This movie missed the point. People like Veronica more than Sierra

The most popular girl in my high school class was less attractive than this, but she was abso-fuckin-lutely hilarious, and had a penchant for writing Disney parody songs. Like, literally, she won prom queen by a landslide. Personality actually does matter more than looks, even in high school.

She’s a teenage girl with ginger hair, okay weight, and has no acne, and she’s calling herself ugly. ok

Pretty ironic tho. Veronica went from unlikeable to likeable and Sierra the total opposite

The most unrealistic part about this movie was the scene in band class where they had a full conversation during the song.

I’m curious about how the main actress is doing mentally since she’s been purposely cast as “the ugly girl” for multiple things now. This show, Ethel in Riverdale. Even though she’s perfectly fine looking, that’s gotta be bad for the self-esteem.

why does the “mean girl” has a greater character development than the main character

This whole movie is just defending and glorifying catfishing. Like wtf.

Dumplin is a much sweeter and better movie with a plus size girl falling in love with a skinny boy. The romance is not the main part of the story, it follows her becoming a better and more confident person, and she doesn’t date him until she figures herself out. He loves her and she doesn’t have to trick him, lose weight or completely change her personality for him to do it. It’s still kind of cheesy and the movie is not as a good as the book but it’s awesome!

If the genders were reversed, I guarantee you that it would've received severe backlash for promoting psychological manipulation and sexual assault.

It's ironic that it's easier to sympathize with the mean girl, who goes through actual character development, more so than the real main character.

She’s an actual psychopath, she thinks that people owe her things just because she doesn’t feel good about herself. She sexually assaulted Jamie but because of the disregard for men being sexually assaulted, it doesn’t seem that he knows that kiss was assault

Sierra is not even unattractive at all. I knew plenty of girls in my high school who were way less attractive than that and they were popular and got many dates. Is this what you call “Hollywood unattractive?” Also, I hate it when movies portray marching band members who get good grades as the “losers”. As far as I’m concerned, being musically talented and doing well in school aren’t bad things, and I never knew anyone who was bullied for that. In fact, they were considered very popular and treated with respect. This trend has been around since like the 1980s, it needs to stop

The ironic thing about these kind of movies is they do more damage than good. They cast people that aren’t bad looking and spend the whole movie telling you that person is ugly, while the audience is like if that persons ugly, what am I.

Sierra had the potential to be a really relatable character for teenage girls who feel like they don't fit the beauty standard but they fumbled it so, so bad

As a fat girl who struggled with her self-image all throughout high school.... I absolutely despised this movie. I was so excited to see something interesting, and when the trailer came out I assumed it was going to be fixed halfway through the movie. But the fact that she constantly does shitty and unfair things throughout the whole movie and then gets a happy ending? Sierra isn't deserving of that guy, in fact, Veronica is!!! There's literally a whole show about cat fishing, and they thought this was a good idea?!?! Seeing her blame her appearance for acting out was frustrating especially, because she isn't even ugly. She's just fat. She prided herself on being okay with her appearance that she never took a look at her personality, which was the truly ugly part about her.

‘I’m a terrible and ugly person’ and spends the rest of the movie proving it. Good job, I guess?

That movie proofed that just because your conventionally unattractive doesn't means you're a good person. For years movies have shown the pretty girl to be mean and the "ugly" girl to be nice and kind. That movie was trash and Sierra isn't just a loser. She's a catfish and manipulater and basically assaulted that boy who thought he was kissing someone else. But I'm also glad that this movie showed that "ugly" people can be mean and do vile things.

The sad part is that the mean girl has an infinitely more interesting character arc, she's a surprisingly talented actor, she's got charisma. Honestly, the editing is pretty good, the cinematography is fine and it seems like the directing was pretty damn good. The writing is just awful which is such a shame because it looks like a lot of people took this movie seriously and they genuinely put in the effort. So sad

People are focussing on her appearance. That has nothing to do with it. She was just an absolutely terrible human being. She hated herself because she used her appearances as an excuse for why no one liked her. She never took into account that her personality was awful.

I can't believe she had the audacity to compare herself to Quasimodo. That character was severely disabled and deformed. Both of which were conditions he had no control over. Sierra Burgess is a little bit on the chubby side. That's not the same as being a half-blind, bow-legged hunchback! 😤

This movie looks like a wattpad story written by a 17-year-old.

This movie shouldn't be about a "ugly" girl, it should be about a bully becoming a better person after being around someone ten times worse. I am ashamed I actually watched this.

it’s ironic how her message was that people shouldn’t judge her because of her looks... and then only liked this guy because of his looks

3:42 a better comeback to the “Move it Frodo.” Would have been something like “Sure, Golem.” Her comeback made her seem pretentious while something quick and witty with her leaving would have shown that she doesn’t care what those girls think of her and that she doesn’t feel the need to look good for them, and that she is self assured in herself without their opinion. Just little details like that could have made her a more likeable protagonist (as well as changing major story plots that make her a terrible person)

I agree about the Veronica part. She was a “mean girl” but ended up maturing and standing up for herself. Sierra was like woe is me I’m not conventionally attractive so she catfishes and wins?!

