Sigma AM-PRO is a series of the HF monoband mobile antennas for 80/60/45/40/30/20/17/15/12/11/10m bands. Maximum power handling is 250W and each antenna consists of 2 parts - resonator and radiator with total lenght approx. 2,4m (its 8ft), sorry for my mistake in the video. Uses 3/8in stud mount.

Very nice presentation, Pavol. The monoband whips doing an good job. But it's not ideal, to operate 40 or 80m on an magnetic base, because you will have no good grounding to your car body, that's maybe the reason, your swr changing, when you touch the connector. Try to put an grounding cable to the ground of the base and connect a short cable to the screw of the passengerhandle. You can put an AndersonPowerpole on it to separate it, when you dont have your antenna on the car roof. I think, the second graph on the mini1300 is R, the real impedance and the third graph is Z the imaginary impedance part and the forth function is the smith chart. Have fun with your mobile configuration. 73 de Stefan DG4RBS

I have the 40m version Paul (think they’re manufactured no too far from me) and overnight on roof of my car made several contacts to the USA on WSPR with just 200mW power. Great video, and even better camera work 👍

Paul, these are great antennas, I made nice contacts on 40m and 20m, never had a 80m whip ; I was just thinking if you can park your car far enough from trees, you could take say your 20m antenna bottom, then screw an antenna wire to go in a sloping position to a tree and find out the right length to be resonant on 40 and 80m. Even more: you could take the 80m whip and make a wire extension to have 160m band ! 73 QRO from ha7wx chris

With this type of antenna I unfortunately always had problems with a good ground connection. The magnetic base is also just a bad compromise. I mount the antenna on my trailer hitch with an antenna base which also has a direct connection to the car chassis (shield). So far, that worked. Another improvement was the use of a shunt coil. With this I was able to set the base point resistance to match 50 Ohms at the resonant frequency.

Some clip-on ferrite cores on the coax as it leaves the magmount will help a lot. Also, the other design of this antenna as sold by moonraker is MUCH less bother to assembe/disassemble - you only need to set those fiddly little allen grub-screws once. Have a look at how it differs from these.... Still loving the X5105 👍👍

We used to put our mobile antenna's as far as possible to the back of the car. That way you get a more directional antenna and you can point the car to your favorite direction.

You presumably were in the afternoon, so indeed only local NVIS is possible on 80m and it's better to use a dipole low over the ground (D-layer absorption will take all your vertical signals' energy); I had great success with a dipole at something like 6m high and 10W (transmitting all over Hungary no min distance and circa 250 km radius). You should try if you still did not, that's fun! With a vertical whip, on 40m you can reach up to 7-800 km during the day. Depends on propagation, can be challenging if not frustrating at voice QRP.

I think the other graphs are for capacitances ‘X’ inductances ‘L’, resistances ‘R’, and depending on your type of antenna there’s a mix of all these impedances measured in ‘Ze’. Think of RF radio waves of AC , X leads the wave form, L lags, and R would stay in parallel, in an idea world. Careful of transmitting high power when sitting under the antenna in your car.

I wonder about these Ampro antennas - they seem similar to an inductor with the whip part of the antenna acting a bit like a ferrite rod inside an inductor coil - notice how on the 80m antenna, after it had been shortened the Smith Chart plot fell a lot in the inductance side of the chart, below the line: lowering the whip inside the coil, increases the inductance.

Would it be possible to configure say a 40m AM Pro antenna as an EFHW on 20m using a 49 to 1 transformer and if so would that be more convenient for portable use?

Paul, I had not considered a Mobil antenna. Looks like a well made setup, but because of conditions, I don’t think we can draw good conclusions. One thing I learned a long time ago is in a contest, your signal report is 59 even if you are using your big toe for an antenna|

I am wondering how to use this antenna as a balcony antenna. This type of antennas needs efficient size of counter-poise for getting good propagation. Usually people using their cars as very good counter-poise. Did anybody of you transmitting from balcony and do you have experiences with material and sizes ? Without feasible counter-poise the antenna will have just very bad SWR between 3 and 5. I just put a cable from the corpus of the central heating to the magnetic antenna holder. I got a bit better, but not perfectly.
@k2icc

It will be nice to experiment as follows: As the magnetic mount has some weight, then the antenna and some counterpoises to test right on the ground or mounted on some kind of tripod?
