It's really weird that they were like, "We can't make the chinese and native americans the evil enemies, that's messed up." But also "Women only dress like cosplayers paying their college fund through a strip club." I'd at least respect it if they doubled down and had conan being the foreign english invader wiping out the continent of natives. This is just a weak half compromise that's neither lore accurate, nor compatible with the modern thing where, you know, women aren't objects.

Me too. Not sure why Batman GCC got such a harsh review and this one is gushing, though. It's the same game system, same setup for both games, and BGCC seems to have more scenarios which is one of the main complaints here. Yeah the rulebook is divisive, but that's really the only downside of BGCC.
@hoodaguy
@hoodaguy 5 жыл бұрын
@@kennethfharkin While there have been (valid) complaints about the rulebook, let's not exaggerate by calling it "unintelligible" because that is far from the truth. Sure, it could have been better, no argument there, but it is far from the travesty that some are making it out to be. It's actually quite easy to find what you're looking for, and by the time you are halfway through it all starts making sense. It's just not the typical rulebook we're used to.
@hoodaguy
@hoodaguy 5 жыл бұрын
@@kennethfharkin Yeah that's true. I think Monolith was trying to address the Conan complaints and overcompensated by over-explaining everything this time around. I also do find it a little weird that they seem to be so stubborn against native English speakers. If the public tells you once that should be enough to listen, but they didn't and then scrambled to get Board Game Coffee to do it when more complaints came. And sadly they still don't seem to care much because Season 2 reportedly will just have typographical fixes apparently.

What’s so interesting about the backlash against depiction of women is that it was actually a woman who drew all of the illustrations for Howard’s (and many other pulp stories). People in the 30’s new what sells and Conan is incredible. Bravo for the designers staying true to the source material. Also, Howard depicted many woman as strong warrior types and not just damsel’s in distress. There just wasn’t an equal number as the men because the Hyborian Age is about a gritty, realist take on fantasy.

@Doom314
@Doom314 7 жыл бұрын
You're off a bit on your Hyboria. Khitai was never visited explicitly in R E Howard stories; I reckon your "quite a bit of research" was 2 minutes on the Wiki page. It was mentioned a few times as "far off Khitai", and it was hinted that he may have raided the borders when he was a Hyrkanian (Turkish, perhaps, although Mongolia is possible) mercenary; Khitai may have been China, but it could also be Tibet and part of Korea/Viet Nam. The Picts were not necessarily native Americans, however...they were the descendants of the fall of Atlantis, or predecessors of the Celts. Finally, Conan fought "dark wizards," but if you were to give him one primary enemy, it'd be the dark wizard Thoth-Amon, a wizard from Stygia (Africa, possibly Egypt...but was always depicted as very dark skinned, a prince of wizards)...totally not Khitai.
@NefariousKoel
@NefariousKoel 6 жыл бұрын
This. The 'Picts' were intended to be the distant primitive ancestors of modern man. Howard's Hyborian age was set in a fictional period long before known history, with knowledge of it lost to time. In the real world, the name 'Pict' is, of course, the name used to refer to the ancient natives of Scotland whose culture is long gone and largely a mystery to modern scholars. Not native americans. Khitai doesn't feature much in Howard's stories. It certainly has a Chinese & eastern asia flavor. It's not specifically called out as some terrible entity. Actually less so than numerous others, including Hyborian nations inspired by various European, Near Eastern, and African cultures. As 'R Doom' mentioned, Stygia is often the most maligned in the stories due to it's religion which embraces dark sorcery, and an economy largely based on slavery. Thematically it has Egyptian themes, but with the aforementioned evil sorcerers running the place. I think the core set could've used an extra female character to play. But Belit, the pirate queen, was a good choice for the grim & brutal theme. In Howard's story, she's a greatly feared pirate who frees Conan, they fall in love, and she takes him as her consort & king. They briefly go a'piratin together until discovering a ghastly place and sad tragedy. My point is that there's no need to look for modern social trespasses in historical literature, and attempt to erase or change them. Especially if you're not familiar with the material you're proposing to censor. If that's a priority, then you should probably stick to sanitized products or create '1984 the boardgame'.

I don’t care either way, and am no expert on Conan lore, but I just wanted to point out that Khitai is literally the word for China in Russian and other Slavic languages. So it’s pretty obviously a reference to China and/or East Asia.

That's a friggin' good point about the kickstarter extras and community content. I hit the wall with that on a few occasions and it was frustrating to have to go ask what I could go about replacing the scenario with (often creating copies of that exclusive work and resorting to use stand-in pieces to fill in the scenario. less cool, but thats the post kickstarter world we live in.) On the other side of that same coin however that same community is usually REALLY helpful in that regard too. But it is indeed friction. Sometimes that exclusive content is provided in digital btw. Don't hesitate to ask the source (Legit PnP.) and I don't think that belittles the original exclusivity of the printed pieces (imo)

Robert E. Howard explicitly said in the short stories the Picts were "white men." He did look at the ancestors of the native Americans of his home of Texas as his inspiration for what a more primal society would resemble and to add details but people assume this means he intended them to be RACIALLY non-white and his story centring them most explicitly states they are white. I suspect he drew from the culture, lifestyle and dress of the native Americans with only a very thin veneer laid over that but did not intend them to BE native Americans.

