Excellent in every respect. I know this work quite well. Saraste has been a favorite conductor of mine for about twenty years. For this performance, he really brings the youth and passion of Sibelius 1 to life. Outstanding, superhuman playing from the Oslo Philharmonic. The camera work is some of the best I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Bravo! Across the board. A simply brilliant production of aural and visual perfection.

Unequivocally this is the finest performance I’ve ever heard and believe me I’ve heard a hell of a lot, both recorded and live.

Sibelius no 1. I have most of the recordings but this one from Saraste and the Oslo Phil is wonderful and I think tops the lot. Thanks KZfaq.

A special thank you for bringing this to us. Sibelius Sym #1 is one of the great #1s by anybody. I have owned many Sibelius recordings, but this one is very fine. This one starts out with the composer saying, "listen to me, i have a lot to say". This video should provide the audience with a great mood, and an appreciation of a fine conductor and orchestra.

J'ai eu beaucoup de mal à entrer véritablement dans l'écoute de la musique de Sibelius... Mais maintenant je découvre et apprecie chaque jour plus sa musique... Quelle richesse dans cette musique...

Oh my gosh, the motif starting at 4:05 is other worldly. The harp syncopation - what a sublime musical moment.

The first entrance of the second theme of the Finale is positively divine! Some of the finest camera work (a frequently neglected aspect) I have ever seen - and perhaps one of the most underestimated symphonies in the literature.
@TheVaughan58 жыл бұрын
"Underestimated"? Certainly not in Europe when it is played frequently and always receives a great response. 50 years ago Sibelius was a bit out of fashion but this is certainly not the case any more!
@LuizBHMG8 жыл бұрын
Yeah! The second entrance of this thema is even better!!

@@TheVaughan5 the second and fifth symphony are rated a lot more than the first one.
@TheVaughan54 жыл бұрын
@@specialperson335 The 2nd and 5th might get more performances but as for “rated a lot more” - no, only perhaps by people who have scant knowledge about Sibelius’ symphonic output and fall into the old trap of - “I know what I like and I like what I know” -lol

Jukka-Pekka's interpretation of this particular is far more subtle and powerful in various shades than Karajan, Gergiev or his fellow Sibelius Academy graduate Esa Salonen!

+gnypp45 I'd go further than that and say absolutely wonderful performance! The sweep and majesty of the first movement has seldom sounded so magnificent as it does here - so many conductors seem unable to bring this off as JPS does here!

I've always though the live performance I heard with Lawrence Foster and the CSO at Ravinia in the 1970s was the benchmark performance of this work. Though, since the CSO has never issued it on CD to my knowledge, I have never been able to give that performance a second hearing, I think this might be very much the equal, if not in some respects better. (Curiously, the acoustic sound here is very much like that of the Ravinia Pavilion--- which is much better than what your hear in Orchestra Hall in downtown Chicago, unless you're on main floor 3rd row). Main difference, at 13:15-25 Lawrence Foster took a much slower tempo, and played it louder., with a bit of a crescendo (My guess: Foster wrote that cresc in. But it worked). The effect was so dramatic as to be startling. A head on collision, as it were, with the full "CSO sound" of the time (which included Frank Miller 1st cello). What was that sound like? What I hear here is the closest approximation of it I have ever heard. With that as background, let me say, the Oslo Phil is a great orchestra, every bit the equal of any playing today.

A very sensitive interpretation, probably better than the ones I have heard before.

Diferentemente do maestro Berglund e, mais ainda, do maestro Vanska Saraste fez uma leitura da sinfonia com um andamento um pouco mais lento. Excelente orquestra, excelente intérprete, muita precisão na regência.

As a Québécois, I can only identify with the music of Sibelius. Québec and Finland have a lot in common. For example, both had been dominated by minority groups (English/Canadians in Québec, Russians and Swedish in Finland) Québec hasn’t yet achieved independence, unlike Finland, but it will come :)
