Tales of the Silent City of Mdina in Malta - A documentary video giving the history of Malta and in particular trying to answer the question "Why is Mdina called the Silent City?"
The history of Malta is fascinating, and the Mdina which was first built by the Phoenicians as a walled fortress, was central to many of the key events on Malta which had far reaching effects on history across the globe.
From the shipwreck of Saint Paul, invasion by pirates, the Knights Templar or (Knights of the Order of St John) and the first defeat of the Ottoman Empire this Mdina, once the capital of Malta has been built, invaded, rebuilt, fortified, abandoned and reoccupied over the course of history, and is now one of the top tourist attractions on Malta.

Mdina is one of those places in Malta that when you visit you can't help but be caught up in the almost spooky atmosphere of the deserted streets imagining the incredible history that has walked through them.

Mdina was only called the silent city when the British ruled Malta from 1800-1964. During that time period Mdina was inhabited mostly by old noble families, some artisans and the clergy. It picked up population when the nearby suburb of Rabat was used as a refugee centre during the Second World War. After the war Mdina returned to its silence and property at the time was not so expensive there. It only became a tourist centre when tourism started being developed especially after the island gained independence in 1964. Ever since that day Mdina has stopped being silent and its property is one of the most expensive in the Mediterranean.
