Sometimes I feel like I'm messing up soooo bad that it's actually an insult 🤦🏾‍♀️like let me just stop, I'm making a mess of the whole thing and I don't want to be embarrassed for trying and failing 😬

I'm Latino and I don't care how people pronounce SPANISH. Bob is absolutely right. Judging people about how they pronounce a colonial language that was brutally forced onto millions of people is corny. I'm honored when people try to communicate with me to the best of their *abilities*. Why waste brain cells dissecting someone's intentions towards you based on how they pronounce things in a language they aren't fluent in?

I agree totally, same with learning french and even Hungarian. When you use the language and put effort into the correct accent, not only are you much more easily understood (even if you're slower-speaking) but it's almost always appreciated by the native speaker for a myriad of reasons.

@@MattIsntYoung But there are different accents in Spanish so how do you decide which one to go with? (And judge people by!) There are dialects/accents in Spanish I don't understand and I'm a native speaker.

Also its escuela azul, escuela de azul would mean the school of blue. Adjectives can go in front of nouns in Spanish but it can change the meaning. Eg. la escuela grande, means the big school, but la gran escuela, mean the great/important school. Spanish is an amazing language neither Bob or Monet should feel embarrassed, the only way to learn is to make mistakes.

I think they’re both right. I think the media tends to use southern accents to promote negative stereotypes like stupidity and backwardsness. But when face to face with someone who has a southern accent, people who aren’t southern are generally charmed or at the very least amused by the accent. -a lady from SC

@@MattIsntYoung Most liberals (like Bob and Monet) judge white, monolingual Americans for mispronouncing ethnic names but POC immigrants get away with it, and they should! As long as someone is trying, that's all that should matter. In Bob's example, if you're speaking English, saying Surjeeoh is easier than saying Serheeyo with a Spanish accent. I speak Spanish fluently as well and if I'm speaking English, I say tortilla (for example) in an American English accent, not spanish. I find it exhausting t o roll my rs in between non-rolled r's unless I'm exclaiming in Spanish. It's hard to switch back and forth! Thank you for reading my journal entry.

yeah it felt to me like bob was approaching it from someone being /unable/ to pronounce things the native way, and monet from someone being /unwilling/ to, or just not bothering to try, even if they know how to. monet clearly has known people that were receiving instruction in a language, but chose not to follow it (as have i with classmates), but bob hasnt so maybe thats why bob wasnt really picturing people that are just choosing to say things kind of wrong.

A lot of foreigners truly appreciate the effort. But it also depends on the location and situation. Example: I went to France and could tell I was being judged harshly for attempting the accent especially in a business/restuaramt setting. However we had 3 foreign exchange students in my dorm in college in the USA and I could tell they liked my efforts. If you speak the local language well, the efforts to speak with foreigners is seen as commendable.

exactly. i was in a half french program in school, aiming to teach us (english-speaking canadian kids from a non-francophone area, basically none of us had any french background outside of school) french. while none of us obtained perfect fluency from it, because thats just so hard to do when class is the only time you use it, twelve years of almost half french instruction and work is a damn long time to pick up a decent accent, at least as good as can be expected from a non-native thats not properly immersed. but by the end of twelve years, id say that about half of my classmates french accents were terrible. like, roughly on par with someone that began learning french a month ago. not because it was too hard, or they were unable, but because they just couldnt be assed. for those twelve years we learned how we should sound, and everyday for twelve years they resolutely chose not to do it lmao. they read french words more or less how one would read them in english. and i mean, if they dont care about obtaining a decent accent then thats fine, it doesnt bother me. but it was very clearly a choice, because we all had the exact same education, and those of us that put effort into a good accent have one, and the rest dont. intent and effort are the big factors for me. i dont think people need to bend over backwards or monitor their speech that much, and frankly i love accents so a world where everyone is able to conform to the native one 100% would be really sad and undesirable for me. but if you DO know how to pronounce a word properly, and youre easily able to, why not just do it? like it is a little strange to purposefully pronounce something incorrectly imo, especially if you have actual experience with the language, which i feel is kind of just what monet is getting at, and reminded me a lot of my classmates. they mention spanish-speaking people speaking english with a spanish accent, but accents in ones second language like that are usually the result of not comfortably being able to "lose" your native accent, which is... normal unless you were raised bilingual from a young age. even though i put a lot of effort into my french accent, someone in france would know i'm north american right away. but i am still doing my best to have a good accent. me just naturally being identifiably not a native french speaker while speaking french is different than me choosing to not put effort into my accent even though i know better. i feel like monet and bob were thinking about two different things in that moment.

Monet has more experience souround people with different accents, who native tongue is another than English, compared to Bob, who has probably more contact with different American accents of English. In Monets defence, I'm one of those who knows and speaks English, but sometimes I'm too lazy to pronounce some Ts or Ds or when they are soft, or we'll pronounced... I know it all, but sometimes it's just too much effort and I use the accents excuse that I can haha

You're acting like English was the only colonial language. Monet is using SPANISH of all languages to make a point which is ridiculous because Spanish was genocidally forced onto millions of people JUST like English. And a sizable amount of Spanish speakers DO mock other people's accents, even other Spanish speakers if it's deemed low class or something.
