Tony & Chelsea Northrup I’m wondering if you would recommend the 50 1.4 or 50-100 1.8. I shoot apsc so that 50 is like my 85 portrait lens, but there are obviously benefits to the zoom. I’m mostly wondering if there is a significant difference in sharpness and focus accuracy. Love the videos!
@ayayoutuber
@ayayoutuber 5 жыл бұрын
The 50 1.4 is sharper but not that great on video. Too much focus noise from the USM compare to STM. Sigma...will lose so much money when resale...you better not planning on selling it ever.

The 50mm 1.4 was the first non kit I bought. It's funny when you zoom in the Sigmas bokeh is better but when you zoomed out you could not really tell the difference between the two images. So $300ish vs $1000ish, my first reaction was Sigma no thanks, and after this video I feel the same.

I’m just now getting around to watching this one because I am researching 50mm lenses. Got a weird vibe. Tony was a champ, but there was some tense chemistry coming from Chelsea Northrop. I think model Chelsea sensed it too. At first I thought she wasn’t at all photogenic, but when Tony got behind the camera she came alive.

I just bought a 1 year old Canon 50 f1.4 from a local guy. I had watched this video before and, while I really would love the Sigma, I fell this Canon 1.4 is a lot of bang for the buck (I picked it up in excellent condition for $250). Maybe someday I'll get the Sigma, but for now I'm having a lot of fun with the Canon.

The first prime I invested in was the 1.8. Loved the shots (for a nubie) but the build quality was horrible. It fell apart at a friends wedding. I then went to the 1.4 and did not know until now why some parts of a subjects face were out of focus. Thanks! Last year I picked up the Canon EFS 17-55 f/2.8 and use it as my carry around lens. I've been extremely pleased with it. Two things: 1 - really love your ride, and 2 - Chelsea your right on with your Rob Base quote below :-).

I'm very much a prime user and owned the Canon 35mm 1.4 L, 50mm 1.2 L, and the the best lens Canon has the 135mm f/2 L but why the hate on zooms? The Canon 24-105 f/4 L is a tack sharp zoom lens at a great affordable price for full frame users. It is a jack of all trades and a master of none, but it does the job very well. In fact, when I was an employee of one of Canada's largest camera retailers, I tested the Canon and the Sigma 24-105 options side-by-side on a 1Dx and the results were extremely different. I love Sigma lenses, I won't hate on them, but I am just being honest. I think the Sigma 35mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 lenses are some of the best they have ever made. I just hate to see people that own the 24-105 f/4 L think that they can't take good images because it's "inferior". The best camera and lens are the ones you have with you.

Point 1: most lenses, zoom and fixed, are just not tack sharp when wide open. Point 2: every lens needs to be calibrated to the body, assuming you have a high-end camera that allows for that feature. This is critical to getting the best results from your lens at any f-stop.

Here's one product (which I have not used) that explains the benefits of calibration photographylife.com/how-to-calibrate-lenses
@smaakjeks
@smaakjeks 9 жыл бұрын
Rob Tannenbaum By citation I meant something that in a scientific way demonstrates a universal need for calibration. That article was mostly a how-to guide. I agree with the article that if you find your lens getting the nose in focus when you aim for the eye, then calibration is needed. I can also agree that there are tiny manufacturing imperfections when making the lenses. However, are these anomalies significant? Are they larger than the variation of error you get from simply moving slightly between the focus lock and taking the picture? Are they even noticeable under blinded conditions?
@robtphoto
@robtphoto 9 жыл бұрын
If the manufacturing imperfections weren't significant, Canon wouldn't have openly admitted to them by allowing users to make calibration corrections. As a pro photographer, I want to exhaust every option I have available to me to ensure the images I deliver to my clients are as sharp as possible. If the image are not sharp, I want it to be user error, not a manufacturing flaw..

The 50 f/1.2L is rather old and less sharp than even the Canon 50mm f/1.4. If you need the extra half-stop of light, you need the f/1.2, but for most people it's not a good choice.

DigitalRev stated: the 1.4 is not really better than the 1.8 only in built quality but not in picture quality. And the half-stop (or two third?) is not worth the extra money. So I only would choose between the Canon 1.8 or the Sigma or Canon 1.2 which is a beautiful lens.

Thank you all. That for me means that I will save up and buy the Sigma 50 1.4. I know it's not cheap but I plan to have these lenses for the rest of my life so to me it is worth going for the best.

Formula Firebird You can switch camera bodies you just have to stick with that brand. As long as the brand keeps the same mount then you can upgrade the camera body no problem.

