So, here's a story about Diplomacy: Back in law school, the law library had assigned study carrels for all students. But the number of carrels exceeded the number of students, so there were extra. We set up a Diplomacy board in one of the vacant carrels, and we made one move per week, on Friday Afternoon. Everyone dropped their move slips into a cup Friday morning, and then we'd pull out the moves Friday afternoon. And then we'd spend the next week, in between classes, having clandestine meetings with each other and plotting to stab each other in the back. I've played Diplomacy as a sit-around-the-table game, and...eh. But doing the one-move-a-week game over the course of a school year? Amazeballs. The tension was fabulous, and it really made great use of the thing the game was built to do--make people meet with each other behind everyone else's back and lie to each other. If you're looking to play Diplomacy with the interns, don't do it as a video. Do it as a running graphic on the website, with one move a week, made very, very slowly. That's my two cents.

This is something that many adults lose as they face the burdens of the world, but it is actually important for our mental health to keep that spark of playfulness alive. When I watched this video the first time back in 2019 I had been playing board games for about 3 years but had not started my own collection. Now that I have a pretty decent sized collection, it was fun to come back to this video and see all of the games I am now intimately familiar with and are in my collection. I have to say I am very surprised by Quinn's take on Vital Lacerda games. On Mars is one of my favorites of all time and the Gallerist was my introduction to his designs. It seems like something that would be right up Quinn's alley. But then again, they do attempt to be simulationist in the most abstract ways and I can see how you would either love it or hate it.

Diplomacy is a great game to play during a games day or weekend. Set it up on a side table or even in another room. Then play your other games throughout the day as normal however during downtime players can also negotiate their Diplomacy turns and when ready submit their turn (maybe drop their paper orders into a jar in the main gaming room). Every hour or two just pause what you're doing to resolve a turn of Diplomacy. Diplomacy is also a great play by email game if you have a big game group. It requires a GM to collect the turns and email the results and map to everyone. Usually 1 or 2 turns per week. Gives time for the players to call/text/email each other for negotiation.

I often say the name Reiner Knizia in public for no reason. The words are so lovely to speak.

Playing a game of Diplomacy is like the scene from The Dark Knight where the Joker has a job offer, and a broken billiard cue. The game being the Joker, and the players the applicants.

At the risk of being 'that guy', your shelf seems to be organized like a Venn diagram rather than on axes.

This is just 26 minutes of Quinns defending his collections of things- and it's great. Though frankly, that 2-axis system was pretty shaky.

Thank you Quinn !!! Amazing to see that you also appreciate the Citadels game. I believe this game is sooo underrated. The art is beautiful (I have the older version that is not so cartoon-like), it's portable, it's simple to teach etc. I love the vibe this artwork brings to the game. I guess people are thrown away by the rather long "character selecation" phase. But if you have a certain strategy in mind, it's actually quite a fast process.

I remember I had the chance to say hi to Quinns the first year SUSD did the GDC showcase (Mysterium, Codenames, etc..), and we talked about how I was just getting into board games and had no friends to play with yet, but my favorite app was Tigris and Euphrates. His eyes glazed over like I had so so much to learn (which I did...) Nonetheless I'm happy to see T+E and Knizia's other classics have come out in full force since then, comprising their own genre. They are timeless!

Knowing what you keep is so useful! And so is a series like CGTDS... I always love your guys's humor and your gaming priorities. But with all BG experts on the Internet, I'm really just sifting through everyone's cult-of-the-new bias for just the evergreen stuff. Topics like this give me hope that you guys will eventually find me a smaller firehose.

I love love love Legend of the Five Rings RPG and own every book and module printed from 1st to 4th edition. My friends and I played so long we transitioned our characters each time to match the new editions of the game.

I've actually had a lot of success with Hanafuda, specifically the game Koi-koi. When teaching it I tend to aim for a 6-round game instead of the traditional 12 rounds, so as not to shackle people to a game they might not like, but out of the dozen or so people I've explained the game to over the years, *ALL* of them, without exception, wanted to continue after 6 rounds and play the full game to the end. It does require a lot of explaining at first, though. Usually I don't explain everything in one go, but add card combinations after each round (starting with the ones that are easiest to remember), and explaining some of the more granular rules as they become relevant, getting closer and closer to the full game over the course of 3 or 4 rounds.

Aw man, I was hoping you'd mention why you had Wiz War in your "bad but I keep them anyway section" Wiz War (The original edition) was one of the first board games I played that wasn't a roll & move game (or risk), and I really enjoyed it back in the 90s. The reprint changed some rules around and, I feel, took it from an ok game to a worse game. The original had a small box! It was my uncle's game, and me and my cousins liked it so much that my aunt tried to buy us copies. After a few years of waiting to see if it'd ever be printed again, she decided to make her own version, with nice card stock and that kinda cork-y cardbard for the tiles. She added in custom cards for the family too, it was really cute and memorable. I was really tall growing up (still am), so my spell lets you grow really tall and walk over a labyrinth wall. Anyway, I saw the reprint, bought it immediately, and was fairly disappointed. They changed some rules, and then in the back of the rulebook, mentioned an "alternative" way to play that was just all the old rules! I guess they tried to improve it, realized they didn't (couldn't? I'm not sure what i'd change, other than finding a way to make it more confrontational), and shipped it out anyway. Cool video, looking forward to more as usual

Knightmare Chess is fun, if you like a bit of chaos in your chess. I haven't played my copy in a long time, though. This video merely points out just how different our collections are, how very different our tastes are, beyond the very few games we both seem to have in common. With that said, I also like to collect RPG books and whether I actually play those games or not one day, remains to be seen, but probably not. They are fun to read regardless. I used to collect a bunch of the Warhammer 40k source books as well. And I also have a bunch of X-Wing in my closet that I hope to one day play.

Twilight Imperium: Rex might be my favorite game. No other game has driven me into such marvelous paroxysms of second guessing my friends and their bluffs.

Batman GCC is a a newer version of Conan with updated rules based on feedback... plus it's obviously the genre change :) . It also has a 1 vs 1 expansion where both players use a GM board.The Batmobile as a model!!! And during the campaign after a player suggestion they added a campaign where the GM plays the good guys and players the bad guys. That said next year Monolith should be producing more Conan expansions and they will probably update the rules to be similar to Batman.
