BareBonesMusic.com caught up with Jonny Santos of the band SILENT CIVILIAN prior to a show on a stop on the "Fear Campaign Tour 2010" in support of Fear Factory. Jonny spoke with Evil G. on several topics ranging from his departure/hiatus from his original band SPINESHANK. Why he and the band needed a break and wanting to create something new the result of which was SILENT CIVILIAN. He talks about their new record, "Ghost Stories", just released on May 18, 2010, where it reached #21 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. How he wanted it to be a brutal new record with the classic staples of heavy metal, blast beats, grooving riffs and the vocal growls complimented by soaring melodic vocals. Jonny talks about his upcoming hectic tour schedule with both SILENT CIVILIAN, a short stint with SPINESHANK and then right back on the road with SILENT CIVILIAN. He also discusses his passion for music and the feeling of being blessed to be able to be in not just one but two bands who have and continue to taste success but never discounting the handwork and hardships that go with touring, whether it be a bus or a van and not riding the coattails of SPINESHANK. SILENT CIVILIAN had to live and survive on it's own two feet. "Ghost Stories" certainly seems to be the album that can set them apart. Plus quality live performance footage!

I met the entire band last night on 6-20-2010 in orlando. There was 4 opening bands before them and during the entire time Silent Civilian was hanging with the crowd, playing pool with fans, having drinks, It was a blast. Talked with jonny for a while about his music, he's a great guy, the guitarist Dave is a pool shark tho, watch out for him if u ever meet him!

I saw Spineshank touring with Adema sometime in the early 2000. I took two friends who never been to concert before, we didn't like Adema headlining, while they were playing we went outside, we saw Johnny Santos outside the venue, he was very cool, talked, took pics. I will always appreciate that. I hope someday I can see Spineshank or Silent Cilivian soon in 2019.

I used to see Jonny Santos play at the Roxy in Hollywood and a bunch of backyard parties back in the 90's. The band he played with was Basic Enigma. They played with another band called Swinside Circle. Jonny and Rob Garcia of Swinside formed Spineshank. I would do anything to hear the Basic Enigma demo cassette tape that I bought after one of the parties. Jonny fucking rocks!!!! GtaMoviesGuy Lol, absolutely. 2003 was a way better time for lifestyle & culture, period. I'm personally not a fan myself of this whole "cultural shift" we have going on in modern society. Fuck it. I disassociate myself from it as much as possible; just for the sake of my own sanity & happiness. All that being said, Spineshank is obviously gonna go down as the peak of Johnny Santos' career.

Been listening to spineshank since 03 or 04, I strongly support that band and when Silent Civilian came out I bought the record without hearing it first, lol. Worked out pretty damn good id say. I'll continue to support both bands. Roadrunner Records has a tendency to water down bands, they've done it more than once to more than one band. Also, I JUST started learning the guitar, I'm having to teach myself since I have no one to really show me but one of these days maybe I can learn some of thi

@superveggito2000 I hung with them after the show in Vegas on 7/9. They are completely down to earth and fun guys. It really is great to have an artist that is down to grab a case of beer after the show and shoot the shit. Hell we even watched some American dad. They respect their fans to the fullest, and that is what makes Silent Civilian the greatest metal band. Keep rocking guys!

He is one of my favorite vocalists. One day I was roaming the isles of a music store and at random, I picked up a Spineshank album. Knowing nothing about them I decided to buy it anyway. I never regretted that decision. I love how he made it a point to make every song unique from one another. When he said "I listen to the first 2 tracks and I"ve listened to the whole thing" makes so much sense to me. I used to be a big Stained fan and the last few albums they made were just terrible. Every song on the album sounded the same, it was like listening to the same song on loop. Not having control over your own content is one thing that kills bands. This is what makes Silent Civilian stand out.

@@DiZzAzZtErPrOdUcTiOnS EXACTLY. This made me smile. As a kid, I was always spiking my hair & subconsciously repping Nu Metal (& I didn't even know what Nu Metal was back then; I was way too young. I thought it was just "modern rock" back then.) During my high school years (late 2000s/early 2010s), I admittedly boarded the whole metalcore scene & had my "emo phase." Now as an adult, I've fully evolved back into nu metal-& I've grown enough to the fucking point where I can say; this is my fucking culture. Always has been. Won't see me ever becoming or "graduating" into a "metal guy." No thanks. That just isn't me. Went through that entire phase already & came back to my roots; full circle. Y'all can keep your skinny/fitted shit; I like mine baggy. Always keep it Nu, man. No other style in this life has spoken to me like Nu Metal has, & still continues to do!

These guys are NOT the same without Tim Mankowski and Chris Mora. They have lost the sound that made the original album great. They might as well go by a different name. I don't care what Jonny says. The new album ISN'T better. But at least it's not bad either.
@ElectroFret21

@fallenangel900 Jonny is the only original member left and he's not much of a song writer or guitarist. The two guys that did 90% of the song writing are now gone and have been replaced by a couple of guys that sound average by comparison. You have to admit, Tim was a great guitarist and Chris was an insane drummer. And now, the only thing that identifies this as a Silent Civilian album is Jonny's voice. He's ruining SC just like he's currently ruining Spineshank.

He's bullshitting when he says he was pissed at Roadrunner for making them more melodic. It was mainly Santos that wanted to make melodic stuff, hence why after Spineshank he formed Temper which was even more melodic. But then a few years later metalcore starte blowing up so he forms Silent Civilian to get in on that trend. I like the guy but I hate bullshitters.

revivedfears Musically they were better than most of the bands that broke out between 2002-2008. Sure the band didn't achieve the same acclaim as Lamb of God, Shadows Fall or Chimaira. However, the band was one of the better second tier metalcore bands during that era.
