This video is perfect! I just left my music teaching position in December after 10 years. Yes, I left in December because my small private school was TOXIC! When I first started it was wonderful. I loved it and didn't want school to even end for the summer. My principal was supportive and encouraging. During my 10 years, we had 6 or 7 principals and academic deans. We had 6 secretaries! We had approximately 10 teachers each year and 60 left during my 10 years! The principal who came just last year was very negative towards me and never gave me a chance. I was doing Pre-K through 12th grade music ALONE, even though I begged for help. I was directing the high school choir AND playing the piano ALONE. He didn't come to a single rehearsal but had the audacity to say in a staff meeting that even if you weren't "Wowed" by the performance to still encourage the students. It was then that I said to myself, NO MORE! I resigned right before Christmas break. I was making less than $800 a month so i went back to public school to sub! I am happy and free to be out of there. My identity was so tied to my position there but the freedom from not being there has made me whole again!

Thats awful! Glad you got out. I teach elementary music and it's like a nightmare. The constant fights, bullying between students, rude and disrespectful kids, etc. I'm a teacher not a drill sergeant, which is what these students REALLY need - a DRILL SERGEANT! I'm so over it!!

I totally understand. I’ve been teaching on and off since 2001. My new school and administration is totally toxic. I’ve been blamed for everything by a manipulative and narcissistic principal, who has no idea what is going on in my classroom, and I’m done!

After a kid punched and hit several other students in my class today, I called the office and no one showed up......time to leave the school. I'm not a drill sergeant and don't plan on becoming one. Kids' behaviors are OUT OF CONTROL!!!

I had a student body slam another, and then in another class I was hit by a flying shoe. I feel your pain. There are no meaningful consequences for these students.😢

Oh wow! Absolutely! You are there to teach, not deal with chaos! It's sad and scary how children behave nowadays!

it is good of you to speak from the heart and relate the down side to teaching. James

I changed from a classroom teacher to music and it has made a huge difference in my mental health and motivation to continue teaching!

I'm in year 6 at my current school and I'm looking to leave elementary music to go back to high school choir. Hopefully it all works out...🤞🏼 ETA: I'm actually starting to have panic attacks when I drive up to either of my buildings. It's hard to say think about saying goodbye because I truly love my schools, but it's just time for me to move on.

I used to teach chorus and I miss it. Now I teach elementary music and I'm not really enjoying it as much. Way too many kids and way too many behavior issues to deal with daily.

I knew once I was having harmful thoughts how depressed I was because of my school and I jumped ship immediately, and I am SO thankful that there was a job opening where I am now. I was also ready to quit teaching entirely, and I'm so thankful- this is such an important message!
