The way I always put the keepers in was to put a dab of bearing grease on the inside of the keeper, then use a weak magnet to put the keepers in place. A weak magnet is usually not strong enough to overcome the “suction” effect from the grease. Has always worked very well for me.

Something an airplane mechanic told me about to keep from dropping valves is to use soft nylon rope in the cylinder and bring the piston up against the rope which will hold the valve in place. It eliminates the possibility of losing air pressure and dropping the valve into the cylinder. The only downside you have to turn the engine backwards a little to get the rope out. Just something to think about.
@AT-wl9yq

Most vehicles now come with some type of VVT system. If you turn the motor backwards, you can damage the actuators.

Hi Kenny Great job on replacing the valve spring. Another way to hold the valve up without air pressure is to; remove the appropriate spark plug, get the piston on the cylinder needing the new spring coming up on the compression stroke, put about a foot of rope into the spark plug hole, turn the engine by hand until the piston compresses the rope against the valves, replace the spring, reverse the engine by hand just enough to take the rope out of the cylinder. I have done this several times over the years, and if the rope gets sheared/left in the cylinder you can reach thru the spark plug hole with one of those flexible metal grabber tools… Keep up the great informative and entertaining videos…

While working on my GW the person doing the video suggested putting a rag into the opening surrounding the nut to help prevent the nut from disappearing down into the fairing. Saved a lot of time as I have had the nut slip out of my grip twice while removing it. I wonder if that might prevent the valve keepers from getting lost in the engine when taking them out. I like the grease tip. I will use that in the future.

Friend had a 66 427/390 Corvette with a radially cracked valve spring form new. Took over 15,000 miles for and dozens of dealer trips for the problem to be found. Once had the keeper on a Chevy 350 jump off and fall into the left fender. Took fender off and shook it upside down to get the keeper out. I've got a Jeep Commander with Hemi burning oil with a supposedly rebuilt engine (bought it that way - VERY cheap). May be valve stem seals, but just getting the valve covers off of a Hemi can be a real bear. Left side has so much electrical stuff in the way that it's nearly impossible.

As an old motorcycle mechanic, who has fit collets more times that I can count, we used to use a long flat blade screwdriver with a dab of heavy grease on the blade. The grease keeps the collet on the blade tip just enough so this it does not drop off but it will break free with ease once the collet is in place.
