A bass line is a great place to start when writing music, but it's too easy to get stuck in a box and forget how versatile a simple boring bass line can be. In this lesson/demonstration we'll be experimenting with transforming a single bass line into 5 different genres of music by using different techniques.
Special thanks to Roger Reupert for playing the lick for me in this video!

It also helped me appreciate THIS CHANNEL even more: While yes, it's a theory/composer channel, because he mostly uses a guitar, I figured that was his only real knowledge base (and so took away, personally, it's easiest to write with a guitar, or at least with traditional instruments). But it helps show that theory/composer knowledge can be applied EVERYWHERE! I know it may seem obvious to some, but it just helps ground that fact even more!

@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen 3 жыл бұрын
A good bassist knows when to just hang back and when to take the stage. There's a lot of technically advanced music out there where the bass gets as much air time as the lead guitar and it *usually* sounds awful. Not always though. Sometimes it's written just right, so everyone is supporting everyone, rather than everyone masturbating with their instrument as they see fit :P But really, most of the absolutely nifty/funky/groovy/sexy bass licks out there were given the space needed to shine.

@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen Жыл бұрын
@@salty_3k506 Funny that you mention Primus, as they're sometimes (not always) guilty of what I said above. You need to be acutely aware whether you're making music for "normal listeners" or if you're making music for "other musicians". There's nothing wrong with either. But if you do the latter, don't put up a surprised Pikachu face if the former tap out and say "Dude! Too much going on at the same time!".
@salty_3k506
@salty_3k506 Жыл бұрын
@@andersjjensen i didn't say that they make music for casual listeners and i don't think that they should. Their music is unusual but the instruments still support each other and interact in really interesting ways. Also, could you maybe show some songs where the bass sounds awful just because it gets more screentime? Because to me, those two things aren't connected. A song needs to be constructed around something like a lead bass but that's on the writing, not on the bass.

I'd really like to see a video on how important Timbre is to a composition, I feel like it's often very understated, but this video really made me think about it. All these people here chasing "what scale do I use for this sound" or "what chord progression do I use for this mood" are all barking up the wrong tree. Instrumentation, arrangement, production, and so on are just as important, if not more so, for these types of things. Seeing you do all those different genre arrangements really made me think about this.
@SignalsMusicStudio
@SignalsMusicStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Jeff Schneider has a fairly recent video talking about the importance of timbre. I firmly believe that execution is half that battle- a simple arpeggio can sound lame as hell when played on a midi piano but absolutely sacred when played on a harp by a real human!

A good example of the pedalling concept in action is during Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2" during the guitar solo. The bass just keeps playing the same thing, while chord changes are layered on top by the organ. When your bassist whines that "it's too simple" - just slap them and remind them that they are a BASSIST :)

I have a request: Prince's music always had an odd sound to me; A flatted note in odd places, clashing yet pleasant harmonics, and something of a disjointed sound that worked very well. I have no idea how it was constructed, what scales were used, or any of the theory behind it at all. I would love to see a breakdown of the theory involved in the very easy to understand methodology that you teach with.

This channel is so educational. I’ve been following for over a year and most of what you said now made sense. (I have no prior music theory knowledge). I’m now enjoying the musicality of it rather than furiously googling every term. Thanks so much!

Real talk... this may be the greatest music theory channel out there, at least from my point of view. Such a gift for teaching... I'm about as far from talented as you can get, but I do have a love for the process and the enjoyment of creating music. Videos like this have helped me look past my own limitations and just enjoy creating stuff myself. I know this is just one random comment from one random person on the internet, but I think it's legitimately the best compliment I could possibly give any teacher

This is phenomenal work, I often dismiss an idea if I come up with something simple, believing it to be uninteresting and limiting, when the opposite is actually true. As you said at the top the more defined and complex the initial spark is the less options you have for things that will work with it. The fact the key and genre can even be fluid is crazy. Looks like the bass has just become my number one song writing tool! Cheers

I loved this lesson especially the tip about simplifying the bass line at first so you have more options to work as you develop the song. I'm really glad I found this channel. The way you break concepts down and apply them is so interesting and easy to follow.

I discovered your channel recently... SO GLAD I DID! I love your teaching style, love the multi instrument approach, love the fact you use DAW examples, and teach music, theory and recording concepts ‘holistically’... it’s SO VALUABLE! Just wanted to thank you, and to let you know you are super appreciated! ❤️👍🏻
