The Siege of Trebizond is one of the most famous and consequential battles in medieval military history. In March 1461, Mehmed II, the Ottoman sultan, laid siege to the city of Trebizond, an important Byzantine trading city on the eastern coast of Turkey. The city soon fell, and Trebizond became the last Byzantine outpost in Anatolia. This video tells the story of the siege from the perspective of two of its most important participants: Mehmed II and David Megas Komnenos, the Byzantine emperor.

The siege did not include a violent conquest of the city as in the case of Istanbul. The city was surrounded for a few months, with a few unsuccessful attempts to break the walls, but eventually a peaceful settlement was negotiated. The elite was deported to Istanbul (today's wealthy Beyoglu area), while most of the local people were allowed to remain. Christianity would remain the majority religion in the city for another two centuries. Even though the Greek Orthodox were eventually exchanged with Greece, Trabzon remains a multicultural cosmopolitan city. But it has not been given the development opportunities that some other Turkish coastal cities in the west have had, such as a railway connection or local light rail. Even decent roads are only relatively recent in the area.
