Did you all notice that he did the staccato passages in the last mvt upbow and then downbow? That was mind blowing!

Kavakos has a CRAZY staccato, there is another video showing how he does it in (i think) Wieniawsky's 1st violin concerto. I believe the video is titled "Leonidas Kavakos' legendary flying staccato"

I used to think Vengerov has the best redition of this concerto, full of passion with soaring dynamic and lyrical phrasing. He literally is singing with his violin. Now I feel this concert by Kavakos is equally amazing for different reasons. Kavakos has this pure golden tone with such cleaness and resonance/projection. His technique is beyond impeccable and the passion hides behind his sublime shifts. I used to think he is cold and unemotional in both his music and his playing demeanor and frankly didn't appreciate his music because it was too academic/cerebral for me. This concert shows a side of his playing that I am thrilled to discover.

agreed, I am very partial to the Vengerov interpretation. But Kavakos has some really special pensive (what to call it) colors he brings to this deeply complex piece of music. Anyhow, I agree with you

Just listen to his encore of the Ysaye 2nd last movement, such passion and musicality, I have never heard it played like he does. Also his Paganini 5th is beyond impressive. And to think he had this technique since he was 18!

Each violinist has his own energy and his own particular way of performing an immortal masterpiece of music. It takes intelligence, and a lot of it, to be a concert performer and, of course, a good instrument. It's the first time I hear this concert violinist. I'm in awe, he's a star of the first magnitude

I just listened to 3 performances of this concerto, the first by Elina Vahala recorded in Finland and of the original score, the second by Hilary Hahn, her recording also done in Finland and in the same hall but of the revised score. I definetly thought Hilary was the best. Then I saw a recording of the same piece on KZfaq, the revised score by Kavakos and I have to say that I could tell no difference in the violinists of the last two. I must admit that I am no violinist, I am not even a real musician. But I am 82 years old and have been listening to classical music since I was a teenager and have been a season ticket holder in Baltimore through both David Zinman's time there and Timirkanovs as well. I have been here in Charleston, SC since I left Baltimore and have been a seanson ticket holder here since 2015. I have an extensive LP record collection and have duplicated most of it in CD's. I have always thought that I have a good ear, I have excellent relative pitch, but not absolute pitch. I thought I could find some more of the Sibelius Violin Concertos on You Tube and I was fabergasted by more than I could ever compare all of the recording here. But I can truthfully say that I could not tell the difference, in tone, timing, feeling or expression between the two. I have to admit that of the two, Hilary is much cuter.

@@odw32 That's funny because it's the opposite for me, I tend to get distracted when the soloist pulls weird faces or dances around. I find it much easier to focus on the music watching Kavakos or Hilary Hahn perform than when it's Janine Jansen or Joshua Bell. (Of course I don't deny they all are tremendous musicians, it's just a little quirk of mine...)

I judge a violinist's sound only by attending a concert. Judging a violin's sound based on a video is spurious at best. Furthermore, I find Kavakos technically sloppy here, especially in the last movement. Someone said his technique is beyond 'impeccable'. I beg to differ.
