I liked the autofocus performance a little better from the Tamron (and the smaller form factor), though the Sigma has the bigger zoom range and a slightly faster aperture. There’s not really a bad choice there - choose which one you like better.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I have another suggestion for checking edge resolution at wide apertures. I suggest comparing IQ when focused on the centre to when focused on the edge. This provides an indication of the degree to which IQ degradation is the result of field curvature. Useful info for people who frequently place their subjects off-centre, and then focus on that position - focus and re-compose is a thing of the past thanks to mirrorless cameras. Also, IQ falloff which turns out to be the result of field curvature is less likely to be an issue at longer focal distances - which is useful info for people who tend to shoot subjects which are further away. Other than that - perfect!

Thanks Dustin!! What are your thoughts on sharpness of Sigma vs Tamron cropped to 600m at longer/real world distances?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 жыл бұрын
That will really depend on the camera. A high resolution camera will punish that crop less, obviously. The Tamron is comparatively sharper than the Sigma (at least in the two copies I tested)
@richrollin4867
@richrollin4867 2 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Surely cropping on a high resolution sensor will produce better results. Yes, viewed at 100% a high resolution sensor reveals lens imperfections, but viewed globally (normalised print size), the higher resolution crop should yield better results.

Your gear reviews are the best I've seen Dustin. I'm considering Tamron 100-500mm. Not sure this has changed my mind. I'm concerned a lot of lens tests are using A1. The best possible autofocus. For the rest of us who can't afford $6500 body, how much drop off with other Sony bodies. I only have A6400 crop in e-mount now. All my full frame bodies are A Mount. Anyway to know if the Sigma or the Tamron will continuous auto focus significantly slower or struggle ?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, the reality is that there are always variables for reviewers. Many of us use Sony’s best bodies because (in part) Sony will only consider you for early loaners if you have one of the newer bodies that will allow their gear to be reviewed in the most favourable conditions. I do own the a6400 and a6600, though, and I’ll try to take a few shots and see how it works before sending the lens back.

So I have the Sony 100-400 which is lighter and smaller than 200-600 and sigma 150-600 or tamron 150-500. With my a7riv especially in apsc mode, 26mp, it gives me the 150-600 focal length. What would be the advantage of getting either of these then? ( I don't think I would need beyond 600mm)

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank You for the reply Dustin. For now it would be a problem to purchase the Sigma lens and also a new body. So the transition from f/5 to f/6.3 occurs at 297mm. IQ-wise the Sigma is a tad better at the lower end of the FL compared to the Sony and the opposite occurs at the higher end of the FL. The f/5 vs f/5.6 advantage of the Sigma isn't really noticeable. Despite having bought my Sony just under 6 months ago, I ve got no regrets after watching your review. Both seem to be great lenses and it seems its really a case of portability vs internal zoom vs AF performance (which may improve with a future firmware from Sigma). Oh...and price of course! Many thanks as always for a great review. Next, I m hoping for another rumour to be true - a new GM Macro lens. The already exceptional 90mm could see some improvement in the IQ area (vs the Sigma 105mm + Voigtlander 110mm) whilst retaining all the other features that made it so popular. I m sure if that rumour becomes reality, you ll be able to make yet another macro runner up review!

