Aurora or Neo with the merge plug-in gives better results. That being said, setting the white and black point in Lightroom should create a pleasing image... but that may be a video for another day.

This tutorial is supposed to about HDR with Nikon cameras, but you show an example using DJI drone images. If you right click on Nikon Z bracketed images and Export to HDR Merge in Neo you get the images without the automatic lens correction, so you get horrendous barrel distortion. I'm looking for a way to fix this?? (if you export using Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments it only exports the first of the bracketed sequence, which is useless). Any ideas??

Ok. I just rented a Z6 II body and the 400 mm F/4.5 lens. I think I’m set. Thanks for the great tutorials. I wrote software at NASA Langley that registered digital images to within 1/1000th of a pixel and then provided a HDR image based on DeBevac’s algorithm. It was fun learning that stuff. Where can I get the software you used to combine the images and post process? Paul

Hi there, is there any way to keep the self timer setting after taking the picture without having to set it again for every picture. I have a Nikon d5500. Thanks!

The trick, as we age, is to remembering to re-zero the number of exposures. Joe, I do 3 images handheld, Photoshop Merge to HDR pro gets the alignment perfect and I have sliders to make adjustments. Your image of the bridge came out great but Luminar Neo doesn't seem to get the alignments correct?

Hi Joe...question for you...when I press the shutter release to initiate the taking of multiple shots for the HDR range of shots, I have to press and hold the shutter release button to take the number of shots selected (3 or 5 shots in the range). Any idea why I can't press the shutter release once to capture the number of shots selected as you do in the video? I'm shooting with a Z6 II; firmware is up to date. All my HDR settings mirror yours in the video. And those settings work - it's just the shutter release question I can't resolve. Maybe a shutter release setting elsewhere in the menu system?

You need to set the camera to the 2 second timer - that will trigger the whole series with one button push.

@@ShutterSpeak mmm...nope. Tried this delay technique - no go. Still only one frame taken. This is a Z6 II with a stock lens (24-70) that came with the camera. (Not a third party lens.) Can't figure this out. Regardless, thanks for populating your site with the quality content you have. All good stuff...this one has me stumped.

Why you don't like nikon auto HDR? For some of us saving time in the post processing mean more time for our hobbies, family .... what are we losing with auto HDR in your opinion? Thanks
@ShutterSpeak

For most people using photography is a hobby and we want to spend time enjoying the creative process. So I would want more control over the final product rather than letting my camera decide what it thinks my image should be.

@ShutterSpeak sure, I understand your point of view, but since modern cameras can give you both (a ready hdr and the single pictures used) I still think that's the best option for an amateur.
