A gifted child with high intellectual capacity has different characteristics than an average child, they sometimes don't behave and act accordingly with their age and they can have advanced thinking and reasoning abilities which cause them to feel out of sync with their same-age peers. How can we determine whether a child has high intellectual capacity? Experts say that there are many kinds of tests that can measure their IQ. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children is the most common. Dr. Frank Lawlis, Supervising Testing Director for American Mensa, will tell us the signs your child could be gifted / have a high IQ, how Mensa help, and what they offer to develop a child's intellectual capacity. 🔥 Click on 'Show More' for details (...)

So true. I used to feel connected more to adults, and I mean, intellectual adults, so not just any adults, people who I could converse and discuss and debate with. So at a very young age, instead of conversing with kids my age, i turned to uncles, aunts, or other adults, and I'm socially "inept" as well. My parents worried about me mingling with adults more than kids my age so they'd forbid me to visit those adults.

I was the same way as well. Also I didn’t have much time for socialising with kids my own age as I was always doing some sort of musical or academic pursuit. It was not until I came to the UK for the latter part of primary school to the end of middle school that I had more “fun” 😂 I just read your about page, how interesting that you are Japanese and Chinese. @leekenyon8705My dad’s side has an extremely high I.Q, on average, that I.Q is in the range of 160. The only gene I inherit from only one parent and not both, has to be my I.Q. That I.Q comes from my dads side, so it is assured that my I.Q is in that exact range. No higher, or no lower than the range of 160. I’m only ten commenting this, and I trust that no individual in this section would find out my identity, so that is the reason I feel sort-of safe stating my age. Now, where I’m about to get to is that some children that get lucky, for example, children in similar cases to mine, can learn anything and everything or at least just about everything quickly, and well at the same time. Some of these children that are fellow intellectuals, like me, can read and write pretty darn good! I don’t mean to toot my own horn or anything of that sort, and or nature, or try to seem like a conceited individual, but most things I’ve said have been pretty accurate.
@TankFavoriter
@TankFavoriter 8 ай бұрын
It applies to me, too. I guess you could say I too, am “socially inept”, meaning I lack social skills with children in my age. I mean, I make friends with children my age, but I have to act less formally and accordingly to how they act to accommodate to the kinds of people they talk to. At this point, I’ve entirely accepted that my intellect is far too high to properly interact with children in my age range. I am a person that feels that life is unbearable, inadequate. Speaking of which, I believe everything I do is in an inadequate amount. (to inform, each instance where I said inadequate in was a different instance.) If what I did what adequate enough to fit almost everyone’s expectations, my life would be more bearable in its own.

It depends on how you are defining "genius". In the interview, Dr. Lawlis clarified that a true "genius" is different from being a member of Mensa. As quoted, "In Mensa, we don’t test for geniuses. Basically, we test for intellectual capacity, which is more of a statistical term. We identify these people with testing by having them reach higher levels in 2% of the population. You can figure out that from a statistical point of view that we’re talking about a much larger group of people, maybe 50,000 or 60,000 people that could qualify for Mensa."

I took the test and got 148. above genius, I greatly disagree. No one is smart, we are all dumb. It’s about time, where do you put your time? How do you train your brain. If you only wash dishes your going to get really good at washing dishes, if you do puzzles as a kid you will do great on the iq test. All it was, was a bunch of dumb puzzles. Yes, I am a bored person. If you give something to entertain myself yes, I am going to do your puzzle. That doesn’t make me smart, it makes me determined to do a dumb puzzle.

i took a mensa test and scored 88 as in iq. and yet its only measuiring on region of the brain, the hippocampus which identifies patterns logically. its like only doing math SAT'S after learning other subjects. It's an unfair test and invalid test. I don't trust iq tests in measuring intelligence which can be so flexible and vast. Intelligence is defined as someone having a flexible mind and yet the test is rigid and inflexible. It's just an expedient way of gathering data and forming statistics. iq tests are fallacies of measuring how smart you really are. how you act in the real world and your adaptibility gives you insight into how smart you are, as it gives a juxtaposition yet we can't just categories someone with superior IQ's as gifted and someone with low IQ as not gifted because they could be just as equally gifted in other areas such as EQ level or people skills and social intelligence. If someone scores high on a iq test therefore, may have a lack of creativity and may be more left-brained but being a genius is being able to connect both sides of your brain and connect the dots between the neurons. intelligence is really in all sense, your ability to process measured by various quotient (emotional, logical, social, cultural etc.) but an eq test is more valid than iq test. it also doesn't measure wisdom. wisdom is measured in comparing your decisions i believe. Just because someone has advanced skills to solve difficult problems, doesn't mean they have advanced skills to avoid difficult problems. and i shouldn't complain unless i have an ideal solution. and what i say to fix these iq tests is to include more math riddles, writing downs solutions to world problems or writing a creative story, so that it doesn't just give you a number but measures how well you do in various aspects of intelligence and then that added up gives you your official iq score. simple.

