Vraks is a pretty massive chunk of the imperium's immediate stockpile in the sector, which has the eye of terror very close to it so its pretty much the second most important area to hold. The troops they could kill right there on the ground would be offset by everyone in Cadia having to pull out a calculator before they shoot.

While we know IG Lord Commanders (and Lord Admirals) can declare Exterminatus, even SM Chapter Masters can, you'd have to petition the Ordo Excorium for the means to, and typically Exterminatus, contrary to popular belief, is not something taken lightly. The Imperium does NOT blow up planets for minor grievances. It's only when the planet is irreversibly and catastrophically lost that it becomes necessary. As bad as Vraks was, it was not nearly bad enough to justify destroying the planet. There are also other practical considerations as well, as Exterminatus (even without the gigantic, world destroying bombs that can be used, that are not given out to the imperial navy under normal circumstances, meaning you'd probably need to ask an Inquisitor for the more exotic means) without specialized munitions can be something that requires a significant logistical undertaking to properly accomplish. Many ships at once, possibly hundreds (or perhaps a hundred, it's not entirely clear), firing a huge amount of firepower all at once would be very hard to organize and coordinate. It would take time. Time that could be better spent trying a conventional (by imperial standards) conflict on the planet that isn't yet irreversibly lost.

There’s probably at least one soldier that survived their initial front line assignments and got promoted to a logistics role only for their regiments combat elements to be wiped out in a wider offensive. A “protected” position followed by a significant time waiting for the regiment to reconstitute while maybe doing odd jobs on the supply network probably means you could survive for more than a few years despite being a Krieger on Vraks.This also comes with the caveat that survivors are going to be given a command role in the newly rebuilt regiment and that’s basically a death sentence because the death korps expects commanders to be front and centre of the most critical and lethal offensive’s. Basically a Death Korp general is luckier than the Master Chief but they won’t ever try to quit while they are ahead and will just keep rolling the dice till they get all ones. So no, there were probably no Kriegers who survived the entire duration of the campaign if their unit was on the ground for the whole conflict. Also if you were a Krieger on Vraks why would you be worried about survival? The Kriegers want to die for the Emperor, a survivor of such a lethal conflict is surely a failure who had the opportunity to atone but ran to preserve their own life instead.

By all other guard standards, that's one incredibly lucky soldier. Any good Krieger that survived that long, however, would consider it the very height of BAD luck.

The helmet is French, the putties are british/american, the uniform itself is more German/French, the name is german, and the tactics take from the stereotypical ww1 western front idea; with some of the more advanced ones like bite and hold being seen in some of the novels (a nominally british tactic at inception).

Scale is always the problem. Units are given at ridiculous numbers, yet commanded personally by a colonel, 3 lieutenants and 6 sergeants. World's that are so deadly any population would have a negative pop. growth can field near infinite armies. And when they create a truly horrific, genocidal war on a scale that surpasses most real world wars in length they fail by giving casualty numbers that are smaller than real world numbers.

Science fiction in general is notorious for its writers having no sense of scale. Arch included some of his notes at the end of his series on Vraks, and mentioned that he'd had to massage some of the numbers to get them to remain consistent across the whole story, like a company of Death Riders losing thousands of men in taking a hill during a reference to The Charge of the Light Brigade, or warships getting into fights at ranges anywhere from "visual with the naked eye" to "multiple light-seconds". Oh well, at least it's better than the Clone Wars, where the Grand Army of the Republic, built to fight hundreds of major battles across the entire galaxy simultaneously, would at peak manpower be considered one of the mid-sized participants in WW2.

Also in the StarWars Universe, space battles are more important, if you have control of the space surrounding the planet you basically control the planet, so the need for ground forces is not as important. Also WW2 was fought on a large front spanning hundreds of miles. Thats not how most battles work in StarWars. Usually battles are fought over one important place on the planet. For example the battle of genosis the clone army did not have to take over the entire planet just the droid factories. Another thing, WW2 was fought with relatively simple technology, compared to StarWars. And they had Jedi too. 1 jedi is worth something like 100 clones and there were like 100s of jedis. But yeah I agree in general 6.2 million is nothing for an entire galaxy. A more reasonable number would be something like 100 million.@@tba113

They are both based on the Siege of Vraks book Series. Arch however has admitted at the start of his own series that he took some creative liberties while creating his series on that story, especially with the numbers of Troops involved.

What you expect? The Death Korps is sacrificial not suicidal. The Death Korps will spend their lives if means taking back or destroying whatever needs taking back or destroyed. But will not blindly suicidally charge at enemy fortifications, defenses,or combat lines unless it has tactical value. They will instead if it has no tactical value use bombardment from either their ground artillery and long range fire from heavy weaponry and snipers are used by Death Korps infantry. If needed arieal or orbital bombardment is used but is rare due to Naval Aristocracy incompetence.
