In this video we take a brief look at "The Flying General" Lü Bu, the man, the myth, and the legends about him, and the actual weapon he may have used as compared to what we see in popular media and stories. We'll also talk about the Ji halberd of Han Dynasty China, it's departure from the bronze age Ge, and even cover some useful techniques with the pole arm halberd.

I thought the story of Lu Bu fighting Guan Yu, LIu Bei, and ZHang Fei was only in the 14th century historical-fiction novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and was not in the historical texts (eg. Records of the Three Kingdoms, Annotations to Records of the Three Kingdoms, etc) that dates closer to the timeperiod? Or was the story in both the novel and in the historical records?

I have the Library of Classics version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and if I recall that particular battle at Hu Lao Gate involved Hua Xiong and Sun Jian's forces. In the novel the Three Brothers swoop in to make the save, but historically Sun Jian's forces managed the win. Most of the duels in the story are likely apocryphal.

@@garagon31 Yeh, I know it's in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (the novel). I'm asking about the Records of the Three Kingdoms (the historical text). Or by "novel" do you actually mean the records?
@garagon31
@garagon31 2 жыл бұрын
@@Intranetusa I should have clarified. The Library of Classics is a government sponsored academic work to translate Chinese classics into modern Pinyin and non-mandarin languages, and each book comes fully annotated. In the case of RotK the annotations frequently have historical accounts of the battles and characters.

@@garagon31 I see, so it basically has the historical records version of the story along side the historical-fiction version of the story in the Romance novel? That is very interesting.

Thanks a lot for this video! There is some special grim beauty in how ingenious and brutal ji is, isn't it. It just feels so real and purposeful. I wouldn't even dream of seeing it any kind of action, it being such an old and not exactly well-known weapon, and here you are with such a treat.

Wow, cool video. Your Choy Li Fut works well with the Ji. It's a stroke of genius that LK Chen is reproducing these ancient weapons. A great smith with great ideas. I like this weapon, but the fact that it is tied to the shaft is a weakness in my opinion. If you blocked another weapon and it cut the cords, the Ji blade would come loose. I suspect that is one reason it was superceded by the Sha and the Qiang by the end of the Han.

With the parallel point sharpened as well as the perpendicular one, I imagine this weapon might have a lethal backswing if you miss the peck. Someone dodges out of the way of the point coming down, only to be caught by the long blade coming back up.

The weapon is sharpened down the side opposite to the pecking blade - one thing that comes to mind with the Ji (as opposed to combination spear and ge) is: can that other side be used effectively for chopping attacks? It looks like it could be used for an effective chopping attack
@SifuKuttel
@SifuKuttel Жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely. The only drawback is that it has some slack to move because of how it is tied on. A channel may have been carved into the pole to further secure the blade, but even then the chop has a limit once it hits the pole.

There could have been some finely crafted work from the Zhou to the Qi Dynasty or an older era. There had to be at least a rare case of gathering or using iron during the late Bronze Age. Some beyond average artists or crafters who were ahead of their time could have gotten creative. Making polearms or swords that would not be rivaled or recreated until the Song dynasty? Dong Zhou could have had access to well pressured treasures and relics before giving some of them to Lu Bu as a gift?

@Sifu Kuttel, I have been meaning to make a wooden or plastic Ji head myself. How did you go about making your own? What kind of wood and tools did you use?
@SifuKuttel
@SifuKuttel 2 жыл бұрын
I used beech wood strips and then cut them to shape. I ended up drilling and pinning them together with two dowels and wood glue. Besides the drill, I only used hand tools to cut and shape the wood. They hold together pretty well for light sparring, but I doubt they could handle full combat force. That would require a single piece rather than two pinned together.

I think the pulling back ("Sheer" or how do you spell that? Never heard the term) would still be quite effective and not require that much more skill, as you'd have more resistance targetting a human body rather than a water bottle.
@SifuKuttel
@SifuKuttel 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is definitely effective, but I would place it as secondary to pecking and spearing because of how quick those attacks can recover as compared to hooking and shearing.
@darrylviljoen6227
@darrylviljoen6227 2 жыл бұрын
@@SifuKuttel Actually, I think that might not be completely accurate. I feel the pecking would be the least used option (the push cut just beating it, though they would be incidental strikes), at least for most users, for peasant militia for example. I saw a video by a youtuber, lindebeige, an archaeologist by profession, did a long musing on why he thinks some halberds have axe heads at an angle to the shaft rather than parallel. His thoughts are that it was to allow them to perform draw cut like the Ge and that they would use it as a return strike if they missed with the spear thrust. It would be effective in massed ranks and would be very easy to drill into untrained recruits. I also found a documentary on the Ge and the war chariot were they did some (mostly theatrical) tests with a bronze headed Ge. The pecks did very well, unsurprisingly, given the leverage of polearms. The push cuts were not very effective. But the draw cut was very effective, which makes sense to me biomechanically, as you can "sit" into the cut in a way you just can't with a push cut. Just my thoughts. Thanks for video, there just aren't any videos on the Ge or Ji ( the dagger-axe version). This is it really. The video is great, informative and practical with clear demonstrations, it was exactly what I was after. They are such fascinating and little know weapons. Pretty please make more videos about it, forms, techniques and maybe some light sparring.

I believe it is beechwood, but that’s only because it is most commonly available for me. It definitely cannot handle full power impact because of the pins, it’ll either pop out of the hole or tear out of the side… so I only do light/med sparring with it.
