We can't teach anything in isolation, not even something as straightforward as memorizing sight words. Always, the learner is building upon what they already know (pre-existing knowledge) and putting that into context.
And, when we rely on their knowledge base, we can help them build their self confidence. Sounding out sight words phonetically is one example of how we can do this.
Yes, it's super funny to try and sound out words like two and night and was. But, that's not the only reason we do it. It also helps the child see that they are not making a mistake when they can't sound the word out accurately. It's kind of like the word is making the mistake by not following the rules.
