In this first video, I introduce you to my 'Church House' in Niezijl (NL) and explain the philosophy behind my teaching. We also make a start with harmonizing: the I-IV-V system, that could be the start of organ playing for children as well.

I am quite envious of you for being able to buy a church and have not just one, but several actual organs in it as well as lots of other musical instruments, all for your own personal use. Thank you for this video series.

What a breath of fresh air! I have long believed that the "see ink blob - put down certain fingers" was the wrong approach to teaching music. I taught instrumental music in public schools for many years and found it more effective to introduce musical concepts, including creating your own melodies, first and keeping notation for later. I wanted my pupils to understand that ink blobs were simply a way to send someone a letter about their music. Ink blobs are never music in and of themselves.

I can’t believe I am watching this! For so long I can only heard master ‘s improvisation but never have the Chance to hear his explanation on improvisation(perhaps he did it in Dutch?) now today I have this honor to see his church base, all these different instruments and most importantly his introduction on improvisation! I am so glad that Score dependent hobbiest like me can start to play something by heart! I tried the triad chord method immediately on my personal favorite tune “nun komm der Heiden hailand” , I love it so much! Thank you sir! Please keep putting more of these videos!

Thank you Maestro - that was a revelation and it supports a gut feeling I had from an early age but which was, unfortunately, supresed by well-meaning parents and music teachers who wanted me to "learn music" first and not commit the crime of playing by ear.

Hello. I think Sietze would approve of a book called 'Sketching at the Keyboard' by Laura Campbell for teaching students. It uses simple children's songs & folk songs. First the student creates simple interest with register changes, then doubling in octaves with register changes, then harmonizing with tonic 5ths in left hand (rhythmically, drone like), then tonic & dominant 5ths, then subdominant, and so on, then these while doubling melody with 3rds & 6ths with right hand forming chords contrapuntally. This teaches the 'hollow' sound of parallel 5ths before they would be traditionally 'forbidden' (without an understanding of why they can undermine individuality of parts). There are two other supplimentary books 'Sketches for Improvisation', 'Further Sketches for Improvisation'.

I'm exactly in the situation that you describe, having beeing taught with scores only as a child. Thanks a lot for this lesson. It contains enough practise for a full week of discovery on the keyboard. Now, let's have fun !

What happened to the little organ that stood in the corner where the Scottish chamber organ is now? You have a lovely room and collection of instruments. Sietze, and your improvisations are such an inspiration. Thank you for this very interesting video!
