I have the Volair 16 mm Mach 2 forza. Did you feel the need to add any lead tape to the four and 8 o’clock positions due to its light static weight?
@stspickleball
@stspickleball 5 ай бұрын
I actually really enjoy it with 4-5 inches of 1g/in lead tape starting 1inch out from the grip going up the throat into the sides of the paddle. Helps me with my serves and drives for sure but it does slow the paddle down a bit at the kitchen. I still like the weight though!

I am a lifelong tennis player that moved to pickleball. I am older and started playing long before the massive topspin style came about - yeah I know there was always topspin - but not like tennis in the modern era. Anyway, my tennis game is fairly flat but really wanted to get good spin as I ramped up my pickleball game. I saw this review and bought the Forza Mach 2 14" (thanks for the discount code). That paddle has massively improved my spin, control and my overall game. Mostly because of the confidence boost it has given me. I have not tried tape or anything. I love the quickness of the paddle. The 14" is a little smaller of a paddle than my Head, but I have had no sweet spot issues. I am excited to continue the pickleball journey with my Forza Mach 2.

My current paddle is the Volair Mach 2 Forza 16mm as well. It was an adjustment going to that shorter paddle from elongated paddles but I did find that the faster hand speed paid off immediately with a higher win percentage in hands battles or anytime I just needed to react faster. I thought I would like the Mach 1 Forza 16mm more, so I got one and so far I'm not super impressed. My initial impression was a letdown. It just wasn't very forgiving and it felt softer than tghe Mach 2 Forza. However, I tried it without lead with much disappointment and then started adding lead. It plays significantly better now, but I'm already at 9oz using 2grm/inch lead starting at the bottom corners up to the middle of the sides. I'd be curious on your comparative thoughts between these two paddles.
@stspickleball
@stspickleball 4 ай бұрын
I really like the Mach 1 Forza with lead at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions. But, yes.. Overall I think the Mach 2 Forza is far more forgiving and has better spin numbers. It's just a better paddle. Volair really nailed that one. Really the only thing I like better about the Mach 1 is my drives as long as it has lead tape :)

Thanks for your detailed guide in paddles' spin. I have a quick question. If the paddles use the same face sheet, e.g. Toray T700 raw carbon, how, or why, can they generate different spin?
@stspickleball
@stspickleball 5 ай бұрын
It’s mainly due to the peel ply texture being applied and how close they get to the boundaries set for legal limits. Better more optimized texture on the surface = more spin 😊

Hi there, I hope this helps answer your question. Take Rafael Nadal in mens tennis for example: He hits the ball with the most RPMs in the game of tennis. Other pros could use the exact same stick and strings, but can't hit the ball with the same amount of spin. Why? It's because of the way he lifts up on the ball with acceleration and the finish of the stroke; The higher you raise your arm, the more spin topspin you get. Just take a look at where his hands finish after his strokes. Mass times acceleration= Force! To get the most spin starts off by dropping the racket head well below the ball, and brushing up on it as you accelerate. Technique is the most important and having a good stick compliments it well. Cheers!

I've been using the Volair Mach 2 Forza 16mm for about a month (3.5-4.0 play) and still adjusting to it. I switched to a very low grip (a la JMV) to help offset the reach and to get even more wrist mobility but there are always a couple points in a game where I miss it. That being said, my very loopy top spin serves surprise a lot of people and I've been able to use a lot of side spin on dinks. It took a long time to get a consistent slice since the spin was almost too good on it that the back spin would make the ball die short of the net when I'd hit it from the baseline or transition zone. I just ordered the HUDEF Viva Pro Gen2 to test out a power paddle (I've been using a ProDrive Drive before the volair) since I do tend to gravitate towards a banger play style.

Really enjoyed the reviews. I currently have the Joola Perseus which has really helped my game. However, I really want to add to my collection, I’m stuck between the Red Ruby, Holbrook Power Pro and now I really like the Mach 2 and the Baller based on your review. Help me make a decision 😂 On a serious note, I’d like to know your thoughts on which paddle you’d do.
@stspickleball

Out of those options I would highly recommend the Mach 2 and the BALLR. I would grab the Mach 2 if you want a more control oriented paddle with the highest spin in the game right now, and the BALLR if you want the best all court paddle / spin for the price (it just does everything very well). I would personally skip the Ruby and the Holbrook :)

I mean again as far as bang for the buck the BALLR Heat because you could get 2 of them for the price of something like a Gearbox Pro Power paddle which will last likely the longest of any paddle on the market but is twice the price and likely too powerful and poppy for 90% of players. The BALLR Heat is utilizing Japanese Toray T700 carbon fiber and is getting great initial spin numbers. Kevlar is nice but it is a bit of a buzz word. Unique properties for sure but doesn’t hold up quite as well in my testing.

