One of the most common questions i've been asked recently is whether new Panasonic S5 owners should go for the Panasonic 24-105 F4 or the Sigma 28-70 F2.8 for the L-Mount.
So, instead of typing a lengthy reply each time I'm asked that question, I decided to make a video on it.
In this video, I compare the Sigma 28-70 and the Panasonic 24-105 based on all of their strengths and weaknesses, including weight, size, image stabilisation and versatility.
If you're looking to upgrade your kit lens, then chances are both of these lenses have crossed your mind at least once.
I hope you get some useful info from this video, and just know that both of them are absolutely superb options for your Panasonic S5, S1, S1H and S1R.

The 24-105 is so versatile. A photo walk , macro stuff and even travel photography - all can be tackled on this. I have a 45 f2.8 and a 70-200 f4 , but I rarely go to those lenses.

I had gotten the 28-70, but mostly use it for traveling hand held video with an S5. Found the 24-105 for only a hundred dollars more and decided to go for that for the image stabilization and extra reach. I also have the 24 and 50 1.8 primes for low light. I will miss the compact size and weight of the sigma though.

I’ve got an S5 and S1 currently rocking the 24-105 and I love it man, it really is a go to lens for any situation. I also have the 50mm 1.8 and that’s an awesome lens too. Love your content brother, have a great Christmas

Thanks for this solid review of both cameras. Do you find the reverse direction of zoom ring on Sigma vs. Panasonic hard to adjust to? I was a lifelong Nikon shooter and when I switch to Lumix m43, I loved the fact that focus and zoom on the lenses turned in the same direction. I bought an Olympus m43 zoom and could not get used to zooming the other direction, especially when I still had other Panny zooms in my kit. The muscle memory of years of turning one direction to zoom is really hard to switch. I'd love your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Yes, significant differences. I bought the 28-70 because it was a couple of hundred bucks less than the 24-105 and I've just begun with the Panasonic system. I'm invested in Sony with the a7III/glass at the same time. The focal length difference is a big change from my Sony 24-105 workhouse. With that said I find tremendous value in walking around with a lighter lens that catches the great imagery that the 28-70 delivers, with the low light advantage. I'm pretty amazed at how far I can crop in during post and still render tac sharpness with it. Another on point comparison Josh 💥

Hey Eddie! Great to hear from you. Yeah there’s so many upsides to the 28-70 and I actually think it’s quite underrated in comparison to other lenses in the same price bracket. I do genuinely believe it’s the best all-around option sub $1000 if you’re looking for something that can do an array of things. The Panasonic 24-105 is a seriously amazing lens too. There’s so many benefits of the Panasonic copy compared to other brands (the biggest in my opinion being the O.I.S…. It’s just insane!)

Coming from a 20-60. I use 2.8 zooms for my Sony so I probably won’t need the f2.8 here since the low light on this camera is so darn good! I hope the 24-105 sees a price drop soon… It’s been out for a while

Low light is really not that big a difference. The iso on the s5 is incredible, even at say a high(ish) 2000 its incredible. I have used my 20-60mm at 5.6 indoors and in low light and it’s incredible. So the f4 will be perfect. I walked around for 7 hours carrying my sigma 150-600mm lens on my s5 with relative ease. A 24-105mm would be childs play. Got this lens coming tomorrow.

The extra weight of the 24-105 puts me off. I do a lot of handheld 'walkabout/travel' videos and I even find the 24-60mm kit lens a strain on my arm and wrist!

Nice Video as always! Got the 14-24 and the 28-70. If Sigma wont announce a 70-200 I'll opt for a 105mm 2.8 Macro. In that scheme I think the 28-70 fits perfectly, I wouldnt have bought it as only lens. But now that I have it, it took only 3 days to decide to let my 24-70 2.8 Sigma go. Which is crazy. But the 28-70 just so small and nifty....

I've remarkably got vivid video out of adapted Sigma EF 70-200 and 60-600 (sport) lenses on S-series bodies. I shoot classical musical concerts and often have to be at the back of the hall.

Hey Josh, have you seen the new 1.2 firmware for the 24-105? Apparently it raises the duel I.S. from 6.5 to 7.5 stops on all the s series cameras except for the s5 sadly. Wondering if you've tested it anyway to see if there's a difference?

I just rented a 28-70 2.8 for a wedding this past weekend & it was so damn good! It was the only lens I used on my S1. I usually use a 24-105 for everything but the 28-70 really made me forget about the 24-105.

Yeah I had that experience sorta when I first got the 28-70, but there are definitely shortcomings with it compared to the 24-105 and I soon started using the 24-105 a lot more again :)

I'm giving serious thought to getting a Panasonic 24-105 because the Sigma 24-105 EF mount I currently use is significantly heavier and larger, especially with the Sigma MC21 adapter. The Panasonic is only 1cm longer and 10g heavier than the Canon 24-105 v1, which I find much more comfortable to use. Not to mention, autofocus with the Sigma can be hit and miss. The dual IS looks fantastic, too.

