The stick swingings are actually signals to the cymbals, gong and lion on what the next set of drum beats are, just in case you don't know that.

Wow, excellent! I always love hok san (sar ping) style drumming.I've learn my drum from teacher chen shaoqi (master siow's sifu) and though i'm no longer with his troupe, i' always like his drumming and always respect my teacher

keep it closed. it depends on how big your drum is. We have a pretty big drum so about 5 sheets of news paper and if it still doesnt sound right, we add more. Just keep an eye on it.

You can learn Sar Ping style lion dance in Kuching, Limbang and Sabah.

Seems to happen to all troupes around the world I think. It's very hard to be 100% when you are out performing whole day with no breaks.

Chinese Masonic Society (Melbourne) will release a version of their own Fut San drumming sometime this year, stay tune.

this is so dope. So I'm always hearing the typical Fat San Lion Dance Drumming. Is that just as elaborate? I seem to see a simplified version. I'm self taught so its just a mish mash. This seems very traditional with proper technique. Never boring too.

Hey. I have a drum that is loose and cold. The beats sound a little off. Have any tips? I found a tip saying to put it in the sun for 2 days. If it works, I have a question. If you put it out for 2 days, do you leave it overnight, or, leave it in the sun then bring it back in and bring it back out tommorow. Reply back. PLEASE.

@NumaLaw is he a master? or do his hands go in crazy directions that affect the tone of his beats that make him look like he;s amazing. The thing with Hok San Drumming is that it is the same thing over and over again. it gets boring after about 30 seconds. and by no means an i a master. i'm only 15.

There are 18 different sections there(& that is only the official ones), if that's 'all they got' I wonder if you can educate me on any other styles that has more.

burn some news paper and put it underneath the drum, my groups has a couple of old drums and thats what we do to tighten them up. Burn it until the sound of the drum is good. its loose because of the moisture.

i've been telling my team that we needed to work on our drums. So far it's just a bunch of mixed beats put together, and whenever we do something we hit the sides 3x...lame. But hey, it's because we have a lazy ass drummer that's cocky and feels that he needs no improvement. i love those types.
