The Siege of Orléans (1428-1429) was the watershed of the Hundred Years' War between France and England. It was the French Royal army's first major military victory while Joan of Arc was with the army and the first to follow the crushing defeat at Agincourt in 1415.[2] The siege took place at the pinnacle of English power during the later stages of the war. The city held strategic and symbolic significance to both sides of the conflict. The consensus among contemporaries was that the English regent, John of Lancaster, would have succeeded in realizing Henry V's dream of conquering all of France if Orléans fell. For half a year the English appeared to be winning but the siege collapsed nine days after Joan's arrival.

There was much more than 4000 vs 500 at Agincourt, more like perhaps 36 000 vs 9000. This movie stinks of modern crap. Joan of Arc, did not decide military tactics, which she had no understanding of, she was afterall a peasent girl, and im not saying that to be condesending. What Joan og Arc was, was a very powerful motivator for the French. The belive in that God was on your side, and a Girl claiming she got signs from god, promising them victory, if truly belived in, which most of them did, since they were very religious in that time, was a extremely effective way to drive your men to victory. Examples of this, was the crusades, when they had taken Antioch, only to be besiged by a large army, and morale dropped. Then a priest claimed to have found a holy relic, and the faith that god was on their side, shot their enthusiasm up to extremes, and they rode out and charged the enemy without hesitation, the enemy was in disbelif and ran.

Wrong. She was in constant consultation with the military command and had a say in military tactics. Several of the campaigns were on her insistence, both those that succeeded such as Orleans and the capture of the keep and those that failed such as the attack on Paris which was effectively not only organised by her but financed and supplied by her as she travelled the country side asking for alms and volunteers, betrayed or at least abandoned by her king. Not to mention both fought in battles and was wounded at least twice. Do not let your pre conceived notions about Hollywood lead your tongue astray about subjects you're obviously not very interested in.

The 1999 film "The Messenger" looks better. By the time Joan appeared on the scene there wasn't a strata of French society that wasn't willing to try a new strategy. Of course, the king and the military elite treated her with a measure of skepticism. However, Joan's impact on the morale of the regular troops was impossible to deny. This excerpt from the tv mini-series gives us a glimpse of the contrast between Joan's religious fervor and the army's more realistic assessment of battle strategy, but it is much more elaborately illustrated in the movie.

The Messengers main flaw which unfortunatly breaks immersion completely is the casting of the by that time world famous 24 year old Milla Jovovich as a 16 year old peasant. This movie is quite bad but atleast Leelee Sobieski matched the real Joan in age being 16-17 when it was filmed.

0:20 it's funny because Joan actually wanted to attack the english castle at once, while their captains insist on taking the food and supplies first to Orleans, which they did and Joan was furious at them, the actual entrance and assault was done days later in better situation. Thankfully they constantly override her "tactic" decitions. Movies changing the history for the sake of audience.

Most of the time when infantry lines actually met each other it didn't turn into a massive melee like you see in most movies. It was usually just groups of men all moving in one direction and battering anything in their path aside. Basically if someone was standing next to you and facing in the same direction as you, then they were likely on your side. In the late middle ages you get the evolution of symbolism like the St George cross for the English, although that didn't really start until after Agincourt.

As a military officer it wouldn’t make sense for her to have children and I doubt that she wanted to be a mother anyway…she probably felt very honored to be able to fight life her country like men of her time were allowed to…. I also appreciate in this particular version of Joan of Arc she doesn’t appear to be a stupid little girl but understands if violent conflict can be avoided it should and is well aware war has atrocities but is brave enough and loves her suffering people enough to go to war

I dont get it. If you have a bombard/mortal why not keep shooting until you either runout of gunpowder/cannonalls or the thing breaks. Why just fire one shot? Why use mounted knights in a siege. It is not like horses scale ladders or stairs. Horses make ideal big soft targets. Why do 10% of men use shields. And half of the men using shield hold it up in the wrong direction. It is not like archers are the biggest threat to you men or something. Why are there men at arms standing at the base of the wall. Totally negating what walls are made for. 23:30 medic! 28:42 actually I'm gay. Thumbs up. It was entertaining enough.

It's a myth. The king of England was an ethnic French too. He would have united France with England and moved his throne to Paris, making France a stronger nation. It was more like a civil war.The English were merely peasants fighting for a French nobility. It was a dynastic war. A lot of French provinces were allied to the Plantagenets. Plus Anjou not England was the ancestral land of the Plantagenets. This is why their empire is called the Angevin (or Anjou) empire.

Though i also think the American accents are silly, you can't truly expect everyone in historical movies to speak the original languages. Do you watch a biblical movie and expect them to speak hebrew? Do you watch a movie about the Romans and expect them to speak Latin? Though this is French history, this isn't a French production, and if they had a French actress speaking English, people would complain about the accent being silly or something like that. There's plenty of things to complain about in this clip, and i think their accents are the least important problem.

In reality she never came up with battlefield tactics and never fought personally in combat. She wasn’t some “great military mind of the time like this movie portrays her” she was more of a symbol she inspired the french to fight and that’s why she’s considered a hero

If she was never been in a battlefield, why and how she was captured ?
@jesterofspades3903

@@franckdebzh7608 because a group of Burgundian scouts captured her outside the town of compiegne, she wasn’t captured in battle. She was captured because she was still a leader of the french army and the Burgundians tried to ransom her (because her ransom was a lot) but the french never paid it.

They marched with 4000 strong vs 500 and lost, and he wants us to feel sorry for them? Their intentions were clearly to do the same to the others what happened to them. It is just more embarrassing that they were beaten than anything else, can't try to elicit compassion when they had such a clear advantage and failed lmao, hard to feel sorry for them lmao

You do know that the English murdered a lot of their prisoners of war at agincourt? They thought that the French would attack from behind and didn't have enough guards, so they just murdered them, wich was, even in that dark time, considered a great crime.

@@SerBallister Don't get me wrong here, please. I'm on neither side here, just wanted to explain why there was the call "revenge for Agincourt", that is was not just because the French lost a battle. I think in every war there are crimes comitted by all sides taking part.
@SerBallister
@SerBallister 4 жыл бұрын
@@bjornwilding2082 At Agincourt the French signalled clearly they will be taking no prisoners, they had every intention of massacring every last English person there so it's unsurprising that the opposing side decided to do the same. It was also uncommon for smaller forces to take prisoners during battles as it takes man power you don't have to look after them. If you weren't a noble back then the chances of your being looked after by the enemy are slim to none.

@@SerBallister you are absolutely right here, noone would care for peasants. You can't sell them. I was speaking of the noble ones. I don't know about Signals the French did, I only know that even the english chronists were shocked after the Events. Plus I want to point out that I dislike this movie for portraiing the English as onedimensional evil morons. No words of the French plundering their own people in english territory
