Is the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 EF-M a good lens for vlogging? I've been asking myself that question ever since I started using the Sigma as a replacement for my Canon 11-22mm EF-M lens. This video talks about the differences between the lenses when used for vlogging, and serves as a follow-up to my recent review (linked below).

Very helpful. I actually just got the Sigma 16mm for my Canon M50. Question: How does the 11-22 compare to the kit lenses on the Canon M50. Curious to know how these exact shots you took would look like between the two.

Exactly what I've been feeling. Makes me almost travel sick watching the 16mm with such a shallow depth of field, especially outsode. The 11mm shows the environment you're in, which seems more 'natural' to my eye, like a normal face to face conversation view. Sigma looks awesome for low light, colour, and detail though. I've mostly used my kit 15mm on my M50, but got my old 22mm out the other day too. 15mm is a good all rounder IMO. Thanks for your video!

Todd nice video. Your premise captures exactly the dilemma that most M50 users with the kit lens at 15-45mm have. The 11-22 is a lovely lens and of course retains the image stabilisation and stepper motor benefits.. But it suffers exactly the same issues as the kit lens in low light. In my humble opinion, those seeking the super shallow depth, buttery background and fast focusing of the sigma 16mm are unlikely to go for another lens which exhibits the very limitations that the kit lens has. 11mm is not far away from 15mm. The Sigma coupled with the 15-45mm kit lens is much more of a quality and value proposition with many more beneits than the 11-22mm with the kit lens. Take care, stay safe and healthy Todd. Ray

I have a Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM with a EOS M - EF adapter which is a perfect combo for vlogging in daylight with the M50 and a much cheaper solution than the Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4.0-5.6 IS STM if you get a third party adapter (I have the original as I got it really cheap but the third party adapters works generally just as fine). Just a tip! I've just ordered the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 EF-M (today actually) and can't wait to try it out for indoors- and landscape/portrait photography!

In my ultimate flogging bag I have three Canon M 50s; one on a three axis gimbal with a 22 pancake lens, another on the carbon fibre tripod with a 55-200 and the famous Casey Neistat vlogging lens 11-22 on my Joby 3K Pro (you’ve also got to have variable ND’s to fit every lens), Mavic mini (with 8, 16, 32, 64 nd’s) and GoPro (especially for underwater). Plus Wireless Go and Shure VP83 lens hopper for clean audio. Oh, and a matchbox size led. The best part is all this gear fits in a bag on my back. Unbelievable!. I love all of the Sigma lenses for more serious filmmaking projects I think they would be awesome. Keep up the good work mate Peace 👍

I feel the same way about these two lenses..I now just vlog with the 11-22mm and use the Sigma 16mm for talking heads..16mm is just too tight & a bit heavy for vlogging.. I wish they come out with a 10mm or 11mm F1.4 prime lens that is specifically made just for vlogging with this system.
@dominey
@dominey 4 жыл бұрын
That was something I meant to mention in this video. I've been looking around at 12mm prime EF-M lenses, but they don't have autofocus. Can be worked around by always using the same focal point and "stick" position, but...what a pain. I'm totally with you. I think the ultimate vlogging lens would be a 10, 11, or 12mm f/1.4 prime with autofocus. That would be amazing.

Wasn't there a rumor that Canon is coming out with a 15 mm f1.4 or f1.8 (I forget, just know that it's a fast lens)? Also, a few other lenses they're planning to release, so patience is a virtue. Canon also is changing the game by coming out with a web-cam software (a CamLink killer) which will place them as the new go-to camera brand for vloggers & streamers.

Hi Todd-- -- I really appreciated your 2 reviews about the sigma 30mm -- especially that the Canon's Digital IS works with it (I had originally thought that it only worked with certain canon ef-m lenses). Quick question - I really like the color grading of your footage - are you using the Canon Neutral profile setting, and then grading in post? many thanks and best wishes, leo.
@dominey
@dominey 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You know...I can't decide with Canon profiles. I started with Neutral, then made my own version of Neutral to get it more "log like", then by accident filmed something with Standard and thought...damn! The colors look great! (lol). I'm now experimenting with a customized version of Standard with less Sharpening because the M50 adds too much for my taste. With color grading, I tend to keep things simple with small exposure adjustments, lifting blacks just a little, and using one of the built-in Kodak/Fuji LUTs in Premiere dialed-down to around 30-50% intensity. Hope that helps!

