Hey Paddy! Cheers for that. I was already subbed to you. Great vids. I think it's one of the best all round lenses but it depends on the camera. For the Canon apsc series or gh5 with apeedbooster it's great but a 24-70 on a full frame is probably a better all round option. Especially something with stabilisation. This particular lens is heavy and metal but prone to going very stiff in the focus ring if it takes any kind of bang. Buying new is better if you can but maybe see what's out there on adverts and done deal. I'm vat registered so buying new is sometimes better for me. Hope this helps! H

For someone who focuses mainly on music videos (with a G85, Viltrox EF-M2, and Ronin-M) I find this lens my favorite. Yes it's heavy, and before buying, I was concerned that the zoom range wouldn't be enough, but after real-world use, this thing is perfect for me. For Ronin-usage, I've only ever used this lens, but sometimes I'll switch to my Tokina 11-16 when I need wider tripod/handheld/shoulder rig shots. Thanks for the long-term review!

GREETINGS!!! Hugh, I am planing to use the ultra version with sigma1835, even leaving them together when not in use because of the thing they say about broken pins and all that. What is your opinion on the metabones adapter in terms of reliability? would it last for years like a lens?
@jingtianwang97935 жыл бұрын
one thing to keep in mid is that for video, most cinematogphers stay below 35/40mm on s35 (apsc) sensors. Most beginners likes to use long lenses because there is less for them to worry about (and of cousres the shallow dof), I was there for a while, but the more I shoot, the more I relize mastering a wide lens gives way better resulte, so don't see why the zoom range is a problem.

I got the Sigma 18-35 a few months ago along with the .71 Metabones speedbooster for my BMPCC4K. Personally, I love it. I've heard some people say that it's too sharp. But, I'd rather have too sharp than too soft. But, I don't see anything wrong with the footage I've shot as far as sharpness goes. Anyway, it was fun watching your experience with it.

Hello mate, I'm too interested in Sigma 18-35 for my BMPCC4K, but I hear there is a huge issue when focussing cause of short throw (Justin Phillip mentioned in the 18-35 vs Rokinon cine lens test) of the lens, So what are your thoughts ?

Oh wow, I'd love to ask your advice. I'm a newbie with BMPCC 4k. I'm using the same gear as yours, which is Metabones T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x + Sigma 18-35. I like all the scenes I shot indoors, but not outdoors. When it's not sunny enough, the footage becomes blurry. Yesterday, I couldn't even focus on some leaves on a tree despite the distance between the camera and that tree was good. I am not sure what is going on with my camera set. I shot 23.95 fps, 180 shutters, 400 ISO, 5300 WB, and 13 tints, but I got blurry and flat footage. So frustrating!

Agree, I also have the 50-100mm. I actually like the 50-100mm the most out of all my lenses and it's the only one I bough second handed ever... My main gripe with it, is that is a very very fat lens which means it's not easy to travel with (paired with a D500) and lacks image stabilization, which is more relevant than in the 18-35mm case. I use The 50-100mm in concert photography if I know I can get close enough to the stage and kids parties and portrait sessions.

It's a heavy baby, dropped mine 1-2 feet (30 centimeters) into a metallic basket and it messed with my zoom-ring which is now a little glitchy. You'd think it's robust but it's really not. Great lens though, as long as you don't play basket with it.

Hugh, Just the video I needed to see. A review that evaluates the 18 to 35mm after awhile of use and mild abuse. I glad it has held up so well for you and confirms my plans for early 2019. I was at a beer and snacks event locally put on by a rental/retail shop with reps and products from Panasonic, Red, DJI, Sigma, SmallRig and a couple of others. The Sigma rep was showing mostly their cinematic primes, but he did have the 18 to 35 mm ART, that he pulled from the back and went over it with me. It was my first time going over it and later I checked their website with the programming cap available for a couple of presets. Quite the intelligent lens. Thank you for your thoughts and yes I sub'ed and liked. I'm sure you have a few tips that I can pick up on for future reference. Cheers from San Diego.

The calibrating dock does nothing to help with the lens front and back focusing problem. If it was only front focus you could calibrate it but that's not the problem with the lens . It can back focus one shot front focus the next shot and be dead on the next . Even while you are in the process of calibrating the lens you can't get 5 shots in a row to be at the same focus point making it impossible to adjust properly . Just when you think you gave it adjusted dead on your next shot show a back focus or front focus of all the way to a 6 or 7 on your scale . After hours and hours of adjusting and never the same result 2 times in a row you just give up . Do this test . Take 10 shots and count how many are back focusing how many are front focusing and how many are in focus . Now do this test a 2nd time . with 10 more shots . Here is what going to happen the first of 10 might have 3 front focus , 3 back focus and and 4 in focus . the next set of 10 could be 5 front focus and 5 back focus with none in focus . Each set of 10 shots you take will be different no matter how many times you do the test they will never be the same results. This is how bad the focusing problem is .

Well I constantly shoot whilst zooming in and out. It depends on the depth of field you have and perhaps distance from subject. If you're a few feet or more away you should be able to pull in and out and maintain focus. To be honest I haven't done super accurate tests.
@HeathcliffBlair5 жыл бұрын
Cheers. It might get tricky if you're @ 1.8 and zoom from 18 to 35 and back. Try it. I just did once more to double check, and, yup, doesn't hold focus at all. Might be different if you're at f8 or more on a bright day, with ideal subject/camera spatial relationships etc. Thanks again.