Very interesting review. No chocolates to Sony for limiting frame count from their higher specced bodies, though I suspect the purchasers of the "top" Sony FF bodies would only purchase GM glass + teleconverters. Hey Dustin, I have they R5 and rf800. I thought about getting a Sony set up for this Sigma or the G master for birding. Since I have no idea when this R7 (7D mirrorless brother) will be released. I just want a smaller set up. A6100 and this or the 6600. Not looking for FF for birding. Maybe that sorry A-1 C or whatever it’s called would work since it’s compact, but FF. What do you think about that idea? Or should I just save up and get the 100 to 500 RF. I’m just looking to get along with and most for the money. The 800 is nice but you really have to shoot at high ISO and it’s a pain not being able to zoom in and out. I also like having an internal zoom lens.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 жыл бұрын
If birding is your priority, going with something like this lens (or the 200-600 G) along with the a6600 isn't a bad idea. You could get both the a6600 and the Sigma for the price of the 100-500 (or fairly close).
@Thomasjcolbert82
@Thomasjcolbert82 2 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hi Dustin, I primarily do like portraits and stuff like that which is why I have the R5 to begin with. But birding is something that I like to do and animals in general. And I kind of wanted a second set up so I don’t have to keep switching lenses off my R5. But that would mean I would want an R7 which doesn’t exist and 100 to 500. But like you were saying I think if I went with an a 6600 and a 200-600 G master or maybe this Sigma it would really be a nice set up. I don’t mind having 2 systems.
@orlangurs
@orlangurs 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this review! The autofocus test is the scariest one. Although I primarely plan to use a telephoto lens for birding, it still needs to have a good AF on moving subjects to get good landing or takeoff shots for example. I have Sigma 100-400 and it seems to make a fine job in these situations with a6600 and A7III (worse on older cameras though). Is AF really that bad here, worse than AF on Sigma 100-400 ? And, if so, how good is the chance they will improve its performance with firmware updates?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 жыл бұрын
If you are getting good results with the 100-400, then you should do just fine with the 150-600. It didn’t seem any worse to me. The 200-600 is just very, very good

Interesting, I use Sigma 100-400 with a6300, which I bought used this winter. It does nice job on APS-C, but what's quite annoying is that is not that sharp at 400mm, and APS-C seems to make it even more visible :/ I'm dreaming about buying a7III and Sony 200-600 in the future.
@orlangurs
@orlangurs 2 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI well, I'll rather go for Sony then. The price difference is not so extreme, as the one between 100-400 GM and 100-400 Sigma, but better sharpness, better AF quality, the possibility to use a TC and sometime in the future, if I'll go for a better camera body, to get a higher framerate in photo mode, mean a lot. Again, thank you for your honest and professional reviews! I still think it's better to test, rent lenses before buying yourself, to know, if they suit actual needs, but knowing what to expect and where to look is a big help.

The prime will always be better at 600mm but it depends on your needs, a zoom is much better for flexibility
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer - the prime is better. It also has a full stop and a third aperture advantage, meaning that you have better AF in more lighting conditions, can keep your ISO lower, and have more subject isolation. But for many people the prime is unaffordable, while the zoom can be afforded and is more flexible.

Really wish the sharpness held up across the entire range. I love the Tamron's sharpness as much as Sony's, but would prefer having the extra 100mm at the long end rather than 50mm at the short end. It seems like the Sony 200-600mm just can't quite be dethroned. It's as long, as sharp and as fast as any of the competitors, and it's competitors can't seem to package all of that in one lens like Sony has. I guess you just really get what you pay for at this focal length.

Hello Dustin, FYI Sigma doesn't have to reverse engineer the mount or AF algorithms - Sony E is an open mount and they're licensing the IP for the lens-camera communication. Whether their AF algorithms or motors are as good as Sony's is a separate question, but no reverse engineering coming into play.

Worth mentioning here is that most emount bodies are likely to be 20fps going forward, possible exception being the a7R line. I know that's speculation, but with the a9 being released 2017, it maybe cost effective enough to put 20fps into an a74 in 2021/22. As the new standard in speed is 30fps of the a1 putting 20fps into a cheaper body would not impact sales much. If there is an a9iii it will be at 30fps. Meaning to future proof buying the 200-600 might be the better buy long term.

I'd note that "Birds in Flight" can vary a LOT. Turkey Vultures are ridiculously easy. Hawks & eagles almost as simple. Gulls, terns, skimmers, crows, and such start getting a bit harder. Smaller songbirds like jays, cardinals, sparrows, and titmice are harder still. Falcons, smaller accipiters, swifts, and swallows are harder than the dogs or sports: very fast, erratic motion, small target, and often in the middle of a forest or with some other busy background. So "fast enough for BIF" will (like everything else) be somewhat subject dependent.

I have watched about 6 professional reviews on this lens and with almost 6 different opinions. I am not a pro so I don't know who gave the most accurate review, if there is such a thing. So to me my wallet and photographic skill will give me the best decision, not their reviews

I haven’t watched anyone else’s reviews, so I’m not sure what other opinions are out there. But you’re right - at the end of the day you have to make a decision for yourself.

It seems to me like Google is the better option for getting that information.