@@JM-co6rf i actually got mixed results. 88 for the mensa one 91 and 111. it already gives you mixed results. you can't measure intelligence without measuring the regards of intelligence first and adding it all up. it's too vague to measure with one type of gauge. i mean, i definitely don't know myself and can't judge my intelligence since i would skew to the negative or positive side and automatically be biased. and analysing the problems,most don't even resemble a pattern or make logical sense despite looking at it at all angles which it supposedly measures how many neuron connections you can make. im not very trained and experienced at math but skilled in other areas and training in one field makes you an expert at it, but doesn't quantify how smart you are as a whole - thats what im getting at

Just described my childhood. I am lucky that I have a very outgoing and caring personality, but I have and always had very few friends. There is just not that many people who want to have a conversation with me and think I'm weird, when I just have a high IQ. I didn't have the social skills as a child which I have now, so it was my brilliant and caring Mom, my just as brilliant and caring Grandfather and Aunt from my Mother's side of the family that were my "friends". They understood me and we talked for hours sometimes. My siblings are also very intelligent, but they must have been born with wonderful social skills and we don't share the same interests. Now, as adults, we can have meaningful conversations. But I have always been seen as the odd one.

I really think these tests need to look beyond verbal for children. My two oldest children could have full adult like conversations by 2, but no one around here knew how to handle that and they were not pushed and challenged enough. I know have an 11 month old who I swear had a very high IQ. He does so many things I've never seen a baby do. He learns sign in just minutes and takes things apart and puts them back together, he's been doing that for some time now. He also has some pretty amazing problem solving skills for a baby. Yesterday he spilled a little water and slipped in it. I picked him up to comfort him and then he climbed back down. He bent down and touched the floor infront of him looked at his hands then stood up and walked. It seemed he was trying to make sure the way he was going was dry so he wouldn't fall.

The tests are a joke in many regards. The one he recommends and uses is easily confusing to “gifted” kids. If you’re a genius you can find relationships between just about ANYTHING. Therefore a series of questions on “which of these goes with any of these” is a joke. Do you mean the syllables of the words they represent? The direction the things are facing ? The color of the things ? The fact that some are sharp and others are dull? Etc etc. It’s infuriating. I got one wrong on the SAT because it was “ Which doesn’t belong Tornado, hurricane, earthquake, tsunami.? It was tsunami because it’s not on land. Ridiculous. Hurricanes don’t have to be either. Tsunamis , hurricanes, and tornados don’t have to be either. Furthermore, tsunamis are basically earthquakes in water so they are similar and hurricanes and tornadoes are whirling wind and are similar. Furthermore TSU NAM I , HURR I CANE and TOR NA DO, are three syllables, earth quake is two. You see my point 😂

A genius is a person with an extremely high ability too. Normally is through mathematics which include physics science they are put there and normally those people are classified as geniuses. You may test Warren Buffett and he may come out with an IQ of 120 but his abilities with finance are extremely above the rest but because he's not into science physics or mathematics he's not labeled a genius but a genius he is. Including Muhammad Ali Mike Tyson Elvis Presley Michael Jackson all these people were above the rest. There was a language in their field and they obviously spoke that language but they have a much higher vocabulary in their language they were able to do things that normal people cannot do. Mike Tyson is the smartest boxer that has ever lived Michael Jackson was the best singer that has ever lived and they may never be another one like him Michael Jordan is another genius is very clear to see a genius they're above the rest but they're not only in science mathematics physics they are everywhere in every single craft there is

IQ, and other forms of psychometric testing, also cannot be conventionally tested in populations that are neurodivergent. Those who experience and extrapolate information in unconventional ways. I am autistic and a synesthete. I see numbers and maths as colour values, landscapes, ambient emotions, shapes, ect.. I have to draw math, and understand it organically as a process and a dynamic behavior. Not as numerals on paper. I was forced to perform maths in the conventional way, so I consequently failed. But, I understand math just fine. I also become overwhelmingly nervous during testing, and show with an IQ of 84. This is obviously not true, as it places me at the level of borderline intelligence, aka mentally retarded.

The constructs implemented in these standardized intelligence assessments are very well-defined. They measure what they purport to measure. If you'd like to go through the extensive process of creating, norming, and standardizing measures relating to financial acumen (Buffet), boxing (Ali and Tyson), entertaining (Jackson), please go ahead. I'd be eager to see what you come up with. And then you'd have to go through the semantical process of deeming though who measure in the 98th percentile or above by your assessment as some form of "genius." One of the challenges I have with reading your comment is that you use the term "genius" very loosely. In the intellectual ability realm it means specific, quantifiable things. It seems to me that you're conflating the term "genius" with "world-class" by the nature of your assertions.

Vocabulary abilities can be influenced by several factors outside of the DNA...eg.having an older sibling, having a very vocal/talkative mother or even father, being around family that looks down on children that are 'heard' instead of 'seen'.

When assessing a child I also look for those pre reading skills that goes beyond phonics to blending letters within words without guidance, large bank of sight words with little to no prompting and a strong natural inclination to want to read. I am referring to children in the 3-5 yrs range when assessing giftedness beyond expressive and receptive language alone.

