Honestly, the Book Series pretty much mirrors this for the first 4 "books" give or take, so it's possible that they just, you know, adapt the next group of books. We're up to 16 or 17, after all. Fun thing, by the by, is that a lot of these character names are taken from the books, but some of the "humans" were just furry animal people in the books, which gives the series a more realistic feeling to it. I ended up stumbling across book like 10 or so from a book sale at the local library, and then found the first three books in a collection before even watching this masterpiece.

If I were in charge of the sequel I would pull a Sonic Adventure 2 and introduce a new rival person or persons that commit crimes who look similar to the gang, so the media frames them and make it a commentary on how we don't actually want roads of redemption, and seem to grave only executions both real or socially.

As someone who watched Disney's Strange World, I'd personally say even then they failed the assignment. The character design seems to go for a pulp comicky slightly European adventure artstyel; very Asterix or Spirou with round features and big noses. However they still try to mesh it with realistic proportions and realistic Disney movement which just makes all feel sort of uncanny Valley imo.

French animation is great, but I recommend you to also watch Spanish animation, like “Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo”
