As you enter the Post Office, I immediately saw a young lady with the Pocket 3 right in front of you.. lol! Great day out and about with Rod, your fantastic tour guide of Saigon.

I saw that, too. I remember noticing the Pocket 3 as soon as I went into the post office. But then I forgot about it until I saw the video later on. I think once you start shooting KZfaq videos, you notice every camera within a 5 km radius. You develop a certain camera radar. At least I do. 😁 And there's something about the Pocket 3 that makes it stand out.

I ended up taking my day with Rod and making four videos out of it. I think the day naturally fell into four sections, and I decided to publish one part per day. So Part 2 will be published today. And then Parts 3 & 4 will be published the next day and the day after. 😀

That's right. It took me a while to figure it out, and Rod had to explain it to me, but I finally made the connection: Cộng Cà Phê ------- Việt Cộng

Cc when i first saw cong was the name of the cafe, my first thought was viet cong. I'm american and 69 y.o. i remember the war coming into our living room every night. The viet cong were brutal so it was creepy seeing those uniforms.

I was so slow to figure that out and make the connection. Rod had to spell it out for me. As usual, I blame my slowness on the GoPro. 🤪 Somehow shooing video uses up so much of my brain that I end up not making connections like that.

The fighters from North Vietnam
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 17 күн бұрын
Yes, that was the answer I was thinking of. However, since then, I've learned a bit more. I think there is a distinction between the actual soldiers from the north, the regular North Vietnamese Army, and the Viet Cong. The fighters from North Vietnam were regulars of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). But the Viet Cong were actually from the south. They were fighting for the north and believed in communism, but they were actually from South Vietnam. So, technically, this cafe was named after the fighters from South Vietnam. They just happened to be fighting on the side of North Vietnam.

Cross the Saigon river to see the different Saigon. Not many tourists come to this place. They all concentrate in District 1 They didn’t know and see the real Saigon.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug Ай бұрын
I'm not sure that the concept of a "real Saigon" is a useful one. I understand the idea that District 1 is considered the tourist-oriented part of the city, and that many of the sights and conveniences for foreigners are located there. However, that doesn't make it any less real to me. I'm not sure that the other districts are so profoundly different. How would you define "real"? While I was in Saigon, I crossed the rivers many times and saw lots of other districts, but I never felt like there was any great difference between them. There are more foreigners visible on the streets in District 1, and the majority of the beautiful structures built during French colonial times are located there. To me, those are all good things, so I enjoyed being based in District 1 very much. I also enjoyed my trips to other districts. To me, it is all "real" Saigon. 😀

I stayed in Saigon for about four weeks, I think. I've already left, unfortunately, so I'm not in Saigon anymore. I travelled down to the city of Can Tho and then north to Dalat. I'm in Dalat right now. There is a very good chance that I will be returning to Saigon (briefly) at the end of July just before my tourist visa expires.

Yeah! 😂should be Viẹt Cộng coffee, and before that, you have to do a việt cộng tunnel (climb up stairs) to the coffee shop. Yes 🎉the answer is the fighters from North Vietnam

@PlanetDoug i don't know how long you are going to stay here,but if you still have some times, I would love you to have a trip to Cu Chi Tunnel where You could learn about and how cruel Viet Congs were during war 💔 😢. But remember, this is a tropical weather country, and you are getting into a super heavy rain. Do quickly, or the tunnels might be submerged under the water 💧 🤔. Canada is wet for some time, but Vietnam is a super wet country. Stay safe Doug 🙏 and I hope you back home in safe n sounds

I am afraid that I was misleading in my explanation of the name of that coffee shop. The word “cộng” has been around for a while and predates the Việt Cộng. I guess you could say that it means ‘together’. Google Translate gives us “coffee plus”. I was pretty tired that day… The Việt Cộng were from Southern but supported the Communist movement. I tremble at getting all this straight.

This topic actually came up frequently when I went on the day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels. My tour guide stopped at one point and tried to explain the nuances to us. I knew all this from before, of course. But I definitely needed to be reminded. He essentially said that there was the Viet Cong (the VC) and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). And the Viet Cong were guerilla fighters from South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese Army were,of course, regular soldiers from North Vietnam under direct control of the North Vietnamese government. And the two groups were allies with similar but perhaps not identical beliefs and goals. And my tour guide defined cong as meaning communism. Therefore, the Viet Cong were people from South Vietnam who believed in communism. The internet tells me this: "The name "Viet Cong" is a contraction of "Viet Nam cong san" meaning "Vietnamese communist". I don't remember exactly how you explained it to me at the coffee shop. But I think that is essentially what you said, right? I don't think you got anything wrong or backwards. 😁

Thank you. Yes, meeting up with my fellow Canadian was great. I had a good day with Rod. I've noticed this trend of wedding shoots taking place outside and inside the beautiful French colonial buildings. I saw wedding photography outside the Saigon Opera House later that day and then at the Museum of Ho Chi Minh City and other places later on.