Vocal ability has very little to with intelligence. Einstein didn't really start talking until after 4. My whole dads side and I have higher I.Q's. We are all introverts, and we all started talking at a later age. We are all gifted in spacial, visual recognition. That's why were all designers and engineers. Although were not social butterfly's. We can still think very deeply but we have a harder time conveying it in words. So what this guy says in terms of vocal ability link to higher I.Q is B.S. Maybe in some individuals, but not all. Were all gifted in different areas, and have weaknesses in others.

Have you read about Multiple Intelligences, by Professor Howard Gardener? Howard defined 8 categories of intelligence, one is verbal - linguistic. So . . . that's wrong. Verbal skills are a huge and important part of the intelligences. But you're writing is fine. And much better than * MANY * people I see online. Why are you saying you don't have strong verbal skills? Give yourself some credit. It could be you are just shy. I was was shy when I was in middle school. So in 9th grade, I took a class in debate and another in public speaking. I did really well in both classes. It sounds like you are making excuses for not putting yourself in public arenas. You could go to events at your local library. Join a book club and talk about books. Join a hiking group, walk and chat with nice people. There are lots of free activities you can do to improve your social skills. But what if people judge me? People will judge you. That's one thing people do, all day long. So it's no big deal. The next day, probably 100 percent of them won't even remember you. And why do you give other people you just met any weight at all? Wish them well, let them go.

Unfortunately there are limited physical tests, which are more meaningful in the real world over a high level of speech. There are kids with low language skills at a young age, but are phenomenally gifted physically/scientifically - an example would be one of my ex colleagues had a 6 year old son who rebuilt a 2 stroke bike engine on his own, without being shown previously; but couldn’t string more than two sentences together. The brain works in strange ways, and develops sometimes what seems randomly! - he’s also talking bollocks about cannabis, sort of makes what he’s saying void.

I wonder if bad or negative parenting can do harm to a child’s IQ. I know some people who had their adopted son tested when he was quite young, and were told he has a low IQ. But if you met him you probably wouldn’t know this unless you asked him to do a math problem maybe. The boy is 17 now and can operate any piece of heavy equipment like nobody’s business. He loves anything to do with trucks, cars and earth moving equipment. He’s also an amazing water skier and loves to dirt bike. But he is very behind in school. I just wonder if the it’s a good idea that they’ve let him know that he has a low IQ and they tell most everyone in their lives about it privately, including me, since he first got diagnosed. I wonder if that has affected him and made it more like a self fulfilling prophecy? He’s agonized over it and asked his mother why he was made this way? and why he can’t just be normal. It’s very heartbreaking and sad to me. One time I was with them and he told me he wanted to be an engineer someday. I got very excited for him because I thought and I told him, “I think that’s a great goal! I know you can do it if you want it bad enough.” But later his mother told me he had asked her if she thought he could do it? But she answered him “well, I don’t know.” She said he got very upset with her. She said she told him she wasn’t going to lie to him and tell him he can do whatever he wants when she doesn’t know if he can. But in my mind I was thinking “why not? What the do you have to lose?” I feel like if it were my child I would’ve never told him or anyone else in his life that he had a low IQ. Now he acts like there’s no point in even trying and his dad says he might have to live in a group home someday. I personally can’t imagine that for him. I feel he should at minimum be able to take care of himself eventually if he gets the proper guidance now? But I wonder if all this negative focus on his supposed IQ is hurting his chances? 😢

You can figure out that from a statistical point of view that we’re talking about a much larger group of people, maybe 50,000 or 60,000 people that could qualify for Mensa."

Where do you live? Private testing is administered by licensed psychologists with expertise in gifted and talented children. Mensa is such bullshit. There are many people out there who are far more intelligent and gifted than the people who are 'allowed' into their organization. Why? That's because they require a full score IQ of 130....which often exclude many highly gifted people with disabilities. Given that an IQ test is typically given to help pinpoint areas of weakness and disability, it seems absolutely stupid to turn that around and disqualify people on that very basis. You could easily disqualify a mathematics genius with dyslexia simply because he did poorly on on some portions of the test. That makes him no less gifted. The same goes for people on the spectrum or dealing with ADHD...having a careful nature, or having poor planning skills could keep you from reaching that 130 cut off despite being highly gifted. Even the IQ tests themselves state that the FSIQ should not be the only number used in determining a person's abilities. It's ridiculous that a stupid club would require something so usless as a FSIQ score for entry. Just to make it clear...there is NO passing score on an IQ test. The FSIQ score itself means very little...it's the index scores that truly will tell you whether someone is gifted or not. It can also tell you where someone is struggling. Both are important to helping someone make the most of their talents and strengths as well as dealing with weaknesses. Many twice exceptional individuals are often missed in the system because a disability masks the gifts or vice versa. Also another point....all IQ tests are not the same. Tests given in the 80s are not comparable to tests given now...and of course, different types of tests will measure different aspects of an individual or weight things differently. Basically, I'm saything this video is full of shit and so is anyone who makes you believe that a child or an adult is not gifted simply because Mensa set an arbitrary cut off number that isn't even supported by most IQ tests themselves.
