Sidney Poitier wasn’t just a talented actor. He was an institution. He helped bring about a more respectable image of black Americans in cinema and television. He also wasn’t afraid to challenge racism through his art - whether it was in the Jim Crow South, apartheid South Africa, or the UK following the end of the British Empire.
His life serves as an inspiration to us all. He was born in Miami but spent much of his formative years in the rural areas of The Bahamas. He returned to Miami in his teens but soon left the South as he refused to put up with the oppressive Jim Crow laws. He was determined to live a life of dignity and respect and wanted to reflect these in his works.
From the get-go, he established himself as a risk taker. In the conservative 1950s, he appeared in the films No Way Out and Cry, The Beloved Country - both films that showcased the horrors of racism. The latter required him to film in apartheid South Africa while fooling the country’s immigration authorities.
In the 1960s, he appeared in films that challenged America’s racial hostility, anti-miscegenation laws, as well as the prejudice faced by immigrants in the UK. This was the decade where he shocked audiences through a tight slap!
He also created opportunities for other black actors and actresses. He directed films that told stories featuring ensembles of talented black entertainers. To this day, many black actors consider him an inspiration to their careers.
Let’s learn about Sidney Poitier’s life and career and his incredible legacy …

Losing Sidney is still a shock and a heartbreak to me and so many. I loved him and his work so much! He was a class act all the way. A patch of blue and To Sir With Love are two of my favourites -- but then I also love Buck And The Preacher, the films he made with Bill Cosby and of course No Way Out. In truth, I love every movie he ever made and so I choose them all.

My favorite movies that he made was Guess who's coming to dinner because of how he stood up to his father and he said you look at me as a black man but I look at myself as a man. I always loved that then my other favorite movies that he has made was the Last Brick maker and the Llife of Noah Dearbern. I think in these two last movies he showed in his personality in the movies the man that he truly was and it's in these two movies that I will remember him. He has a lot of different movies as he was coming up but these two are my best favorite

Sidney said he was hesitant but did go and he & Richard became good friends for the rest of their lives .... God bless RIP Sidney!!!!
