First discussion of the roundtable series Refugees and Immigrants: Their Experience and Contribution to Psychoanalysis in North America by the Sigmund Freud Museum and the Erikson Institute of the Austen Riggs Center, 07.01.2023
The opening roundtable After Vienna: A conversation with Otto Kernberg and Thomas Kohut examines the experiences of two prominent psychoanalysts, Otto Kernberg, MD and Heinz Kohut who were forced to emigrate from Vienna as the Holocaust approached. Dr. Kernberg speaks about his life and career considering his emigration experience, and Thomas Kohut, PhD speaks about how the emigration experience of his father Heinz Kohut influenced his personal and professional life and work. How both men have shaped American psychoanalysis will be examined.
This discussion is moderated by Nancy McWilliams, PhD.

Thank you for this important discussion that helps me understand the layers of history that has clearly shaped psychoanalysis. I feel that every ethnicity that has experienced social and political traumas and injustices due to religion or color are each unique unto themselves, all having special needs requiring vicissitudes of deep understanding. I believe that it would be nearly impossible to heal within a human lifespan the multiple complexities of emotional, or, physical trauma all must have experienced throughout their lives.

For me the title of this interview may be : an anger and a silence the two sides of the same coin. It would be interesting to invite Allice Miller' son?

I admit that I was a bit worried that today's topic, Russia's war with Ukraine, would be met with the same 'silence'... But I am very grateful that a number of names were clearly mentioned: 'Hitler, Stalin, Trump, Putin'! Thank you!