An entertaining review as always gents. The one thing I feel you failed to mention is how unclear the rules can be. They've been translated from French and often leave things out or are just plain wrong. I've been researching forum threads on BoardGameGeek.com to prepare for a big game today. Listening to your "How to play" section sent up some immediate red flags. (1:41) You still get your free movement if you take an action like attack first. The rules wording is trying to explain that you can't mix up that free movement with any action without losing the rest of it. From that point on you need to pay crystals for additional movement. (3:34) You can't chill and attack. When you take a cautious stance, you can only defend and reroll. (5:59) The example you give for how Hindering works is fine for moving from one space to another. Leaping from a ship is an action this specific scenario states isn't affected by hindering. Conan can make that jump without any aid from Shevatas. He wouldn't pay an additional cost for the leap. And this is a bit of a quibble, but "Everything" isn't harder with enemies in the same space. Melee attacks and defense rolls are 2 examples of actions that aren't affected by Hindering, just to be clear. (7:33) Conan breaking through a wall should cost 3 crystals. The proper translation from the French rules is that it costs 2 additional movement. This is what I've pieced together doing work I shouldn't need to do after playing over $100 and waiting an additional year. They say a 2.0 manual is being worked on and will be released soon. I understand you aren't a "How to Play" show and are giving a us a quick taste of the rules. But pointing out how poor a translation job Monolith provided is at least as important as the sexism points you make. I also appreciate you focused on just the retail package. (But crack open that King's Pledge box and you'll find more playable females. Two are fully clothed and one even has PANTS!) Keep up the great work. Forever grateful for the job you did making Mech vs. Minions better.

Read some Robert E Howard. They are being faithful to the stories which were written in the 30's and they were of their time. Conan spends a lot of his time near naked too.

Also Brian Woods take on Conan is largely considered by Conan fans to be the worst adaptation of Conan ever.

Yes, if you watch further in the review, you'll see they acknowledge this. And then go on to show that the board game *isn't* faithful in its depiction of race. So it's a choice the designers made that racism is problematic and needs changing, and sexism doesn't. Whether that matters to you as a buyer is your own decision.

Radical Dog well in REHs world the Picts have three very different versions. They went for the Bran Mak Morn versions presumably to give them a different look to the rest of the minis. Howard was so a proto feminist and wrote strong female characters like Red Sonya when he wasn't chasing the weird tales doller. Also the Khitai sorcerer's did look demonlike. Check Dark Horse's People Of The Black Circle for a really great take. I also want to say that I don't want to come across as one of those internet people (even though I probably already have) and say you did a great video.

You know what wild if you read the story it base on you realized how fragile he his both physical spirituality against the monster he fights. The very first Conan story he all ready King he older man and goes up against some straight terrors that truly fuck with him.

I'd have to argue that the original art for Conan, which that kind of art and style used in this game perfectly mimicks....is perfect and absolutely breathtaking. And using someone you pick up in a miniatures game as an object isn't something new or sexist. It's a simple game mechanic that allows smooth ease of play.

Shut Up & Sit Down The reprint KS begins on the 25th of November, so it's coming back in stock...eventually. Poots is Poots, we gave up trying to stick with a schedule with him years ago. Understand, though. Maybe a thoughts video?

Even if it was on stock i think the price and the magnitude of the game-which is beyond amazing and with awesome theme- would make the audience for it be either no one or such a few people it would not justify the review !!

KDM is horribly overpriced and as such is a bit of a con. Don't get me wrong, it'[s a good game but just isn't worth the money.

I can agree with most points on this. It's big, it's ridiculously expensive (prohibitively so), and calling it a boardgame and not a miniatures game is misleading. It's cumbersome! But it's incredible. And it's absurd. And the weirdest thing is that it exists, but even more so that it's good. Somehow. Impossibly. I'm not sure that it's something Quinn, Pip, Matt or Paul would put on their website as a normal boardgame review, but instead something more of a spectacle review, like their Mega Game ones. Just to showcase some of the interesting things that boardgames are capable of. EDIT: And now that I think about it more, I wonder if it actually conflicts with SU & SD's core values? To my thought (Shut Up and Sit Down account person, correct me if I'm wrong), the website was set up to be inclusive, and to show people all the kinds of games that they can play. You! You at home can own this thing, and play it with your friends and family, and it's a totally lovely thing. Realistically, it's hard to fit a $400 boardgame into that, because by its very nature owning it warrants a certain threshold of disposable income not widely available . And no one wants to watch a review for something they can never have. ... however. It is the single most unique boardgame experience I've had since SUSD convinced me to start playings bgs with Citadels. While they may not do a review of it, I'd love for them all to play it and to hear their thoughts. Paul! Take a trip down to the American Southwest! We'll show you KD, our cacti, and our large mounds of dirt we've mistakenly labeled mountains but never bothered to correct.

So, like many a thing, needs more Grace Jones. Overall, sounds a lot like HeroQuest, but with less missions and campaigns. But the similarities being that using the materials for your own quests might be more rewarding than just using the ones in the box.

Interesting that the "spend effort gems" mechanics actually comes from older tabletop RPGs that were trying to break the D&D mold. The 2003 Marvel RPG is one of them.