I think the people is miss understanding whats for the 16mm.. definitely isnt for vlog, in terms of sometimes in vlog you want to see the vlogger, but also whats around him, whats happening around him you know; and with the 16mm you are just losing this option ideal for vlog BUT, I think 16mm can be a monster for vlogs where you just put the camera in some interesting and cool place and you just find yourplace for get a high detailed image quality. But for walking and talking definitely the 11-22 or 10-18 are just the monsters for it. 16 is just an improve of quality for some shots and thats it

The 16mm @ F2, or even F2.8, looks awesome in urban environments. The bokeh really isn't being taken advantage of in this video. Overall the 11-22mm is more practical, but for daytime it might be easier to just get a GoPro 7/8 instead which has more detail and stabilization in 4k.

Absolutely agree. I'm waiting on a Canon m6 mk2 plus an 11-22mm lens to arrive in the mail, but i've been shooting on a Hero 8 for months and it's probably the most underrated and affordable vlogging camera there is right now. Its hypersmooth 2.0 stabilization is probably better than any mirrorless or DSLR brand out there, IMO. I got the M6II to get back into photography, though, so that wide lens will provide some great landscape shots as well as a higher res alternative to the GoPro. Also plan to use both for a dual cam setup when in my home studio.

For me at least, I think the IS for the 11-22 is the bigger factor for vlogging. your opening scene with the 16 was way too jittery for me to focus on what was happening. Not to mention the wider FOV makes jitters slightly less noticeable. For a good day like this I actually prefer to have more DOF to see your beautiful backgrounds more clearly but I can see where some specific scenes you might want the shallower DOF of the 16. Might be interesting to compare how the 11-22 @16mm performs with IS against sigma too.
@dominey
@dominey 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is what happens unfortunately when your elbow naturally slacks. The lens gets way to close and you have to flatten your arm to get the 16mm far enough away.

@dominey
@dominey 4 жыл бұрын
Jovan - the Sigma would perform better for indoor educational videos because of its large maximum aperture. Way better low light performance than the Canon 11-22, which needs a fair amount of light to look good. For outdoor stills, the Sigma would still be great. Only time I'd recommend the 11-22 would be for vlogging or as a "travel" lens when you want flexibility.

This is why the Canon 11-22 is a better vlog lens: 1. wider angle you see more of the background which is important for outside vlogs 2. Les shakier image due to the image stabilsation of the lens which the sigma is lacking, and also a wider angle just by itself causes less shakier images! 3. Its way lighter than the sigma

I think it's situational for example in this video I think the wider field of view from the 11mm is perfect because the weather was overcast and the back drop was relatively simple so depth of field didn't really play a huge role but I think if you were in a more colourful street or forest environment in future videos the Sigma would be my preferred choice to really show off that depth of field.

Canon's 11-22mm is simply a far more versatile lens than the 16mm. While the smaller aperture can be an issue for low-light, one has to ask, "What am I truly using this lens for?" At that focal length, you won't be doing portraits and it's (IMHO) too wide and fixed for general walkabout, yet the 11-22 does give you enough range that you could use it in a variety of situations. I think that IS is an incredibly important factor for vlogging, and the 11-22's stabilization is superb; the Sigma has none. So, with the Sigma 16mm, you can use the M50's digital stabilization, but the additional crop on the M50 will increase the focal length to the point where it's uncomfortably up in your face. Additionally, if you want some of the background to actually appear with enough clarity, you won't be wide open at 1.4 anyway, instead you'll step down the aperture, getting closer to the 11-22's max aperture. I personally think that 16mm fixed is just too restrictive. Not wide enough for real estate, not long enough for portraits, not stabilized for vlogging. If Sigma had made it 12 or 14mm with optical stabilization, boom...it would be perfect. For me, it simply wouldn't cut it for vlogging.
@dominey
@dominey 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome perspective. Thank you for sharing this! I totally agree on your final point. If Sigma made a prime wide angle with autofocus and stabilization, it would be the best vlogging lens around.

Not sure what you mean by "better field of view" really. The shorter focal length of the 11-22mm will provide a wider angle with less bokeh (background blur), while the longer focal length of the sigma 16mm will seem more "zoomed in" on your face with a blurrier background and tighter frame, as seen in the video. But during low light situations, the sigma's wider aperture of f/1.4 will let in more light than the canon's smaller aperture of f/4.0. Each lens has its advantages in different situations. Hope this helps!

The 16 mm looks more like a 35 mm thanks to the crop sensor. But it's not that bad actually for vlogging. For sure the 11 to 22 is better for vlogging on the m50 crop sensor but they're both good either way, thanks for the vid.

But the depth of field of sigma looks more professional.

Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. The 11 to 22 gives a better environmental and vlogging experience than the Sigma.

a 10mm f/1.4 would be absolutely killer for vlogs

The sigma is noticeably better looking. The cannon looks like an iPhone video IMO

You can never be satisfied if you are looking for wider focal. the wider you go for vlogging, you will have bloated nose effect.