Posting here since I value Tony's tests and expertise, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section. I bought both the 50mm and 35mm Sigma Art Lenses over the recent winter based on all the hype and to save a few bucks over the Canon 50mm 1.2 and 35mm 1.4 ii that my wife/primary shooter uses. (we have many conflicting gigs and fight over lenses). I really want to figure these things out, got the docking station, even returned the 50mm Art for another copy, but continue to prefer the Canon Lenses. My issues are mainly at 1.4-2.0 Apertures in low light/indoor from focusing to sharpness, especially when needing to crop and bring back brightness in post. Anyone have suggestions, input or some specific tests to run. I've been through the trouble shooting procedures and calibration tests from SDP and Grangers videos after using Sigma's resources. Surely I'm doing something wrong? Most shots were on my 5DSR.

50 f 1.8 can deliver something nice from time to time, mostly at 2.8. All true about it, esc. about focusing nightmare. I can go round that rather well, btw. but it a pain when i happens. esc. in public. I can wait to upgrade.. Nice videos..

Sigma is a great brand of lenses. But for film, you need ND filters. I couldn't use the 18-35 recently Xeen is next step up I think.

looks great! Nice review. If I were you, I'd have her in the center of the ark in the beginning of the shoot and shoot at around 100mm to get part of the entire arc and her in the center. her blond long hair and the combo with the grey arc and green BG would be a great model shot. rest the face and have the hand holding the end of the hair or something like that. I'm not a model photographer, I'm a DP but having her in the center and completely separated from everything seems like a good 1 shot to me. all the angles are ehh. Just think about the area and make that one shot count.

Silly question time. Though I started out with a Minolta fully manual in the late 70's, I have forgotten a great deal of the details. Is there a happy medium 'Optimus Prime?' made by Sigma that has a better depth of field, or do they only make high end, as in high dollar equipment?

Great video. What is strange though is my 24-105 f4 is pretty sharp. Not amazingly sharp but no one is going to look at the photos and think the focus didn't catch. Must have gotten a defect. Actually sharper than a few of my friends' same lens that they ask to borrow mine instead of using theirs. I always thought, "Why are people crapping on the 24-105?" and thought my friends are the ones with the defects.

This should have been a comparison against the 50/1.2 and 50/1.4. The lens want meant to compete against the Otus, 50/1.2, and Nikon 58/1.4. Just bc it's an f1.4, doesn't mean they're in the same class.

Look, we do what we can, and it's free. It's much easier for you to dream up a comparison than it is for us to schedule and acquire all that gear.

Tony Northrup, whoa there! You also have to realize that we don't know to which gear you have access. I'm subscribed, and generally love what you guys are doing. I wasn't suggesting that you needed to have the Otus, 50/1.2 and 58/1.4 in the same comparison. The issue was in the comments, people always compare this to the Nikon 50/1.4 and the Canon 50/1.4, just b/c of its aperture. In hindsight, I probably should have made two separate comments. One to ask why the 1.8 instead of the 1.2L (which was answered), and the second to tell people to stop getting caught up on the price difference between Canon's 1.4, and Sigma's.

I'm gonna have to agree with kingalias here. Comparing Sigma 50/1.4 Art to the Canon 50/1.4 is almost pointless. There's a reason Art costs almost 3 times as much as the Canon 1.4, and even you said that the sharpness and bokeh of the Art is vastly superior, which was expected. The real comparison could be made between either Canon 50/1.2L and Sigma 50/1.4 Art, or Canon 50/1.4 and Sigma Normal 50/1.4 EX DG HSM.

Its still a valid comparison, a lot of people are using the Canon 50mm f1.4 and are probably wanting to go for it, and shift up to a Sigma Art or Otus lens. I found this a useful and well produced video.

WRT to the 50 f/1.2, it's not a lens I typically recommend, regardless. It's expensive and solid and fast, but it's also old, a bit slow, and not especially sharp. I've recommended it as a basketball lens a couple of times, but that's about it. Incidentally, it's far less sharp than the Sigma and a bit less sharp than the Canon f1/4, according to DXOMark: @Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/EF50mm-f-1.2L-USM-on-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-versus-Sigma-50mm-F14-DG-HSM-A-Canon-on-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-versus-EF50-mm-f-1.4-USM-on-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III___197_795_1306_795_196_795

I would buy a canon 85mm prime and a canon 35mm IS prime. Its the same price as the sigma. But you have more range and the sharpness is the same on those lenses.

Tony Northrup I own a Canon 600D/T3i with the 18-55mm+50mm /f1.8. I consider to buy the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS to have a better walkaround lens because the kit lens sucks or I will save some money and get a Canon 70-200mm f/4L. I don't know if the Sigma is actually worth it compared to the Canon L.

Hi, i am a penal lawyer with more than 15 years of litigation experience who also just finished a forensic photography course. I have a Canon 550D and i can't decide if i should buy a Sigma 30mm or 35mm f/1.4 in order to be able to capture natural looking (close to 50mm on a full frame) pictures of crime scenes even un low light conditions, so i wanted to ask which one would you recomend.
