Silent Air 20A - How to Change Oil

Hay Guys
Here is a video on how i changed my SilentAir 20A air compressor's oil. I called SilentAir and had them explain to me on how to do it. So i went with the easier route for now.

Just did mine, its super simple to take off the case, and open the pump cover. Then you can drain the oil in minutes flush the container with a little alchohol, and refill with new oil. There is nothing in the pump to screw up, its just a bowl with alid and a clamp ring, the motor and pump are suspended on springs. Do it right its easy

Great tutorial. I just picked up a Badger Millionaire 480-1, the 20-A made for Badger, for 130.00 on EBay. You are right Silentaire's customer service is awesome. I am waiting for the some oil, the compressor arrived drained. You vid was a lot of help. Thanks again.

Ya thats why i spent the money on this compressor. just attach and paint. 6 years now running without worrying about air leaks or crazy vibrations or the annoying on and off shut off from those cheap compressors. Well worth the money.

ya i do, running on 6 years or so and still works amazing. Still quiet and no issues. Well worth the 400 i spent on it years ago. I feel if i stayed with those cheapos on ebay for 100 id never get a decent air stream and prob would have went thru 3 of them by now due to how they brake down.

Cool video. Thanks for sharing man! Very informative. I have a Paasche compressor which is leaking air like crazy. I'll try to use some Teflon tape as you suggested. If that doesn't work, I'll either buy a Silent Air or an Iwata. I hate fussing around with these damn things. I'm an artist, I just want to paint, I don't wanna mess around with machines!

Thank you for sharing, can you share the kind of oil (brand, spec) you need for this compressor. I have mine seating in the garage for almost 5 years, I think will change the oil as I'm willing to start airbrushing again. Thanks.

I purchased the oil from silent air directly when I changed mine only cause I got the filter parts at the same time to change as well. But Im not sure on other brands you can use.

5 years later. Did you change the oil again? The compressor still working?

Ya its still working perfectly fine and i havnt changed the oil since the video. My plan was for 2019 to change it again in the spring time. This compressor is still running like the day i got it. All i have changed on it is the quick disconnect badger hose since i pop out the airbrushes a lot and it gets worn out or i step on it and wear out the lower end by mistakes. Compressor is a beast.

A quick question does the compressor have to be running when you drain the oil?

Hello! First, thank you for the video! I’m about to change the oil in my older model 20a. I bought on marketplace almost a year ago.. however, just today when releasing pressure out of the valve, oil shot out along moisture. The moisture isn’t a new occurrence but the oil is. I’ve reached out to the manufacturer but the gentleman I spoke to didn’t help. Is this something you’ve run across? Looks like you know what you’re doing. Thanks!

mine did that when I tipped the container to the side, the oil leaked into the moisture trap. So I had to clean it all out, replace the filter and clean out the hose line as well. Have you ever carried it and may have shaken it too much or tipped it over? If not then maybe you just need a good cleaning, get all the oil out, replace the filter in the trap, try and clean the lines etc. But my 20A I sold off 2-3 years ago and got myself a 30 cause I figured the 20A was so damn old I didnt want to bother with problems if they started up.

@@VinceVellCUSTOMS thanks for responding!… the oil isn’t leaking into the trap, it’s coming out of the tank release valve when unscrewing. I’m hoping it’s something minor. It would be nice if Silentaire had illustrations of how to maintain this party unit.

ya that im not sure of, could be a normal thing or not. or maybe a seal Is leaking. I had major issues trying to find out how to drain my oil and even then people said I was doing it wrong. To me long as im getting good air flow and no moisture in the lines and the compressor is going strong im happy.

Hi! do you still own this compressor? I just set mine up and it makes this gurgling noise when the motor turns on, doest it go away eventually? cheers!

Ya i still got the same one, going strong since i got it. As for when it starts up is there to much oil in it and is there any issues with it? Honestly if its working and only makes a sound when it starts up then may be fine. But i never noticed a gurgling sound when i got mine, but then again mine is a super old model.

hey! thanks for the quick response. you can really hear that noise at 12:00 but I guess it's only the sound of oil running on the motor. so far I'm loving this compressor :)

i just checked mine, and now i hear what your saying about the noise. Its there and i never noticed it before. i think its normal then. Long as its not amazingly loud like the cheap auto on and off ones you get off eBay should be fine. Just keep a eye on it and change the oil every so often. Man i posted this in 2013 may be time for another oil change as well.

You only use roughly half and don’t over fill

Take the freaking cover of you only have to change oil once a year sincom 32. E some say every 3 years it won’t go all over place if you take 6 screws out

Too slow. Remove the cover, take a 27mm socket and remove the sight glass. Connect a 1/2" NPT pipe into the threads and tip it and dump the oil out of there. Remove the pipe, screw the sight glass back in and then fill it through the tube.