@stspickleball
@stspickleball 5 ай бұрын
Well stability wise it really doesn’t need any lead tape. I do like some weight to my paddles as it helps my timing a bit so you can try 4-5 inches of 1g/in lead tape starting 1 inch out from the grip going up the throat into the sides of the paddle! 😊 and if that puts too much strain on your wrist then you can just use it stock as it’s just fine stock as well 😊

Of course! I have a fairly newly upgraded 240fps camera and I mark a pickleball in sharpie covering 3/4 of the ball. I do 20 serves and then come home and go frame per frame counting how many frames at 240fps it takes for the ball to make one clean revolution. I then plug that into an RPM calculator and it gives me the RPM 😊

Great review. I have a question. I'm an intermediate player who played tennis for 20 years and use a lot of topspin. I've gone through several paddles that have lost their texture/grit in the sweet spot after 2-3 months, which is incredibly frustrating because even being able to demo paddles won't tell you if they will wear down. (I am currently using a Volair Mach 2 Forza 14mm which seems to be maintaining pretty well.) Is this what you are referring to in the last part of the video when you mention "loss of spin"? And other than reading tons of reviews online is there a way to know what the durability (if that's the right word) for a paddle is regarding its spin? Thanks!
@stspickleball
@stspickleball Ай бұрын
I would say if you want to maintain the highest spin over time you'd have to go with a paddle using multi directional layers of carbon fiber and the only ones doing that to my knowledge is Gearbox specifically their Pro series. Otherwise it's all pretty relative as long as it's high quality T700 or Dupont Kevlar. If you play a ton and rip the ball like a tennis player it's going to wear down the face quite a bit. Oh! Actually the Proton paddles maintain their spin for a LONG time they actually have a lifetime warranty and have great quality paddles. You can get them on pickleball central I believe now and use code STSPICKLEBALL on their and if you don't like it just send it back.

@stspickleball
@stspickleball 5 ай бұрын
Pro version is much firmer and has a bit less spin. I don’t like it quite as much actually as the 18k carbon fiber is already firmer than t700 and that coupled with it being thermoformed feels like too much rigidity overall.

Can you explain what’s the difference between $200 paddle vs. $35 one? 😊
@stspickleball
@stspickleball 2 ай бұрын
Better power, way larger sweet spot, way more spin, better feeling off the face, less jarring when you hit the ball, better control, better grip on the ball when you hit it. More premium feel grip wise and weighting.

I can look into it! I’m not a pro on footwear but I definitely know what I like. For me the top two picks are ASICS Gel Resolution 9, and Babolat Jet Mach 2. I’d go ASICS if you want something more stable and supportive, and Babolat if you want something a bit more lightweight and mobile.

@@stspickleball Your honesty and approach to providing these reviews is top notch. Love that the Heat got some well deserved love in this video. And 500rpm drop in 3 months for the Ruby??? Ouch. But help me understand... I keep hearing about "peel ply" or some sort of coating that goes on top of the CF or Kevlar surface that ultimately determines the grit/spin. If that's true, does that mean the coating on the Ruby just wears faster due to it being more aggressive vs the Heat?
@stspickleball
@stspickleball 5 ай бұрын
So the peel ply is placed onto the face of the paddle before it’s all essentially pressed together. To my current knowledge the peel ply is placed there with a texture imbedded into it and then once the paddle is pressed together whether that be in a thermoformed or non thermoformed way the peel ply is then pulled off leaving a textured surface. Essentially imprinting the face material with the peel ply’s textured pattern. So the surface is carbon fiber or Kevlar still there’s nothing on top. Again this is to my knowledge. So the Kevlar is a textured Kevlar on top or a textured carbon fiber on top and will thus wear down based on the integrity of that material. And thank you very much for your kind words I really appreciate it.

Hey what’s your preference between the 14mm and 16mm Mach 2 Forza and why?
@stspickleball
@stspickleball 4 ай бұрын
It was the 16 at first but I recently tried the 14mm and that’s my favorite. With some lead tape at the 4 and 8 o’clock positions it has more pop for hand battles, insane spin, and still maintains that huge sweet spot. One of my favorite paddles right now for sure.
