Vulcano (ital. Isola di Vulcano, sits. Vurcanu) is a small volcanic island in Italy, in the Tyrrhenian sea. Located 25 kilometres North of Sicily, is the southernmost of the Aeolian Islands. The island has an area of 21 km2, the height of the island 499 meters. The island is a volcanic massif with several craters, one of which is valid (one of the four active volcanoes in Italy). The last eruption on Vulcano took place in the years 1888-1890.
The island also has fumaroles.
In Greek mythology, the island was the home of the God of the winds Aeolus. The Romans believed that the island serves as a forge of the God Vulcan. Since Roman times the island was a source of building materials - stone and wood on the island was the extraction of sulphur and alum. Until the end of the XIX century the extraction of sulfur was the main occupation of the inhabitants of the island.
The topography of the island complex. The southern part of the island's most sublime. It is located on old cones of stratovolcanoes - Monte Aria (499 metres, the highest point of the island), Monte Saracen (481 m) and Monte Lucia (188 m).
In the Central part of the island rises a volcanic cone fossa, on top of which is a large crater. For the last 6,000 years through a large fossa crater was at least 7 major eruptions, the last was in 1888-1890 year.
In the Northern part of the island is the mountain of Vulcanello (123 m), which is connected with the rest of the island by a narrow isthmus. The isthmus during the storm, taking on water. Of vulcanello emerged as a separate island after the eruption in 183 BC After the eruption of 1553 lava flows with Vulcano formed a narrow isthmus and Vulcanello became a Peninsula.
Currently, the island is inhabited by approx. 500 people. The inhabitants are chiefly occupied in the service of tourists. The island is located just a few minutes by the hydrofoil from the neighbouring island of Lipari, where there are several hotels and cafes.
Vulcano attracts tourists for its beaches, hot springs and sulfur mud baths.
