In which Dr. Corey Olsen continues his examination of Bram Stoker's famous vampire novel, Dracula, with a look at Chapters 7-9.
In Session 3, the scene of our discussion shifts to England, where Dr Olsen explores Renfield's and Swales' differing responses to the perception of approaching death. The old man mocks it, but accepts it as part of life; the madman believes that by consuming other living creatures he can stave off death. Unlike the characters in the book, however, the reader knows that death is in fact coming in the person of Dracula, whose path to England the log of the doomed ship Demeter traces. Here, too, the perceptions of the characters are at odds with the reader's knowledge of what is really happening.
