Australia released its 5th Annual Threat Assessment on Feb 28 where Director-General of Security Mike Burgess said Australia had been targeted by foreign spies. In Episode 1407 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta discusses key highlights of the report, shift in focus of intelligence agencies and how disclosure is now used as a deterrent to raise awareness and counter foreign interference.

I worked as a Consultant within a government institution, and I remember being approached by a young friendly PhD scholar from Hong Kong for info. As I am friendly and helpful, I was quite helpful. But then the kind of questions asked made me pause as to why a person who is a scholar in the field would be so clueless about commonly available information about government policy. So I ended the interview quickly at that point. Leaving, she gifted me a university badge. A few weeks later I saw a similar badge on the desk of a senior colleague. I realised this was a ploy for entry. This took place in 2011 !!! And I began to wonder if there was a bug in the badge !!!

@@aleaf355Sadly, I had suspicions, no proof. It's only in the light of later events that I could feel more valid in my suspicions. There was no obvious smoking gun. Now that all these intelligence findings are coming out, I can look back and wonder if it was the same phenomenon.

Whether its on investment, ecommerce or agriculture. Don't quote any nonsense. Institutional capture is widely visible in the US. However, the US and all the major Western democracies have transparency and accountability. I respect this feature of their democracy alongside generally absolute freedom of speech and expression (although it is under threat from cancel culture).

If the Chinese are meddling in places like Australia and Canada, it'd be extremely disingenuous to assume that Chinese agents are not fully active in India. After all, China already has a support base among Indian Leftists, most of whom haven't moved an inch from their "China's chairman is our chairman" ethos, whatever they may profess to the contrary. Add to this the Indian proclivity for getting purchased (remember Mitrokhin archives mentioning, "It was as if the whole country was on sale" during Indira's times), and we have a very clear and present danger to the integrity of our nation. Now that the elections are ahead, the sudden upsurge in farmer's agitation, Dravid Nadu activism, Manipur, Dalit activism etc etc all indicate that the great game of regime change is playing out. Patriotic Indian citizens must be aware and extremely vigilant against these anti-national and breaking India forces.

This sounds so much like the tactics used by unscrupulous people - usually Chinese mafia to target vulnerable people from developing countries and recruit them to exploitative jobs. Can your team cover that? Think of the Indians who got recruited unwittingly into the Russian war effort?

Digital evolution is playing a critical role in every walk of life. Many of these devices have been imported from overseas mostly from China such as cameras, modems, phones, embedded systems etc and are pervasive in the community, social places, commercial sites like utilities, airports etc. They have become a target for hackers. So intelligence agencies have become more internal focus to prevent disruption that could potentially cause loss of lives, economic loss and more.

Impossible in the chaotic democracy of ours. Imagine the ruckus that would ensue if GoI were to use disclosure like this to dissuade and deter. We would remain eternally thankful for many among the Indian Intelligence aparatus who track and thwart similar insidious threats without their leadership ever feeling confident to go public with their achievements. A very big learning from this for all of us is to see how their media does not conflate this with murder of democracy or freedom of speech, liberty etc. even when clearly the communication you so glowingly quoted from AISO are breach of individual's right to privacy. For them national interest, in this case national security trumps all such notions.

In India, we handle this issue differently. For example, we allow Soros and his gang to fund the unrest in India whether it is farmer's protest, anti CCA protest, Delhi riots, caste reservation agitation, hijab agitation etc., make them spend the money but after some disruption here and there, the whole things falls apart!!! This is our way of counterintelligence!!! In fact, as May 2024 approaches, huge amount of funds will be spent in India to defeat Modi but while such spending will help improve our GDP, Modi will come back with thumping majority for next 5 years!!!

@@nomulahemanth3109again percentages and absolutes? like china growing at just 2% and India growing at the same % as it is right now (which is good) is still more growth for china because their base is simply that much bigger, we aren't really doing anything special, rest of the world is still generating more wealth for itself, plus something i was saying earlier cost of living and job creation is still an issue that this government needs to address. This isn't against Modi, this is for him like he has done a lot of good in a fair few fields, hopefully these areas now become his focus as much as foreign policy and infra push has been.
