Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Today we are taking a look at a SIG 550-1 Sniper model. This is mechanically a SIG 550, aka Sturmgewehr 90, but made to a very high level of quality control and fitted with a number of elements suitable for a marksman's rifle. It has a long (25.6 inch / 650mm) and heavy barrel, a thoroughly;y adjustable folding stock, a nice bipod, a Hensoldt scope, and a redesigned match trigger.
The rifle was originally designed at the request of the Swiss police, not the military. It met their requirements quite well, but only got one other significant order (the Jordanian Royal Guard). The problem was that it was chambered for the 5.56 x 45mm cartridge, and was extremely expensive. Most police and security potential purchasers preferred a rifle in a heavier caliber, typically 7.62mm NATO. Well, for the same weight and price as the 550-1 Sniper you could get a rifle like an H&K PSG-1, which offered all the qualities of the SIG but with a larger cartridge.

@@T_D_B_ Expensive? Very much Overly Complex? It's basically a very accurate SVD chambered in .556, even the trigger design is pretty simple and the gun requires no speciality tools to dissasemble compared to a standard 550. Unlike the PSG-1 that requires you to ship the gun back to Germany to get serviced.

The WBY round from an over the counter Sako will do 1.4" at that range. With better glass. To the marksman's rifle.Mine is an ugly ,heavy ,Spring Field Armory national match M-1A1 w/ a stainless barrel that shoots the same group sizes as the Sako. Day in and day out with assorted fodder. Is it a marksman's rifle ?An aside, I love my fal carbine . If I close the barn door ,and shoot from the inside of same . I can hit the barn. To much blast and recoil for what it is. Kind of like the Delta Elite in 10mm . Should have went w/ a 7.62x39 in this configuration. Sold the 10. Still have and carry often a .45 cal 1911. When , not out doors. I was thinking that for the very niche role the PSG-1 and 550-1 Sniper were developed for, being hyper accurate police sniper's rifle, 5.56 would offer a lot of benefits to placing a very accurate round in a hostage situation. Less recoil, smaller bullet, ability to attach magazines for quick reloads while set up prone, etc.

the GSG9 actually used regular SG550 with ACOGS for close range sniping/marksman role and obviously the PSG-1 for longer ranges.

Couple of mistakes - the 1989 import ban didn't stop the import of these rifles (or similar types, like the PSG-1), you could still import them if you pinned the stock as they are suitable "for sporting purposes". It was the 1998 ban on the import of rifles that use LCMMs that banned them from import. Also, the piece of metal where the front sight would be is the latch for the mirage band.

What set this rifle apart from other versions of "sniper rifles" was it's myriad adjustment abilities. Even the scope mount allowed adjustment to fit the individual firing it. The expense that SIG Neuhausen spent refining the standard 550/Stgw90 into this rifle was amazing. It was nothing less than the US Army spent converting its stock of M14's into National Match competition grade rifles. Possibly double that expense.

Very rare and very expensive in canada. Lucky enough to try it, a random owner in my gun range was kind enough to offer to let me try. Super super light trigger.

Actually got my hands on 1 of the few us imports once. Have owned 2 pre ban 550 over the years. 1 sniper sold in the us in 2009 for 18k$. Private sale.

That barrel and bipod if installed on a standard receiver and combined with a larger magazine would have made for the ideal light support weapon. Not a replacement for the 'LMG' but a halfway weapon for special operations.

At $10,000 per copy (in 1989 dollars), I'm not surprised they didn't sell very well. Considering it's in the 5.56 caliber, and the fact that the Accuracy International AX308 is half the price (in 2020 dollars), it seems this rifle fills only the "deep pocket'd collector" niche.

How come you spent new year's eve in Switzerland? For next time - please check out the Wyssen-Defence Kit to transform the K31 into a proper sniper rifle. And while you're at consider to give the Hubertec muzzle brake a shot, too.
