I love his responses after he asked for your friendship. He says first: „Let us be companions! So long as we do not have to meet often. And you will have to wear a mask.“ If you reject the offer: „Too bad. Please go away.“ And if you agree: „Fantastic. Please go away.“ Also if you denounce him, this is his response: „That’s… that's not very nice of you.“

@@the-reclining-roleplayer I feel bad for the poor swans though, they were probably scared out of their minds getting rounded up like that, and that last one is still trapped having watched the 99 others get away, and still is doomed to the mercy of the player (which given the civ community it's unlikely said player cares about treating animals with kindness nearly as much as domination winning by turning the entire world into irradiated rubble).

He speaks very flowery, over-the-top poetic High German with a slight but noticeable Bavarian tinge to the vowels. It's most prominent when he says "schreiben" (0:32) - that's a rather close [e] sound right there, typical of Southern German.

The claims of insanity around him come from the people who wanted him out, so I don’t think he was INSANE, per se. I truly think he was just a theater kid with a budget. It’s disputed as to whether or not he was genuinely crazy. There was better evidence that his younger brother Otto was crazy, but Ludwig was mainly removed from the throne (and suspected to be assassinated) because he showed no interest in politics or the day-to-day affairs of governing, choosing to spend much of his time building castles and palaces. His uncle agreed to take the throne in his place if Ludwig’s confidants and advisors could prove he was crazy. That’s where it gets sketchy… the doctor that prepared the report on his mental health personally disliked him. There are plenty of reasons to suspect Ludwig II wasn’t actually crazy. Irresponsible and absent from duty? Probably. But maybe not crazy.

He was most likely autistic. He disliked social interactions and had narrow eccentric interests including fairy tales, Wagner, and of course, castles and palaces. But we did not know about autism back then, so madness was just thrown around to explain any mental oddity.

Ludwig II in Civ, is the Good Ruler of Germany, with an emphasis on the Wonders of the World, who was not the Good Ruler, did not rule Germany, and did not build the Wonder of the World.
@Master-Mirror
@Master-Mirror 27 күн бұрын
Not a good ruler? Agreed, he neglected his duties and wasted money on pet projects like building anachronistic castles. Didn't rule over Germany? No, but that's not really a prerequisite to be a civ leader. Eleanor of Aquitaine, Theodora and Gandhi also never reigned over the civs they represent. At least Ludwig actually was king of a part of Germany. As for world wonders, he built Neuschwanstein Castle, which has a strong pop culture presence nowadays. It's kinda weird that they didn't include it as a wonder in the game.

English speakers might not disturb, but for me as a German this „Ludwig“ is absolutely not convincing. He sounds like an exaltet theatre actor from Berlin or Düsseldorf, declaiming classical German poems. But in 19th Century Germany there were strong Dialects, and the nobility was no exception: Bismarck for example spoke a proper High-German. But if you’re familiar with the Accents of Northern Germany, you can hear from his only surviving audio recording that he must have grown somewhere west of Berlin and east of Magdeburg. However, Bavarians are no Prussians. They speak a very, very (!) strong Dialect. Imagine a Queen Victoria, speaking like a Texan or President Lincoln, speaking his words as if he were a sheeper from Wales. I suggest, that would be just as weird as this Ludwig. And if your’re familiar with the political mentality of Bavaria, you would agree with me that they would brought him to the Guillotine for this manner of speaking. 😛 At the Bavarian Carnival they are joking about their Federal Minister - because of his Franconian Dialect (The problem with German humor is that only we understand it). 😅

I knew this kind of comment would come, concerning dialects and accents. I didn't really hear any tapped or trilled r-sounds in any of the audiotracks above. From what I know, that feature remains quite common in Altbayern (Ober- and Niederbayern plus Oberpfalz) and Austrian dialectal regions, even when Standard German is used.

@kulturelleraneignerin358
@kulturelleraneignerin358 7 ай бұрын
@@kerplunk5866 In different German regions, you will find highly divergent political world-views. The most parts of Western Germany (the Old Federal Republic without the former GDR) tend to a liberal or even left-wing view of the things. Bavaria is the big exception. There is a seperate conservative party here (CSU), which forms a union with the christian party (CDU) at federal level, but which is de facto much further in the right. In Bavaria, it is almost a law of power that the local Minister President must be a conservative. The CSU held this office without interruption since 1957. In East Germany (the former GDR), a shift towards conservative or right-wing positions has also taken place in recent years. But this is a new development that has nothing to do with Bavaria's political traditions. While the East Germans see themselves first and foremost as Germans, the Bavarians emphasize their own local culture. With a ironic undertone, they say that they are not actually German. In addition to Lederhosen, Oktoberfest and Catholic faith, their "national consciousness" also includes a strong dialect, closely related to that of the Austrians, to whom they feel a strong affinity. That their current Minister President speaks Franconian dialect rather than Bavarian is therefor a novelty that they make fun of... Fun fact: Everyone thinks it is typically German to wear Lederhosen. In Cologne, Hamburg or Berlin you will never find a person who dresses linke this (except for fun at carnival). It is like thinking it is typical for London to wear kilts. Lederhosen is in Germany a classical symbol with which a Bavarian demonstrates how special he is...

The only notable thing he did was losing to Bismarck and getting Bavaria annexed. Also he probably was murdered by discontent subjects which hated him for using All the money on castles.
@_jpg
@_jpg Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't necessarily say he lost to Bismarck. Besides being defeated in the Austro-Prussian-War of 1866, the peace terms were relatively mild. In 1870/71, he even fought alongside the Prussian dominated North German Confederation against the French and agreed to offer the title of Emperor to Wilhelm I., in exchange for a huge amount of money, so he could pay his debts and build new castles.
