That album changed my life, I was 10 years old in 1985, and that one blew my mind.

Was frustrated that my hair gel was discontinued and meanwhile everyone and their scented dog is now suddenly making pomade; remembered Sigue and got a bit of Studio Line Overworked Hair Putty. Studio Line still exists. Am happy. The commercial was still working, 39 yrs later.

No band had ever done this before - sell advertising space on their album. Some of these ads are fake, some are real. It's a novel and quite revolutionary way to finance your record. Has anyone done it since?
@allee-823 жыл бұрын
Which are fake then 🤷

@@allee-82 I've copied and pasted this from Wikipedia, it gives details about the adverts: "...Flaunt It was unique in that the band sold spots between songs for advertisements. Ultimately, ads for L'Oréal, i-D magazine, the short-lived London pirate television station NeTWork 21, and London's Kensington Market clothing shop Pure Sex were complemented by fictitious ads for the Sputnik Corporation and the (unreleased) Sigue Sigue Sputnik Computer Game; a spoken word advertisement (narrated by the Sputnik Corporation voiceover) for EMI closes the album. All original CD versions and the version released in Germany also include an ad for Tempo, a lifestyle magazine. The liner notes include small print ads for the various advertisers, as well. Originally, the album was going to feature eight different adverts for the UK, US and Japan releases. However, Tony James was unable to secure different adverts, so the releases in the US and Japan featured the same adverts as the UK version.] The eight adverts lasted up to 30 seconds long and reportedly each cost $1,500. Before the album's release, James said "We could earn $150,000 before we sell a single copy. Ultimately, the profits could be used to reduce the price of records". ..."

The Sputnik Computer Game existed but never released, you'll find a working version displayed on KZfaq

@@allee-82 That's interesting. I wonder if any band has ever sold advertising space on their albums since. 20 or 30 years later large websites like Facebook and others - which obviously didn't exist in 1986 - sold advertising space on their sites to provide free usage for their subscribers. In terms of seeing the future, seeing a situation where unit product that came via media would be available to all and was either subsidised by advertising, which would compliment the main product, or be entirely paid for by it, you could say Sigue Sigue Sputnik were ahead of their time.

Now albums and "artists" are nothing _but_ ads for products.

Yea this must have been from the US release. I also rember Japanese language adverts. An absolutely amazing and avant guard advertising idea!

There's Japanese talking for maybe 20 seconds within Love Missile "track 1" I still wonder what it says. Only on the album version.

I just got this album on cassette today. You're right there's a Japanese add I never heard before. It's played right before Teenage Thunder. Awesome!

Yes I was! Hahaha, and I was an avid I-D magazine reader all through it's early years. Then it went glossy and the end was near. Now it's just not the same DIT fanzine type thing that took to the streets that we all use to love.

Could anyone say what is said at the end of the last advert?
