On April 28, 1963, KQED, a local San Francisco television and radio station, sponsored a trip on the Sierra Railroad from Oakdale to Tuolumne behind 1922 Baldwin 2-8-0 number 28. These 16mm black and while sound films are outtakes from a KQED camera crew that was out filming the train that day. Additionally, silent sequences were on the reel as B roll, helping round out the trip and the experience that was had on that day in the Spring of 1963.

That was fun! Thanks for digging this one up. Even caught sight of a VW Microbus! The sound was great, too. It caught the engineer having some slip issues! I love that whistle!

It’s an amazing locomotive and it’s great that she’s now back in service thanks to a slow but steady rebuild I think she will be in operation this fall I find it interesting back then her Bell was energized nowadays it is manual with the assistance of a pneumatic bell ringer rod

A special engine for me, one of the few "real" steam locomotives I have ever ridden behind. My first ride was back in 1979. Thank you for the post!

Outstanding. Have been on the tourist railroad operation out of Jamestown; an 'experience' but rather short by distance. The roundhouse is a great tour. 'Tis a pity how much of the extensive rail network in that region has had the tracks pulled and various rights of way abandoned. "Once gone, they NEVER come back." Driving the car between Jamestown and Sonora upon seeing the remaining track unused, it calls to mind 'wishes' for it to come back. . . . TMI: Another time, what a thrill to see and explore the EXTENSIVE, trackside, "Back to the Future, Part III" western town set shortly before the tragic 1996 inferno nuked it. Technical feedback comment. The original sound is indeed a bonus. . . . Since the 16 mm film's aspect ratio was 4x3, what, pray tell, was the motivating factor to artificially transform this into a semi widescreen version? We miss portions of the image that's cut off to fit the revised format when that occurs. Sigh. You know what? You could provide BOTH versions! Thanks much, Hunter Lohse.What a fun ride!

Two giant black bars on the sides of the image when blown up onto the TV gets old and annoying, professional filmmakers blow films up to 16:9 all time, love it or hate it, it’s a common industry practice

The track between Jamestown and Sonora is very much in use by the Sierra Northern Railway, the freight rail company wholly owned by Sierra Railroad Co.
