Sally, I'm actually from Manitowoc (I'm sure you heard of that place), but my mom (1920-2012) was from TR. At 00:19 you show a snatch of what was my grandfather's mom and pop grocery store on East St..: Mom grew up above it. It was on the near side of the Tavern with the Green and Gold trim. The tattoo parlor downtown in ca. 1939-40 was a lunch counter which my Manitowoc dad ran and where he met my mom. Mom passed the place on her way between the "Red Bank" and the "White Bank" where she made deposits from a financial company where she worked after she graduated from Washington High School. I have several cousins who grew up in TR. Though I never lived in TR except for sometimes when mom and I were shuttle between relatives when dad served in the WW II Army, I spent parts of summers in the early 1950s there. I moved from the area for work after graduating from the UW in 1964 and live outside Washington DC. In Manitowoc, a favorite activity during my high school years was to park at the various beaches and "watch the submarine races." Was that done in TR in your days there??? LOL It was theoretically possible as Naval Reserve units did have some submarines on the lake. It was hard to see the races through steamed-up car window!

@smartysmarty1714 Our usual Sub spotting venue when in High School (Lincoln) was about where the current Manitowoc Marina is now. We would sometimes have a friendly tap on the car windows from Manitowoc's finest to remind us to turn on the defrosters to clear the car windows before we drove off - The better to see the road. We started dating when she was 15 and I was 16. We got married when we both had graduated from the UW and were married for almost 53 years until her passing five years ago.

@@jonteske4267 --- I'm sorry for your loss John. But 53 years together is commendable, and you were fortunate enough to have been together all your adult lives. That was an amazing gift! And aside from that, I do remember the friendly tap on the window a time or two myself, but I was down in the Waukesha area. These days, we'd probably get hauled out and tazed...at least in some instances!

What a fun video! I haven't seen much of Wisconsin and I have lived here my entire life! I'm a homebody and have never enjoyed traveling, but I do like to watch other people on their adventures. Kind of makes me feel like I've been there. Two Rivers is a beautiful place! Thanks, Sally and Marty!

Your timing of posting this was perfect! I’d just walked in from having a couple beers with my best friend and needed 30 minutes chill time before bed and what better way to spend that than with you and Marty! Same age growing up in lakeside cities just different lake this is a fantastic video my friend. Oregon, Ohio on the shore of Lake Erie just east of Toledo is known for its lake breezes too. Those “what used to be where” conversations with old friends are fantastic! I want to visit Two Rivers after watching this!

I was in Two Rivers in June 2022 to visit the Hamilton press facility. I passed a Family Dollar store and saw a car in the parking lot covered in Green Bay Packer stickers, all different. I had to snap a photo. Three towns I am familiar with that have changed very little in the past several decades are Cedarburg, Whitefish Bay and Shorewood. Waupaca is a small town well worth a visit. The downtown has been improved and the near by chain of lakes are a spectacular place to enjoy.

If the picture of the 'Yearbook signing' shows both Marty and Sally sitting on the wall - then I know what Marty misses most about Two Rivers. -- It's his hair. Marty - Sally -- when you asked the question - "DO you have an idea why they call this city the coolest place in Wisconsin?" - My first thought was "Because Sally and Marty come from there" Of course I'm right - because everyone that knows me knows - I am always correct.

As a teen who is currently growing up in Manitowoc, I would of never guess what history Two Rivers had! My great grandfather was a Two Rivers resident and before he died told some stories about the downtown area of the city. Even being a teen, I have seen alot change in Two Rivers in the past few years. It's sad since Manitowoc has more people but some how still can't keep family business and other things open. The community is alot more connected I feel in Two Rivers. Nice video and very informative!

Ive lived 10 minutes south in Manitowoc my whole life. The store i miss the most in TR is Evan's. As a kid walking down to the basement it opened up into one of the best toy stores a child could ask for. Its a neat thrift store now and the basement is used for about half the year as a Christmas accessories haven. I think the best edition to the town in recent years has been Heroes Venture Arcade. It has anything from classics like Pac-Man and Centipede to alot of the newer games. Great place. And if you want a pizza TR is the place to go. Between Port Sandy Bay and The Waverly they have the best pizzas in the area by far. Thanks for the tour. Well done.

Some years ago, I toured Hamilton Co. and the Nuclear Power Plant. At that time, tours were right inside and you got a great explanation of how power was generated from nuclear fusion boiling water to drive a steam generator then dumping the condensation into Lake Michigan. Warm water attracted lots of fish and mussels.

Being from two rivers I was surprised you didn’t bring up charleton hestons wife Lydia was born and raised there. They also used to make a trip back there. Nice to see Mocha keeping Marty on a short leash😂 But, seriously, you mentioned NESCO, they must have had an assembly plant in TwoRivers back in the day? Lotsa small towns, especially throughout the midwest, used to have manufacturing jobs, kinda like the town's big employer. NESCO was big in Granite City, IL but, alas, those jobs dried up and were exported back in the 80s and 90s.😢

HELLO! from across the big lake, Traverse City. I'm enjoying your small town travel logs. I lived in small towns my whole life and my last job was in township government and local fire departments for 47 years and was the Chief in the last one for 30 years. We are retired and have relatives in Marathon County, and they invited us to come live with them. We did not have children, we helped raise these kids, now adults and they wanted to pay us back for keeping them in school clothes and taking them on vacations to the UP and being a good example I guess. So Sally & Marty you have been our travel guides to our new home. Tip for Marty man of few words but right to the point, KZfaq Sterling Sirens the are a horizontal drive with two impellers. Thank you for your efforts and maybe we will see you on the road.

Two Rivers appropriately names for sure. Point Beach State Park looks nice ! So my question is answered, you really grew up in the city. Rock City is really a cool area to hang out. Love the story behind it! Love your story of parent's Escort 😂! Definitely love the Two Rivers Beach by the Lake. The snack shack by the beach reminds of my child hood. Birthplace of the Ice Cream Sundae in 1881 at Berner's Ice Cream Parlor is interesting! You love your Ice cream don't you😊! Love Frank Lloyd Wright and th we homes he designed. That Egyptian style crypt is definitely fascinating 👏!! Schroeders store is fantastic. Manufacturing seemed to be part of a lot early history of small towns. So many things seem to change. Might be a good plan for the city center. Being a retired pharmacist, love seeing signs of a long gone pharmacy. Sad to see developments going up where some old places were during your childhood. It makes sense that a town on the river would depend on fishing industry! Glad Marty pointed out the Ww2 drone. I love that blue green house and it's architecture that you shown very quickly. Awesome! I was hoping you would cover it. Did they paint over the mural on the water tower that our paint crew did? I visited inside the ice cream shop. It also had antiques in it. I remember seeing something about a movie star or his wife growing up there cause there was a few collectibles from them. Also there was a dance hall upstairs and an old barber shop. I walked down to that beach to go swimming. Also remember eating at a crawfish boil they had near that fishing area/museum. They also pulled large ice blocks from the water there. 5:22 what is the concrete bunker behind the rock pile? What are piles of Ill lives on the beach? If I was going to live in the frozen wasteland of death called wisconsin, it would definitely have to be in the coolest city in Wisconsin.

I would have liked to have seen the houses you and Marty grew up in and the schools you both attended. Have you known Marty since childhood?

I grew up in Chilton, WI and my parents used to take us to a shopping mall that was outside of Two Rivers between Two Rivers and Manitowoc ….. I doubt that it exists anymore as most malls seem to have been torn down.

Fatzo's is by far the best food around. I bought my first bengal cat in 1992 from the owner of Fatzo's. Leonardo with a tiny fluff ball.