Dear Josh, does S5 perform better in autofocus then s1 or is this a myth? Prices here are 1426 vs 1645 (so close) and i like the s1, only thing holding me back is the autofocus. cheers

Great video! 🤩 Good job! Still on the fence between these two lenses. The 28-70 is 600€ cheaper than the 24-105 where I live! My shooting style says 24-105 but since I'm used to the 18-35 the Sigma 28-70 seems kinda nice and still better zoom-range. Decisions… 😢

You could probably pick up a used 24-105 for a similar price as the 28-70 … either way, both lenses will be extremely helpful for you and you’d have a great experience no matter what one you choose !

The Panasonic 24-105 f/4 was the first lens I bought with the original S5. It was great for the doc work I was doing: handlheld (so stable), run and gun, more daylight shooting. Lately I've been doing more event shooting and I now own a gimbal. So i sold the 24-105mm and picking up the Sigma 28-70mm to pair with my S5ii. I can't resist the price and the smaller size (also when compared to the Sigma 24-70mm). I'm already planning for the Sigma 16mm - 28mm for covering the wider side of those focal ranges. Will I miss the 70-105mm reach? Maybe, but I find myself shooting wider these days, own an 85mm f/1.8 and I'm not afraid to use the APS-C crop for a little more reach. Just need a faster lens for low light.

Since you own a S5ii, how's the Image Stabilization from Ibis compared with the 24-105? I am currently using the sigma 18-35 and I want to upgrade my lenses in my S5ii. I am between sigma 28-70, sigma 24-70 and the 24-105. From 18-35 (27-52.5) the 28-70 or 24-70 is better. and the bokeh from 2.8F in Full frame is 1.8F in APSC mode, so it's the same. but the Dual IS is something else that I don't have the experience to do comparisons with.

100% … sometimes having another zoom lens that’s versatile and easy to use without changing lenses constantly is really useful. I use my Sigma 28-70 and Panasonic 24-105 almost exclusively on my S5 and S1 :)

If I was shooting weddings primarily then I’d personally go for the 24-105 as it’s the more versatile option. At 70mm upwards you’ll get a decent amount of compression and subject separation at 105mm , so F4 won’t be too limiting as long as the light is good. Also remember how good the lowlight performance is on the S5!

I'm comparing my 24-105 to my 85 and the sharpness is SO distinguishable. 85 is so much more crisp. VERY noticeable when you zoon in. Is my 24-105 bad possibly or is there a setting I need to turn on/off? I am on the Panasonic s5 BTW.

Great comparison but I think that technically the Sigma is a native lens. The recent designation of “DN” in the model name delineates “designed native”. I believe it started with the small 85mm 1.4 redesign. I’m pretty sure that DN lenses have full access to the camera makers autofocus algorithms. I’ve read in several places that Sony did this with Tamron and Sigma and as Sigma is part of the L mount alliance I believe Panasonic does the same for Leica and Sigma. I guess what I’m saying is that autofocus performance between these two lenses should have more to do with lens mechanics than who built it or the notion that only Panasonic lenses offer the best autofocus on Panasonic full frame cameras. I know when I had the Sigma 24-70 “DN” lens for emount that it focused better than my previous generation 24-70 G master on an fx3.

The 28-70 is smaller and less pricey with virtually the same image quality. That’s why I went for it! But having the extra 4mm on the wider end would be nice

I used 24-70 f 2.8, 28-70 f2.8, 24-70 f4, 24-104 f4, 24-120 f4 on Nikon and Sony. The one I prefer for it s quality AND weight is finally the 24-70 f4. I think Nikon did the good choice proposing this one. No issue on quality even at full aperture, rather light (Never forget that you use your lens 2% of time during a walk but you hold it 100%of time). Of course the 24-105 is more versatile… but at too much additional weight and length. The 28-70 or 75 f2.8 is far less interesting due to the lack of 24 which is far more useful than the 75mm instead of 70mm and you can always crop but difficult to uncrop :). For the aperture, even if f2.8 is 1 stop better than f4.0 with the evolution of the sensors these last 10years you won far more than 1stop with the ASA capabilities. About the depth of field to be honnest I am not a fan of large aperture at wide angle (the fashion of 24mm at f 1.4 is just good for the lens builders who can sold them at unbelievable prices!!) so f4.0 is sufficient for me and I use better f8 and for 70mm if you want to make some,portraits by cropping a little, f4 is not bad at all and if you want more blur photoshop and assimilate are your best friends.

Does anyone know how the 28 70 compares in image quality with the 1.8 lenses in Video? I mostly shoot above 2.8 anyway, so I was wondering if the zoom would not be better for me. Besides the obvious aperture difference, do the 1.8 lenses look more 'cinematic' ?

1.8 will give a lot more background separation, but it's a lot harder to nail focus with shallow apertures :)

The 24-105 from Panasonic was one of the first Lumix L-Mount lenses. I think they spent a lot of time on that lens and they made it absolutely superb in my opinon.... Maybe Sigma just hasn't seen it as a gap to fill!

@@richardgorski23 Whats wrong with you?????? Its 680 grams of girth, same weight to Sony 24-105mm F4 lenses, in fact the only thing heavier of same type is the Canon 24-105mm F4 which comes in at 700g and they are all equally using 77mm filter threads and length of 120~ mm. If its too heavy for you, maybe invest into Micro Four Thirds as even APS-C lenses at F2.8 which is F4 in FF world, is similar weight of 600g and similar size of 100mm.