Love this lens on my Canon 80D. I am mainly photos and haven't gotten into video but for portrait shots, landscape and nightscape shots this is the lens. Solid build, sharp focus and nice bokeh. As for durability: I left my camera on the car roof when storm chasing as I went to move the car forward a bit the camera slid off and as the rig is lens heavy it fell to the road lens first. The UV filter shattered as did the lens hood (had it sitting on the lens backwards for storage) and a small piece of the plastic on the front of the lens busted off. The lens still worked w/o issue and repair was just under $240 CAD (lesson learned).

quick correction: just because the front doesnt move, doesnt mean it will stay balanced. the elements of the lens are still moving inside, they have just put a cover over it so you dont see it, and dust stays out. with that said, many lenses will employ a dual element focusing system so the CG stays put, like 70 - 200 f2.8s since they would be uncomfortable to use if the CG kept wildly moving back and forth, but this isnt guaranteed.
@daxshell2423 жыл бұрын
also... never be fooled by any metal lens. the fact is, metal is heavy and deforms. take any steel pipe and drop it on pavement. at the very least you will see a ding. then do the same with a poly carbonate pipe. its lighter, so at the most you might see a scratch. heavy metal lenses work against themselves in durability. Nikon gets knocked on a lot for their plastic prime lenses. but they are made of polycarbonate (Extremely impact resistant) and are light. they just bounce. meanwhile, a heavy metal lens will dissipate energy much less efficiently, and will almost certainly transmit some energy to focus mechanisms. which, if they are made out of the metal gears, are more likely to end up with a marred tooth than a nylon gear. tl;dr plastic bounces, metal dents.

I only shoot stills photography, and even a though I mainly use a full framed camera for landscapes, I take my 7DII with me just so I can use this lens. It’s far superior to my Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II to such a point I never use the Canon lens. I have never had any front or back focusing issues, which I definitely had on the Sigma 150-600 Sport before using the hub. However, as I’m usually around f11 with this lens for front to back sharpness I wouldn’t notice it. I’m also usually on a tripod as well and as I always forget to turn off my IS it’s no loss to me I don’t have it on this lens. I have some pretty serious upper body difficulties, and I have no idea how many times I've dropped it. Pain equals clumsiness and that's the main reason I'm sticking with DSLRs. The only damage I've ever had is a broken petal on my lens hood. That happened when my entire tripod went over and it landed smack down on its face with a Canon 7DII that had the battery grip behind it. One issue I’ve heard of with videography is how noisy the AF is, again this isn’t an issue for me. One thing that is an issue the lack of weather proofing, but I'd had it about 3 years before I realised. An excellent review of your experiences with this amazing lens.

I have a 16-35mm IS, but since it fell to the floor the past week, I’ve been looking for some replacements, Sigma 18-35mm is one of my choices, but, what about durability?, autofocus and everything else?, I have the same camera as you, and my now broken 16-35mm was like a 26-55mm lens on the 7DMkII. It is good as a walk around or general purpose lens?, for doing some astrophotography?, what about sharpness at f/2.8?. My 16-35mm was sharp as fck at wide open, but i dunno if the sigma is like my old lens.
@markharris57715 жыл бұрын
Ale Leiva I can’t speak for videography because I don’t do any due to my disabilities. As a photography lens it’s brilliant, it’s known for being equal to most primes at the different ranges. I frequently drop stuff and the only damage to this lens is that’s the hood has lost a petal when it landed face down when I knocked my tripod over.

I miss them very much (the 18-35 and 50-100), both excellent lenses for filmmaking. I sold them to be able to step up to the A7iii from the a6500. The 24-35 F2 for full frame is also a wonderful lens
@HuFilms5 жыл бұрын
yeah, great lens but such a tiny zoom range it's really like a prime! also, the 24-70 with stabilisation, though more expensive would be a lot more versatile. Particularly for film work with non IBIS cameras.
@_rhapsodist5 жыл бұрын
@@HuFilms not if you use it on a Sony body ;) with the A7iii i can switch into crop mode to get 36-52mm plus I can zoom even further in with clear image zoom!

Never really effected me as I didn't use it for vlogging what onboard mic. I always used a cine manual lens for that. Plus, I shot mostly manual focus anyway.

This lens has massive focus issues when you use it through the viewfinder. It's inconsistent so impossible to fix through their USB dock or your camera AF fine tuning. SEND BACK YOUR COPY if yours has these issues because I've been through the hassle of returning it up to 4 times to Sigma themselves. They later blaimed my camera for the problem but it's only this lens that shows inconsistency. I now still have the lens with the same autofocus issues. I use it through liveview only.

Love the presentation....just wondering how it would work on the new Canon R5....Something you might consider talking about sometime mate. Thanks and cheers

Yeah, good point. When I bought the EosR I sold this lens. As it would only be suitable for shooting in 4k crop. Then when I bought the s1 also, seeing as it crops in 4k at 60, I really wish that I kept the lens as I shoot in 60fps a lot. As the Eos R5 is unlikely to crop then this lens may not be suitable.

How noisy is the autofocus when using the internal camera microphone? Or a Rode on the hot shoe? Is there a lot of hunting, whizzing, clicking noises? Canon has a couple of "STM" lenses that are very quiet. I love that. Thanks, nice review!

My son knocked over my tripod with the gh5 and the sigma on it. Didn't crack anything but the focus has stiffened up and will not autofocus now. I thought about a dock to see if it would fix it but I doubt it. I don't have the $2-300 it may take to fix it so I have been strictly manual focus. Yep, one drop and its over as far as autofocus. My focus ring is very stiff now also.
@HuFilms4 жыл бұрын
yeah, most lenses can't handle a fall like that. my Tokina cine lens has same issue though the same fall would have totally destroyed the sigma.

Would you recommend these lenses with the camera for a first camera and someone who wants to capture portraits, landscapes, buildings and on the sidelines some videos for vlogging and capturing surroundings.
