The reason usernames are important is to prevent the interception of 2fa sms codes.

This is great news. Major reason why I wouldn’t use signal before. There still should be a no phone number attached option, I am sure there are other ways to prevent spam than attaching a whole bunch of data attached to your phone number to a secure messaging service. Threema? Even better, every contact should have a different ID from you, similar to Apple's "Hide my email" that forwards email to the main account. That makes blocking, spam etc very simple to manage. This phone number requirement was and still is baffling.

The Signal demo shows you can delete & create a new username at will. Any PREVIOUS contact you've already accepted & established a connection with can continue to message you. So you can just delete your old username if Spam is a problem and your existing contacts won't even know. In an 8mo old demo of this, the demo shows Acct #1 creating username. Acct #2 uses the discovery process to find Acct #1, add them, then send an invite. Acct #1 accepts the invite and messages Acct #2. Acct #1 has "hide my phone #" activated in Settings. Acct #2 can now freely message Acct #1, but they can't see Acct #1's phone # *OR EVEN THEIR USERNAME. Acct #1 then DELETES and creates a NEW username. Acct #2 can still message Acct #1, but they aren't even aware Acct #1 changed their username since that info was never visible to them from the beginning. ...so if Spam is a problem, you can simply delete your username & make a new one.

Thank you so much for covering this topic I’m a big advocate for Privacy. I always have lockdown mode and enabled on my iOS device and I have nothing to do with any Facebook products so it’s great to see that signal is introducing this option.

Sounds very good. Usernames (without a phone number) should be an option for other apps, too. I hope passkeys will become another way to log in someday.

Definitely good move. However phone number is kind of permissioning element. So it has to be optional even for registration.

I do think it's right to add random number to the end as I did think couldn't there be trademark username disputes and issues.

As convenient as this would be, it seems like it'd open Pandora's box to abuse, scams, and spam and tarnish Signal's stellar reputation. I believe Telegram and WhatsApp already have that negative reputation.

Finally!! It's been 84 years for this re-architecture. This seems like a way to have one's cake and eat it too -- still preserve phone number for irl close people while opening up a ring of privacy to go off username as well. (I hope usernames are also user-changeable and there's some long GUID as the primary user identifier). Now I can perhaps consolidate my Wire Secure Messenger people into Signal. (Although I do like the ability to edit messages after the fact.) I'd still like for Signal to have true simultaneous multi-device functionality so I can use the same Signal account with e.g. 2 phones (and phone numbers) or multiple Signal Desktop instances, iPad instance, and phone instances, all syncing in harmony. Wire does this fairly well, up to a 5 device limit per user, and devices can be added/removed (and conversation history restored from a backup file) at will.

1:24 "storing a new blob" .....uh....what? I've been following Techlore and RestorePrivacy and a couple other tech/privacy/security sites/people. But what's a "blob"?

A blob is simply crypto speak for encrypted data. You have to understand that all major tech platforms now use HOSTED servers, namely Amz AWS and MS Azure. Nobody runs their architecture on their own hardware located on their own premises anymore. As such, companies can't really trust the computing environment in which they're operating. But Signal being Signal, they are WAY MORE paranoids than other tech companies In fact, Signal treats SIGNAL itself as a 3rd party. Therefore anytime they request, store or transmit data, ANY DATA, it's always LOCALLY encrypted 1st before being sent through the cloud in a big OPAQUE ball of encrypted data... an unreadable 'blob' of data that'd look like a random string of noise if inspected in a text editor.

@@mr.dude842Signal is an encrypted messenger using its own protocol called the Signal Protocol. For example, WhatsApp also uses the Signal Protocol, but it is less private, why? Metadata. Unlike Signal, WhatsApp collects as much metadata as possible. Signal tries to collect as less as possible. So all messages in Signal and WhatsApp are encrypted using the same protocol. (Though who knows if its true with WhatsApp as it is not open source)

Why RCS? RCS encryption is weaker than the Signal protocol and by default doesn't support encryption.

Do Signal have the ability to link a phone number to a username or vice-versa? If they get a national security letter telling them to disclose the phone number associated with @someusername, can they comply?

Apparently no. Signal can't even link your phone # to your Signal Profile name. Signal can tell the govt that a SPECIFIC phone number HAS a Signal acct. Signal can tell the govt WHEN that acct was created. And Signal can tell disclose the LAST LOGIN date/time of that acct. It can't divulge anything else. It doesn't know any meta data, contacts, and can't even link the Phone # to a name or profile pic.