Honestly, though, I feel like this would have been a fine movie if you just removed the love interest and made it about an overweight girl learning to feel confident in herself and a bully learning to be a better person. Setup: They get assigned to work together on a group project. The plus-sized girl, who never bothered to take care of or try on her appearance learns how to style her hair, wear more flattering clothing, and the such to make herself look more confident and therefore attractive from the bully girl. The bully girl learns how to show more empathy, kindness, and be more confident in her personality and intelligence from the plus-sized girl. She learns that she's more than just her looks, and that she doesn't have to be flawless all the time. It's a cliche plot, but who doesn't love a campy movie every once in awhile? Plus, it's infinitely better than what the actual movie was about.

It literally should have revolved around Veronica because holy crap she was the most interesting and 3 dimensional character in this dam movie

The most unrealistic part of this movie is during the band rehearsal scene when Sierra is talking with her best friend, and the band director doesn't stop everyone and get on her for not paying attention.

Sierra's not even ugly. She has the sort of aw-she's-so-soft-and-squishy! kind of cuteness. There's no reason for her to complain.

Between this and that Kissing Booth thing and the other one which i could not tell you the name of but I think it's based on fanfiction, it seems there was a period of time around 2018 where we were just bombarded with movies about high schoolers violating each other's privacy and consent and deceiving each other being painted as "romantic".

As a teenager, I can confirm we are all dickheads.

For the weight and appearance there's both sides to the coin. I was overweight and didn't partake in make-up or skin care routines growing up because my parents didn't really necessarily think it was important other than just raising me. This took me forever to break bad habits and become accustomed to what I should have done while younger. When I was independent and set on being healthy I disciplined my will-power and performed the research to adjust to the diet and exercise. This is the part where the responsibility ultimately fell on me. Perhaps Sierra's parents don't care to bother with her health and allow whatever she eats or doe's and finds no concern in it. They're just maybe spoiling her to. But that doesn't stop Sierra from utilizing internet and books to educate herself and seeing a nutritionist or partaking sports regularly. I though at that age is was out of reach to ever look any different than unappealing and just didn't really try as well as know where to start. Maybe that emotional scene could provoke her mother to encourage change to lose weight effectively, have a little style, than her usual hair and clothing choices to see something new she can explore that will totally be her. If not her parents Sierra has modern solutions to make a change, but the whole movie is really just her bumming around and accepting she's not pretty at all. This was me and I wish I could go back knowing what I know now, but maybe it's just maturity that helped me to change and growing older.

Making fun of the character for her duplicity and shirt-sightedness is one thing, but do you actually think it's funny to constantly shit on her weight? Like, it's honestly more obnoxious than anything in the film.

Not only are Sierra’s parents slim and somewhat attractive, but they’re played by Alan Ruck and Lea Thompson, both of whom are most well known for their roles in two popular 1980s teen films: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Back to the Future

I wish I WISH it ended with her getting rejected, I wish he said “you know, you’re actually my type. But you lied, manipulated and embarrassed me and I will not forgive you for that.” That would’ve sent a better message, don’t manipulate someone to get in their pants ESPECIALLY if you haven’t even spoken to them before and don’t even know that they’ll be repulsed by you like you seem to think is the case.

A more accurate title for this movie would be, Sierra Burgess is a criminal

this review popped up randomly in my recommended. i’ve never liked this movie, and this vid was very interesting, engaging, and true as hell. but honestly, all the little fat shaming comments were just unnecessary. i know you put that disclaimer in at the beginning saying you’re attacking shannon purser’s ‘character’ but you’re literally attacking her as an actress too. i wouldn’t enjoyed this a whole lot more without those unnecessary digs.

I actually really like the character arc they gave Veronica. This movie should have really been about her and how, as a bully, developes to be a three dimensional well developed character. It really breaks apart the mean bitch trope every teen movie throws in there.

Things could’ve gone really well for her if she had just told him who she was when he asked if she was Veronica. Jamie clearly doesn’t care that much about looks, so this could’ve worked out so well for her.

Honestly, if you change the sexual assault scene to make Sierra pushing Veronica out of the way, and alter the ending, you could easily make Veronica the main character.

That whole "Oh I am a insecure teenage girl" thing came out of nowhere. During the whole film she did not display a single insecurity. That whole scene in the beginning with her mom and the toothpaste on her mouth made me think she did not care about her appearance. When Veronica would talk bad about her she came back with witty comebacks showed that she was not docile or someone that will be stepped on.

Someone needs to stop making movies about stories they found on wattpad

Are you sure we aren’t supposed to be rooting for Veronica? She’s the one who has shown any reason for sympathy. Yeah she is somewhat of a bully, but I can understand cruelty due to a bad home life. Not just being cruel and expecting sympathy still
