I remember being floored by the image quality of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art on a 24MP DSLR when I borrowed a copy shortly after it came out to use with my Nikon D600. I was afraid that it would fall to pieces on a higher resolution sensor, but it seems that Sigma glimpsed into the future and realized they had to at least make their optics good enough for 50MP, like the Canon 5DS. Unfortunately, they also helped start the trend of big, heavy primes, which I found off-putting. Still, I'm glad to see this lens is a good buy in 2020, regardless of lens mount. Thanks, Chris!

Same here, i dont mind that my 24-105 from sigma is a bit heavier as its sharp and covers a wider range than the 24-70 - i use the 70 if i want to travel light, but if i just go for a walk or so the 105 is on my 6D mkii. Im still surprised how "strongly" i feel those 300g of increased weight... anyhow for Primes i love my 35mm f2 from canon - one of my best boughts, f2 with IS and supersharp - i own a 50mm 1.8 from canon and sadly i bought a used 50mm1.4 which had a damaged focus motor apparently (it can never get sharp focus with the ovf it always misses, only in live view it works) - so i looked at the sigmas and expected something compact but boy they are nearly as big as the 105... chunk chubbers... I would also prefer smaller more compact lenses, but both the 40 and 50mm from sigma are so long i would rarely take them along as a secondary lense due to weight and size. Plus for the price its a bit offputting to just buy one and see if i can arrange myself with it

I just love this lens. I bought it for my Canon EF and then use it all the time on my Sony via MC-11 adapter. I keep wanting to "upgrade" this lens but I have to tell myself that UNLESS I buy say the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM, there is no upgrade I want to do. Its a absolute bargain especially used for ANY users and Sony users, buy the EF version for cheap and get the MC-11 adapter. It works natively.

I just wish that Sigma would've actually redesigned the thing for mirrorless, it looks like they just stuck an extension on the lens mount to stick the lens the same distance from the sensor as the older EF-mount. When I look at Canon lenses designed specifically for the EOS M series, they're so much smaller than DSLR lenses for equivalent focal lengths that it makes buying into that system worthwhile. If the lens is just as big as the DSLR lens though, or arguably larger because of the mount/flange, one may as well buy the DSLR version because it can then be used on both mirrorless and DSLR cameras.
@rickhatch4793
@rickhatch4793 4 жыл бұрын
Sigma is designing new lenses for mirrorless. They just also brought the DSLR prime lenses over too. Designing new lenses takes a lot of time and money. Sigma couldn't immediately recreate an entire prime lens lineup for mirrorless, so they instead made their DSLR prime lenses natively mount on E-mount while simultaneously designing new lenses specifically for mirrorless.
@fellowcitizen
@fellowcitizen 4 жыл бұрын
Sigma only released the reflex primes in E-mount due to overwhelming requests from the photography community. Now that the L Mount Alliance has commenced there'll be more mirrourless-native designs like the 85 DN.

Chris, thanks for another of your expert and super practical reviews. My base gear, now for some years, has been a Canon 6D together with a mix of Canon L glass and Sigma Art wide angle zooms for landscape shots. Recently, a friend upgraded her Sony AR ( first iteration), but gave me the body as was not happy with the trade in price. Only looking for one lens for the pixel packed A7 R and the 50 mm focal length will be all I need. This looks like an ideal choice. Also, very pleased for you that your viewer base has continued to increase. A proper reward for your excellent work.

Nice review! Personally I think this lens is a unnecessarily large and heavy lens with outdated focus mechanics - at least for mirrorless cameras. Furthermore the bokeh can be a little bit "clinical" in my option. I'd pick the Sony Zeiss 50mm 1.4 any day over the 50mm Sigma Art. I'd also expect the lens to be replaced by a more compact modern design that is optimized for mirrorless cameras soon.

I owned one back in 2015, the image quality was the best I've seen but I eventually got rid of it because of its size and weight. I used it a lot less than I would like, missing out pictures in the end. I now have a lighter setup which I take out the bag much more. But I still miss the image quality of that Sigma.

Would love to see you review the Nikon 50/1.2 Ai-S from 1981! (or any old vintage lenses!) It's supposed to be one of the sharpest Nikon lenses, even to this day, so I've been considering getting it. It's for F-mount, but I assume you got a FTZ converter for your Z camera or can borrow one.
@Bayonet1809
@Bayonet1809 4 жыл бұрын
I have the 50/1.2 AI-S and it lacks any sort of sharpness at f/1.2, appealing only for the soft dreamy look that comes with high spherical aberration. It does sharpen up well at f/2, but generally is about equal to the 50/1.8G from there on. Certainly not up to the level of the new 50/1.8 S, or this Sigma. Even the current Voigtlander 50/1.2 Nocton (Sony E or Leica M) is probably a bit better. I personally like it for the brilliant 18-point diffraction bursts (sunstars) it makes, as it is the widest prime Nikon have ever made with 9 straight aperture blades. The flair resistance is a bit lacking though, due to the older coatings used. Mechanically very solid, no plastics anywhere, just a rubber focus ring and enamel painted metal body. My copy is a recently produced one (Nikon is still selling them!), and the aperture ring is interestingly still quite stiff, although the focus is very smooth and well dampened, smoother even than a Zeiss ZM lens I own.

@RealRaynedance
@RealRaynedance 4 жыл бұрын
Based on his review of that lens, the Sigma is noticeably better in just about every way. It's just a question of whether you think it's $550 better given size or budget constraints. (Provided you're in the US. I don't know about pricing in other regions. The Sigma is $950 new in the US.) If the Sigma happens to be within your price range though, check out some reviews on the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 if you don't mind the loss in light or manual focus. It's small like the Samyang, apochromatic (hence its price), and can even stand up to the a7RIV's resolution.
@momchilyordanov8190
@momchilyordanov8190 4 жыл бұрын
I'm typically not afraid to buy a more expensive lens. Unlike the camera bodies, they hold their value pretty well, because an expensive lens is usually a good one. I have two serious considerations, though. First is the size difference. The Samyang is less than half the size of this. I see that feature as valuable as the sharpness. Second, look at the Sigma 85/1.4 DN that came lately. They replaced their "modified" DSLR lens with a smaller, sharper more modern one. What if I buy this HSM and the upgraded version come in several weeks? So that makes me look at the Samyang too. It's not so "coveted", it will not hold the value that well, but for just 300? And they say it's actually sharp and with accurate AF...
@RealRaynedance
@RealRaynedance 4 жыл бұрын
@@momchilyordanov8190 For the price there's no denying that the Samyang is good. There's just diminishing returns as you go higher up. If you'd rather the best you can get technically and don't mind manual focus, the Voigtlander is still a good option. If you're concerned about this being replaced, I'd wait. If you need a lens now, the Samyang would still be good.
